Patent number: 7938921Abstract: A nonwoven composite that exhibits latent elastic properties is provided. The composite is formed from an elastic strand layer laminated to a nonwoven web facing. Latent elasticity may be imparted to the elastic strand layer through the combination of a thermoplastic elastomer and a polyolefin capable of forming semi-crystalline domains among the elastomeric chains. More specifically, the elastic strand layer may be stretched in one or more directions to orient the elastomer chains. Without intending to be limited by theory, the present inventors believe that the oriented state of the chains may be held in place by the relatively stiff semi-crystalline domains of the polyolefin. The stretched elastic strand layer may subsequently be relaxed and bonded to a nonwoven web facing to form the composite. The composite may be later activated (e.g., heated) to shrink the elastic strand layer and provide it with “latent” stretchability.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2006Date of Patent: May 10, 2011Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Wing-Chak Ng, Janis Wilson Hughes, Patricia H. Patent number: 6632309Abstract: A structural member for reinforcement of asphalt and concrete roadways and other products, and which comprises a gridwork of warp strands and weft strands which are disposed at right angles to each other and so as to define an open structure. In one embodiment, the gridwork is impregnated with a thermosettable B-stage resin so as to interlock the strands at their crossover points and maintain the gridwork in a semi-flexible state, and after being applied to the product to be reinforced, the resin is heated to convert the same into a fully cured composite to thereby rigidize the gridwork and reinforce the product. In cases where the product to be reinforced is heated, such as asphalt paving, the heat of the product provides the heat necessary to fully cure the resin in situ. In another embodiment, the resin is fully cured to rigidize the gridwork prior to its being applied to the structure to be reinforced. A method of producing the resin impregnated gridwork is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2000Date of Patent: October 14, 2003Assignee: Hexcel CS CorporationInventors: James E. Publication number: 20030173018Abstract: A method of securing an elastic strand to a flat substrate or sheet of material moving the elastic strand and the sheet in a converging manner from a first position in which the elastic strand is spaced from the sheet to a second position in which the elastic strand contacts one surface of the sheet. A filament of adhesive is dispensed onto the strand in a pattern configured with adhesive masses coupled by thinner filament sections. The adhesive masses are contacted with the strand when the strand is in the first position. The strand is bonded to the substrate with at least the adhesive masses.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 29, 2002Publication date: September 18, 2003Applicant: Nordson CorporationInventor: Michael Harris

Patent number: 6613260Abstract: A composite web including an elastically stretchable web and an inelastically stretchable web bonded together is stretched on a course defined between at least two nip roll pairs to obtain an elastically stretchable composite sheet. The composite web is brought into contact with a peripheral surface of at least one roll of each nip roll pair over an area of the peripheral surface defined by a quadrant of this roll's circular cross section.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2001Date of Patent: September 2, 2003Assignee: Uni-Charm CorporationInventors: Toshio Kobayashi, Hiroyuki Ohata, Masaki Yoshida

Patent number: 6607626Abstract: A process for continuous, tailored lamination of aligned composite materials in such a way that either pre-formed or pre-consolidated sheets are made available for subsequent infusion molding or stamping processes, the process comprising the steps of: material placement, consolidation/stabilization, cut and kit, fabrication, and final trim. A tailored blank machine is also described. The blank machine includes a series of material placement heads arranged in a linear or serial fashion along a single moving placement table, wherein each head lays down a single angle of the prescribed stacking sequence as the conveyer passes under the head at a constant speed wherein the angle is proportional to head traverse rate divided by conveyer speed.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2001Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignee: Hypercar Inc.Inventor: David Taggart

Publication number: 20030113489Abstract: A longitudinally reinforced liner for cured in place pipe rehabilitation of an existing pipeline having a plurality of high-strength low-elongation fiber bundles disposed between resin impregnable layers of the liner is provided. The bundles of reinforcing fibers are continuous lengths of reinforcing fibers laid out adjacent to each other and parallel onto about one-half of the middle region of the upper surface of the outer resin impregnable layer. An inner resin impregnable layer formed into a tube is laid up against the outer layer and the reinforcing fiber bundles and a plurality of bundles of reinforcing fibers are laid out along the exposed surface of the flattened inner layer. The edges of the outer layer are wrapped around the inner layer and bundles of reinforcing fibers and the secured to form an outer tubular layer with the reinforcing strands remaining in position between the two layers.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 13, 2001Publication date: June 19, 2003Inventor: E. Publication number: 20030070745Abstract: The invention describes a method and a device (101) for producing a longitudinal fibre web (100), in which fibres (2) are continuously applied, in the longitudinal direction, to a substrate web (6). In a pretreatment section, a relatively high tensile force (F) has to be exerted on the fibres, resulting in a relatively great strain (&egr;). Before the fibres (2) are applied to the substrate web (6), the stress in the fibres is reduced. The drive for the fibres in the pretreatment section is separate from the drive for the substrate web, the transport velocity of the fibres in the pretreatment section being controlled separately as a function of the transport velocity of the substrate web, in such a manner that the transport velocity of the fibres in the relaxed state is substantially equal to the transport velocity of the substrate web in the relaxed state.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 21, 2002Publication date: April 17, 2003Inventor: Martinus Cornelus Adrianus Van Den Aker

Publication number: 20020174945Abstract: Disclosed herein are an apparatus and method for joining sheets of woven material such as wire cloth in side-by-side relation to form a unitary sheet of material having a greater width. In accordance with one preferred embodiment, the apparatus includes a joining mechanism for joining the multiple sheets to form a unitary sheet, and optionally, either or both of a planarizing mechanism for reducing (or eliminating) differences in the thickness of the joint(s) from the bulk of the unitary sheet and a coating mechanism for coating at least areas of the unitary sheet near a joint. Following processing, the unitary sheet can be wound on a spindle to form a roll of woven material having greater than standard width.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2001Publication date: November 28, 2002Inventor: Robert Wood Fair
