Abstract: An aqueous coating solution for zinc containing metals such as galvanized iron and steel. The coating solution is resistent to the formation of zinc induced sludge and can be operated with little or no overflow. The aqueous treatment solution contains from 0.1 to 10 grams per liter of a fluorometallic acid, from 0.015 to 6 grams per liter of a salt of a transition metal, from 1 to 30 grams per liter zinc; and optionally from 0.1 to 3 grams per liter a polymer of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or an ester thereof with a C1 to C8 alkanol.

Abstract: There are provided improved aqueous chemical cleaning compositions for removing organic and inorganic combustion residues from steel products, said compositions meeting the hydrogen embrittlement potential test criteria set forth in ANSI/ASTM F 519-77. These compositions are of particular utility in cleaning gas turbines in the motoring and running modes. The compositions comprise ethoxylated amines, ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid and demineralized water having a conductivity of or below 0.9 microhms. The composition has important application for the aviation and outer-space industries.
Abstract: Corrosion resistance of anodized aluminum surfaces is improved by conditioning the surface with a low molecular weight (2-7 carbon atoms) alcohol, and sealing the surface with long chain (10-24 carbon atom) carboxylic acid at low temperatures below about 35-50 degrees centigrade, the alcohol being a solvent for the acid.
Abstract: Effective, titanium-free agents for activating metal surfaces prior to phosphating these surfaces with phosphating baths containing zinc ions can be made by reacting alkali metal phosphates with 1,1-diphosphonic acids and their alkali metal slats and/or poly(aldehydocarboxylic acids) and their alkali metal salts.

Abstract: By using an aqueous solution containing a phosphoric acids or phosphate salts together with carboxylic acids containing at least two carboxyl groups per molecule along with conventional mass finishing, a wide variety of metal parts may be simultaneously deburred, cleaned, and provided with a surface with good resistance to corrosion in humid air. The solution used preferably also contains non-ionic surfactant, corrosion inhibitor, and, for use in hard water areas, a water hardness stabilizer.
