  • Patent number: 5832977
Abstract: A dovetail joint jig for guiding a power tool for creating a dovetail slot in a first workpiece and a dovetail pin in a second workpiece includes a substantially flat main body portion having a slot portion on one side and a pin portion on an opposite side. The slot portion includes a pair of oppositely-disposed side projections which define a clearance space therebetween. A tapered router bit is guided along the inner edge of the side projections in order to create a dovetail slot in the first workpiece. The pin portion includes a slot-shaped portion whose planar shape coincides with the shape of the slot to be created in the first workpiece and accordingly in the preferred embodiment coincides with the shape of the tapered router bit. A generally cylindrical router bit is guided around the edge of the pin portion in order to remove material from the second workpiece and leave a dovetail pin which matches the dovetail slot in the first workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5711356
Abstract: A template for use with a jig having a workpiece positioning member. The template supports and guides a cutting tool used to cut joint members in two workpieces and comprises a support surface and at least one set of guides formed on the support surface for guiding the cutting tool. The support surface is movable with respect to the workpiece positioning member a predetermined distance between a first position to cut joint members in one workpiece and a second position to cut complementary joint members in another workpiece. This arrangement permits accurate routing of rounded or square finger joints or other types of uniform, spaced joints as determined by the template being used. Moving the template with respect to fixed workpiece positioning members means that no adjustment of the positioning members or workpieces is necessary between cutting of complementary joint members on separate workpieces which tends to result in more accurate cutting of the joints.

  • Patent number: 5692861
Abstract: A template for use in preparing additional templates to be used in the fabrication of dovetail joints comprises a single planar member having a pair of sides in which the member defines a first and second plurality of elongated openings of a particular shape. The first plurality of elongated openings have enlarged circular ends through which started holes are drilled into an underlying blank. A router is then inserted into the started hole and guided by the sides of the first elongated openings defines a pattern in the underlying form. Similarly, the second plurality of elongated openings provide a guide to a router for forming a pattern on the other side of the form. The form then becomes a template for use in the fabrication of both the dovetails and pins of a dovetail joint.

The pin is cut by means of a router with a straight bit, and the procedure is repeated for all points on the arched edge at which a pin is desired.Modified dovetail and pin templates for use with the method for making curved dovetail joints are also disclosed.

Abstract: This invention is a pattern cutting assembly including a pattern guide member used in cooperation with a pattern and workpiece holding frame which, in turn, has a workpiece member mounted thereon and used in conjunction with a rotating blade, such as a router blade or a scroll saw blade, to cut a pre-determined accurate pattern within the workpiece member. The pattern cutting guide member includes a main circular support plate with a central opening in which a guide hub member is mounted and a clip connector assembly. The clip connector assembly includes a plurality of spaced clip members for anchoring and positioning in an upper support plate of a router table assembly. The pattern guide member can have the main circular support plate and the central guide hub member provided with a connected slot portion from an outer periphery of the main circular support plate which allows for a continuous blade, such as a jigsaw blade or a scroll saw blade, to be positioned centrally of the guide hub member.

Abstract: According to the present invention, a method is provided for making joints having angles other than right angles. Also, according to the invention, thickness of wood to be cut and/or size of the router bits used with a particular setup of template and fence can be changed simply by use of shims, without need for readjusting the fence or screws connecting the templates to their corresponding fences. This adjustability now includes, as a novel feature, the ability to cut dovetail joints using pin boards in stock thicker than the length of a dovetail bit without having to use a fence in which a rabbeted shim is substituted for a straight shim. Additionally, a method of cutting box joints using a combination of a dovetail template and a pin router bit has been found.

  • Patent number: 5110239
Abstract: A vacuum clamping system for trimming a flat or gently curved part from a sheet of material includes a template and a plurality of hold-down members, or pods, that sandwich the template between the pods and the workpiece. The template has a plurality of circular openings through its thickness. Each pod has an expandable bellows with an open suction end that extends downwardly through one of such openings, and comes into contact with and is closed by the workpiece. Subsequent evacuation of the bellows causes it to contract, thus pulling the workpiece tightly against one side of the template, and further pulling a clamping portion of the pod tightly down against the template's other side. This fixes the template in position between the pod and workpiece. Preferably, a number of pods are used in combinatiton with any given template to improve the clamping action.
