Patent number: 5868882Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for mechanically bonding a polymer to a convex surface of a substrate to provide intimate contact therebetween for improved energy transport between a transducer on one side of the substrate and a chemical bath on the other. The polymer seals the surface of the substrate from the chemical bath and may have a low adhesion to the substrate. A thin film of the polymer is brought under a tensile stress to provide intimate physical contact with most of the area of the convex surface. In one embodiment, the tensile stress is achieved by providing polymer as a liquid on the convex surface and then cooling to take advantage of differential thermal contraction between the polymer and the substrate to achieve the tensile stress in the polymer.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1996Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Frederick William Kern, Jr., Donald Joseph Martin

Patent number: 4923108Abstract: The strengthening and stiffening of long, curved or tapered tubes is achieved by using internal strengtheners. The strengthening element conforms to the internal shape of the tube as it is inserted into the tube. The parts of the strengthening element which are then in contact with the inside of the tube have pre-formed welding material attached to them; a solid connection between the strengthener and the tube is achieved by selective heating, welding or by blowing adhesive material through the tube.If a tube has the non-welded strengthener in place, the forming or bending of the tube may proceed, since the strengthener takes the form of the tube at any stage of forming. The process is especially suitable for tubes with different cross-sections along their length.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1988Date of Patent: May 8, 1990Inventor: Steve Cordell

Patent number: 4867822Abstract: A method of forming a bushing in a graphite/epoxy structure in order to repair holes that are either too large or out-of-round. A mandrel having a diameter that is smaller than the desired hole diameter is wrapped with a strip of epoxy-impregnated graphite mat until the mandrel and mat tightly fit into the hole in the graphite/epoxy structure. The mandrel is then heated causing the mandrel to both expand and cure the epoxy resin in the mat. Expansion of the mandrel forces the mat against the edge of the hole to promote bonding between the mat and the graphite/epoxy structure. After the mat has cured, the mandrel is cooled thereby causing it to contract away from the mat so that it can be easily removed. Finally, the mat is trimmed to the thickness of the graphite/epoxy structure and a hole having the desired diameter is then machined in the mat.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1987Date of Patent: September 19, 1989Assignee: The Boeing CorporationInventor: Engbert T. The first and second layers are brought into thermal and mechanical engagement with each other before the first contacts the core, and the relative thermal capacities of the parts and the temperatures of the layers as they are brought into engagement are such that as the second layer cools and increases in strength and the first layer is heated by thermal transfer from the second layer and decreases in strength, a region of least overall yield strength is formed at a position where the temperature of at least one of the parts (being made of a crystallizable polymeric material) is at a temperature between its glass transition temperature and its crystalline melting point.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1982Date of Patent: May 29, 1984Assignee: BICC Public Limited CompanyInventor: Stefan Verne

Patent number: 4404055Abstract: An elastomeric bore seal, and a method of making and installing it. The seal is a fluid-impervious, thin-walled (0.025 inch), open-ended, cylinder-like member which is made of an expansible material that can withstand a wide range of temperatures (-65.degree. F. to +400.degree. F.) and that is to be bonded and thereby installed. The use of the seal is as a bore seal in an electrical machine not only provides an economical, reliable, leak-proof way of excluding stator cooling fluid from the rotor cavity, but also permits a significant reduction (26%) in the weight of the electrical machine and a correspondingly substantial reduction in the size of the machine itself.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1981Date of Patent: September 13, 1983Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air ForceInventors: Fred B. Patent number: 4391661Abstract: In providing an electrically insulative covering for a cable splice, a sleeve is assembled with an outer rigid shell and is maintained in fluid-sealed relation therewith. A supply of positively pressurized air is placed with the assembled sleeve and outer member, in fluid-sealed relation with the sleeve interior. The sleeve is expanded into contiguous relation with the outer member by the pressurized air. The expanded assembly is placed over the splice and the fluid-sealed relation of sleeve and outer member is interrupted, causing the sleeve to collapse upon the splice and cables, whereupon the outer member is removed and discarded.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1981Date of Patent: July 5, 1983Assignee: Thomas & Betts CorporationInventor: Hyman Izraeli
