  • Patent number: 5167756
Abstract: The apparatus joins two glass panels (4, 5) by injecting a strand of an initially pasty and subsequently solidifying compound along the edge of the pane into the intermediate space between the two initially unjoined glass panels. It has a horizontal conveyor, which has supporting or holding elements (6), which hold the glass panels (4, 5) parallel to each other and spaced apart, it being possible for the supporting or holding elements (6) acting on one of the glass panels (5) to be removed individually in sequence or in groups from said glass panel by an actuating device (7), thereby allowing a nozzle to be moved uninterruptedly between the two glass panels (4, 5) around the edge of the panel by an automatically operating handling apparatus (30), and wherein the nozzle can be swiveled about an axis running at a right angle to said panels.

  • Patent number: 5136974
Abstract: For filling the edge groove (26) of an insulating glass pane (1) of an arbitrarily designed outer contour with sealing compound, stored geometrical data of the outer contour of the insulating glass pane (1) are utilized for controlling the relative motion between the insulating glass pane (1) and the filling nozzle (4). The relative velocity of the relative motion between the insulating glass pane (1) and the filling nozzle (4) is varied in such a way that the desired extent of filling of the edge groove (26) remains constant even in case of a change in the depth of the edge groove and/or in case of fluctuating feeding rate of a sealing compound. Furthermore, the relative speed between the filling nozzle (4) and the insulating glass pane (1) is selected to be higher in the zone of linear or less strongly curved sections (6) of the edge groove (26) than in the zone of more strongly curved sections (5).

  • Patent number: 5095375
Abstract: The present invention comprises hologram combiners that incorporate one of several compositions of material to seal their perimeters and prevent the hologram from being attacked by water. The design of the combiner edge seals are fabricated using a perimeter edge buildup technique. The invention is implemented by the use of a band of polymer film, or a metal film such as aluminum foil, for example, that is adhered to the edge of periphery of the combiner. Adhesion is achieved by the use of a adhesive material that has been filled with a water absorbing material comprising molecular sieves such as crystalline aluminosilicate, zeolites, or calcium oxide. Calculations and accelerated static testing have indicated that the present invention provides for a hologram combiner that meets the most stringent environmental requirements, and is suitable for substantially all applications in which it may be employed.

  • Patent number: 4909874
Abstract: A method of producing multi-pane glass units having a non-air gas in the interpane space. The method includes the steps of assembling several glass units, each of which has a pair of spaced glass panes and a peripheral spacer. A separator device is interposed between one of the panes and the peripheral spacer of each of the units. When the units have been so assembled, a vacuum is drawn on the units in an evacuable chamber to remove substantially all of the air from the interpane spaces. The chamber is then refilled with a suitable gas, such as argon, to refill the interpane space of each of the units. The separator is then removed from the glass units, to close the opening between the pane and the peripheral spacer of each unit, thereby completely sealing the interpane space of each unit from the vacuum chamber environment. The units can then be removed from the vacuum chamber and further processed.

  • Patent number: 4728379
Abstract: The invention relates to the manufacture of laminated glass, comprising glass sheets and plastic sheets. In the manufacture, glass and plastic sheets are each cut to a final dimension desired for use in laminated glass, assembled in a preliminary way, and, then, by the action of temperature and pressure formed to the laminate. The cutting of the plastic sheets, is carried out more particularly a plastic sheet of polyvinyl butyral as an interlayer between outer sheets of silicate glass is carried out by a high pressure water jet.

  • Patent number: 4726875
Abstract: A spacer (55) on a device for connecting two glass plates (31, 32) to form an edge-bonded insulating-glass pane by injecting a strand (67) of an initially pasty and subsequently solidifying material, adhering to the two glass plates (31, 32), over the entire periphery along the edge of the pane into the gap between the two glass plates held at a distance from one another is described. The spacer (55) has two rollers (70, 71) which are arranged next to one another with axes of rotation parallel to one another and to the pane running plane (10) and at right angles to the determined direction (III) of the relative movement between the nozzle (36) and the glass plates (31, 32) and of which one (70) is intended to rest against the inner surface of one glass plate (32) and the other (71) is intended to rest against the inner surface of the other glass plate (31).

  • Patent number: 4708762
Abstract: This apparatus includes a horizontal conveyor (3, 4) that has separate supporting elements (9; 11, 12) to support the two panes of glass (31, 32), some of which define a plane of movement of the panes (10), whereas the others define a plane that is parallel to this, and which can be moved out of engagement with the pane of glass (31) that is arranged at a distance from the plane of movement of the panes (10), this being done either synchronously or in groups. In order to inject a paste-like material between the two panes of glass (31, 32) there is at least one nozzle (36) which can be moved parallel to the plane of movement of the panes (10) transversely to the direction of movement (x) of the horizontal conveyor (3, 4). A separator that precedes the nozzle orifices of the nozzle (36) at a constant distance is provided, this penetrating into the space between the two panes of glass (31, 32).

  • Patent number: 4683153
Abstract: This invention is concerned with a method for preparing transparent laminated polarizing glass articles consisting of a support of an inorganic or organic glass, a coating exhibiting polarizing properties disposed on one of the surfaces of the support, and an optically transparent layer adhered to the coating which protects the coating from humidity. The vital feature of the method comprises a first treatment by a gamma-aminopropyltrialkoxysilane and a second treatment by an epoxyalkyltrialkoxysilane which is designed to improve the adherence of the optically transparent layer to the polarizing coating. The invention is especially useful in the fabrication of eyeglass lenses.

  • Patent number: 4683154
Abstract: A laser sealed evacuated window panel is comprised of two glass panes held spaced apart in relation to each other by a plurality of spherical glass beads and glass welded around the edges to provide an evacuated space between the glass panes that is completely glass sealed from the exterior. The glass welded edge seal is obtained by welding the edges of the glass panes together with a laser beam while the glass panes and bead spacers are positioned in a vacuum furnace and heated to the annealing point of the glass to avoid stress fracture in the area of the glass weld. The laser welding in the furnace can be directed around the perimeter of the glass panel by a combination of rotating the glass panel and linearly translating or aiming the laser with a relay mirror.

  • Patent number: 4669241
Abstract: A multi-panel thermal insulated glass unit is supported within an outer frame of U-shaped cross-section by a molded-in-place filler of silicone rubber. The latter forms a resiliently yieldable cushion which supports the glass unit in spaced relation from the frame and which enables limited floating of the glass unit within the frame to isolate the glass unit from shock and vibration imparted to the frame. As a result, the insulated glass unit may be used reliably in a heavy duty off-the-road construction vehicle without any appreciable risk of shock and vibration causing glass breakage or rupture of the airtight seal between the glass panels.

Abstract: A spacer frame assembly for an insulating glass panel is disclosed which is constructed by arranging a plurality of spacer frame segments end to end in substantial alignment, with adjacent frame ends being connected together, and supplying sealant to the aligned spacer frame segments substantially continuously along opposite sides. The adjacent frame segments are then pivoted about axes extending transversely to the opposite sides to form a generally planar polygonal frame configuration and the free ends of the frame are joined.A connector for adjacent ends of the spacer frame segments is disclosed which includes first and second body portions secured to first and second frame segments, respectively, and hinge structure connecting the body portions for enabling movement of one frame segment relative to the other. The connector body portions are secured relative to each other by connecting structure with the first frame segment in a predetermined angular position with respect to the second frame segment.
