Abstract: A metal pipe and method of forming the same with an integrally formed liner for use in corrosive and abrasive environments is disclosed. The liner is comprised of a relatively thick high density polyethylene which is thermally bonded to the metal pipe. An intermediate co-extruded polymer layer of ethylene acrylic acid and a polyethylene/ethylene acrylic acid blend is applied to the metal pipe facilitate thermal bonding. The intermediate layer is applied to the sheet metal in a pre-treatment process prior to roll forming ribs into the sheet metal. The polyethylene liner is applied after the ribs are formed To provide a smooth, hydraulically efficient surface which is resistent to the corrosive action of sulfuric acid and the like encountered in sanitary applications, as well as abrasion caused by the flow of water-born debris such as dirt and gravel as is encountered in culvert applications. Various means for further securing the polyethylene layer to the metal pipe surface are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5238515
Abstract: A method and apparatus for securing an enlarged sheet-like fabric to a side face of a panel which is provided with edge frame elements having retaining channels extending therealong. Each retaining channel has a film or bead of a solid adhesive therein. An edge portion of the fabric is positioned to extend over the mouth of the groove, and is then folded over an inserting member which inserts the fabric edge portion into the groove. Substantially simultaneously the adhesive film or bead is heated, as by an induction heater, and the inserting member presses the folded fabric edge portion into the melted adhesive. This contact is maintained and the adhesive is subjected to cooling to effect resolidification thereof and fixed securement of the inserted fabric portion to the channel part. The insertion preferably involves an inserting device having a plurality of blade-like rollers which insert the fabric into the channel as the edge frame of the panel relatively moves longitudinally along the set of rollers.

Abstract: An improved method and related apparatus are provided for making convertible top for automobiles and the like, wherein top deck and side quarter panels of fabric-based material cooperatively form rain gutters extending along the opposite sides of the top deck panel. The top deck and each side quarter panel for a convertible top are initially sewn together in overlying relation near one side margin whereupon the side margin is folded over with the side quarter panel folded back upon itself to define a pair of directly overlying side edge strips. This folded side margin is advanced through a folding fixture adapted to insert an elongated rod substantially into the base of the fold between the side edge strips of the side quarter panel. An adhesive material is applied between the side edge strips which are then pressed together to obtain a secure bond therebetween and to lock the rod in place.

Abstract: A weather strip for a vehicle has a channel-shaped base portion having a U-shaped cross section and provided with retaining lips for retaining a flange of a vehicle body, a seal portion integrally projecting from an outer surface of the base portion, and a core member made of synthetic resin and having a U-shaped cross section, which is embedded in the channel-shaped base portion. The method for producing such a weather strip as described above includes the steps of extruding a strip-shaped thermoplastic synthetic resin sheet having stress concentrating portions which are broken when bending stress is applied thereto, with rubber material to obtain an extruded body, heating the obtained extruded body for curing the rubber material thereof, applying bending stress to the cured extruded body for separating the core member in the stress concentrating portion and bending the separated core member with the rubber material to have a U-shaped cross section.

  • Patent number: 4608740
Abstract: A layer of padding is centered on a sheet of upholstery material. A rail is centered top down on the layer, and this feed assembly is moved continuously along a feed path by driven rotating rollers contacting the rail. The rail is forced by the roller toward a smooth slide face, which presses the sheet and layer against the rail top. The sheet slides along the smooth slide face. Smooth faced fences have inclined edges that progressively fold, pull taut, and then press the sheet toward the rail, compressing the layer. Guides with smooth faces and inclined edges fold the remaining sheet against the rail. The edges of the sheet are stapled or glued to the rail, producing a cap or padded rail with a taut, uniform upholstery covering. The staples or glue is inserted when the feed assembly has moved a desired distance along the feed path.

Abstract: Disposable fitted sheets and method for making them. The sheets are formed without necessitating prior cutting by folding edges of the material and attaching the folded-over edges along diagonal lines associated with each corner. Elastic bands cooperate with each pocket to maintain the fit on the corners of the mattress. The bands are fastened in a stretched condition to the folded-over edges while the sheet is in a flat state. The process of the invention is particularly adapted to continuously forming such sheets which may be formed from a variety of inexpensive materials. Sheets of the invention are particularly useful in hospitals and nursing homes where frequent bedding changes may be needed.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for making a laminate which is used to form a corrugated outer shield (60) of a sheath system (50) for a lightguide fiber cable (20). A strip (81) of a corrosion-resistant metallic material having a relatively high elongation, an oxide surface layer (65) and a relatively coarse outer surface is preheated to a temperature within a predetermined range. Afterwards, a composite adhesive strip is brought into engagement with the metallic strip and moved between a pair of rollers (91--91) which are maintained at a first temperature and which causes the strips to be subjected to a predetermined pressure. Then the two strips are moved between another pair of rollers (97--97) which are at a second temperature greater than the first and which subject the strips to the predetermined pressure. The resulting laminate (61) is corrugated by a device (104) and formed into the outer shield (60) about an inner shield (51) which is made of a highly conductive metallic material.

  • Patent number: 4486261
Abstract: An apparatus for the application of an adhesive film strip about the edge of a shaped part of sheet metal comprises a pair of application roller which rolls on the adhesive tape about the metal sheet edge, imparting to the strip a U-shaped cross section. The adhesive film strip is originally on a carrier tape and is on a storage reel from which it is drawn off by conveying rollers. After being separated from the carrier tape, the adhesive film strip is fed via free-wheeling pre-folding rollers to a pair of application rollers, and the carrier tape is removed by means of further conveying rollers. The pair of application rollers and the pre-folding rollers can be swivelled together about an axis extending parallel with the shafts of the application rollers, and are at the same time resiliently displaceable in the direction of this axis. The distance of the application roller shafts from the said swivelling axis is adjustable in order to achieve a leading or a trailing run.
