  • Patent number: 9821600
Abstract: A wheel includes an inner wheel half defining a plurality of inner bolt apertures and having a mating surface. The wheel also includes an outer wheel half defining a plurality of outer bolt apertures and having an inner surface. The plurality of outer bolt apertures are configured to be aligned with the plurality of inner bolt apertures such that each of a plurality of bolts may be received by one of the plurality of outer bolt apertures and one of the plurality of inner bolt apertures, forming a seal between the mating surface and the inner surface in response to each of the plurality of bolts being tightened. In response to a predetermined number of bolts becoming loose, a first portion of the mating surface may separate from a second portion of the inner surface, breaking the seal.

  • Patent number: 4440209
Abstract: A split tire arrangement (10) for use with a closed torus tire (14), includes a first and second rim halves (11,12) each respectively having a first tapered diameter (23) and a second smaller tapered diameter (24) located on an inner side (21) of the split halves adjacent the first tapered diameter. A split band (13) is located on the second tapered diameter (24) and has a radially outwardly extending center portion (38) to locate the closed torus tire (14) relative to the split band (13) with the edges (34,36) of the split band terminating under the roll hoops (16,17) of the closed torus tire (14). This provides an arrangement for mounting the closed torus tire (14) to the split rim arrangement (10) without requiring the high forces of rubber sliding on metal.

  • Patent number: 4181169
Abstract: A rim for a pneumatic tire carcass has a pair of rim portions which are securable together to form such rim. One rim portion is integral with a wheel hub and includes a plurality of pockets or guide openings formed therein. The other rim portion includes guide members which correspond to these pockets and which are positionable therein to position the rim portions relative to each other. Apparatus for separating the rim portions with the tire carcass mounted on them is disclosed, as is apparatus for pulling the tire carcass off a rim portion after the other rim portion has been separated therefrom. In another embodiment, a pair of rim portions are assembled by positioning posts fixed on one rim portion into angled slots defined by the other rim portion, and rotating one rim portion relative to the other, the posts being drawn into the slots during such rotation to draw the rim portions together.

  • Patent number: 4163466
Abstract: A safety support for mounting on a split rim inside a tire chamber to resiliently support the tread portion of the tire in the deflated condition and maintain the bead portions of the tire in separated positions. The support is in the form of an annular ring of resilient material having a base with a relatively wide radially inner surface for seating on the rim and separating the bead portions. A flange extends radially inward from the radially inner surface of the base for gripping by the rim sections to seal the space within the tire and retain the ring on the rim. The radially outer portion of the support has a diameter less than the diameter of the tread portion of the tire in the deflated condition and greater than the diameter of the base portion.

  • Patent number: 4123112
Abstract: A split wheel assembly for reception of pneumatic tires is provided with a safety feature to ensure that the two halves of the wheel cannot be dismantled when the tire thereon is pressurized. The assembly flanges of the two wheel portions have series of assembling apertures which register in pairs. The aperture on one of the flanges is circumferentially extending, and has a narrow end and a broad end. The narrow end of the aperture extends to an axially extending depression on the surface presented towards the flange of the other rim section. A bolt passes through the apertures, for assembling purposes, the bolt having a washer which fits into the depression, and having a securing nut which is sized so as to pass through the broad end of the aperture but not through the narrow end.

  • Patent number: 4043374
Abstract: A wheel rim assembly comprises a pair of annular rim sections each having a rim flange secured on an outboard end thereof for retaining an air-inflated tire thereon. A pair of back-to-back mounting flanges extend radially inwardly from inboard ends of the rim sections and are bolted together. One of the mounting flanges preferably extends radially inwardly beyond the other mounting flange and is adapted to be bolted to an axle hub of a vehicle. At least two latch means are mounted on peripheral portions of the rim sections to straddle the same for releasably attaching them together. Carrying forth the method of this invention, the tire is first deflated whereby a tool may be inserted through an opening formed through one of the rim sections to release the latch means to provide for separation of the rim sections upon release of the bolts.
