    Abstract: A life raft storage and inflation assembly, or system (12) of a type having a deflated life raft (22) stored in a separable canister (14) includes a hose assembly (34, 34') which can be broken down for coupling a selectively activated nozzle of a compressed-gas cylinder (24, 24') to an inlet cock (32, 32') of the deflated life raft. The hose assembly is comprised of a thermo-plastic hose (36); two brass sockets (38) which thread onto an outer surface of the hose; and two coupling fittings, a male life raft coupling fitting and a female cylinder coupling fitting. Each of these coupling fittings has a threaded nipple (52) on one end. These nipples are screwed through ends (48) of the sockets into the interior of the hose. Couplings at the other ends of these coupling fittings are designed differently. A female, or cylinder, coupling (60) of the female coupling fitting has female threads (82) that mate with a male nipple on the gas cylinder.

    Abstract: An improved battery refill system for filling and maintaining a number of interconnected battery cells at a predetermined level with liquid provided by an external liquid supply. Tubing is provided for connecting the battery cells in a chain or serial relationship. The tubing is fabricated from a plymeric material which, over an operating temperature range of between about -20.degree. F. and 200.degree. F., is substantially free of plasticizer bleed. The tubing is also sufficiently conformable and resilient over its service temperature range so as to remain in leak-tight engagement on both the barbed fittings and the compression fittings found in conventional battery watering systems.

A proportion by weight of the modified polyolefin to the polyamide resin is selected within a range between 40/60 and 10/90. The hose may have a sealing layer formed on the inner surface of the inner tube. The sealing layer consists of a chlorinated elastomer containing a dispersion of an acid receptive agent. Alternately, the sealing layer may be provided on the outer surface of a hose connector nipple.

The catheter shaft defines a first section which comprises a first plastic material and a second section abutting the first section which comprises a second plastic material having different physical properties from the first plastic material. The tubular reinforcement member comprises integral fibers that extend between, and are embedded in, the plastic of the first and second sections of the catheter shaft. Thus, the two different sections of the catheter shaft can have different physical properties while being reliably and permanently secured together not only by any bond present between the plastic portions but also because of the integral fibers extending between the two portions. Such a catheter may be made by threading preformed plastic catheter sections about the fibrous tubular reinforcement member and fusing.

    Abstract: A kink-resistant, small bend radius hose has a thin layer polyfluorocarbon liner tube with a thickness in the range of from about 0.005 inches to about 0.025 inches. The exterior of the liner tube is etched to allow silicone to be bonded thereto. A thin layer of silicone is bonded to the etched exterior of the liner tube. This layer of silicone serves as a bonding layer for a reinforcing layer of synthetic fabric, a helix strand and a cover layer. The reinforcing layer serves to strengthen the thin liner tube, the helix strand serves to support the hose against kinking and the cover layer adds additional strength and contains the helix strand with respect to the reinforcing fabric. Thus, a composite, integral, kink-resistant, small bend radius hose is achieved.

An inner wall comprising nylon, rayon or other similar material forms an inner wall of the hosing to resist corrosive attack by the heat transfer fluid. A locator wire is embedded within the hosing for transmission of a locating signal so that the position of the hosing within the slab may be accurately determined. The wire may also serve as an electrical resistance heating element should the heat transfer fluid become frozen, or should it be desired that the heat exchange system be operated without an external boiler or other heat source.

The balanced fabric is formed as woven sheets from filament yarns resistant to high temperatures. The yarns of the balanced fabric plies are orientated at the predetermined angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the composite hose such that the composite hose has a predetermined longitudinal flexibility to compensate for stress effects resulting from high temperatures, high pressures and/or vibrations.

    Abstract: Composite articles comprising a matrix material and reinforcing fibres coated individually or in tows with a support layer and methods of making the same are disclosed. The support layer is capable of supporting the fibres and preventing kinking thereof when the article is deformed while the matrix material is relatively soft. Polymeric matrix and support layer materials, either thermoplastic or thermosetting, are disclosed. When the support layer comprises a thermoplastic material, it should be selected to have a softening temperature which is higher than any temperature to which the article is heated for deformation. If matrix material and support layer are thermoplastic, the materials should be selected so that the softening point of the support layer is at least 10.degree. C. higher than that of the matrix, especially at least 30.degree. C. higher. According to the disclosure, the fibres are arranged so as to deform in a trellis deformation when the article is deformed.
