Abstract: An individually wrapped absorbent article such as a sanitary napkin which is simple, compact, sanitary, and easy to unwrap for use and to dispose of after use. The absorbent article avoids the need for a separate peel strip and pouch because it is provided with a wrapper that can be folded into a pouch. Substantially the entire backsheet of the absorbent article directly faces the wrapper and is secured to it to form an assembly. In the case of a winged or tabbed type absorbent article, this configuration obviates the need for a separate peel strip to cover the garment adhesive located on the wings or tabs. The assembly is wrapped by folding the lateral flaps thereof longitudinally over one another to enclose the article to prevent the garment adhesive from becoming contaminated. The package is then tri-folded laterally to form an e-shaped pouch. Wrapping and folding can be performed by an in-line process that uses simple equipment and that does not require reversal in the direction of article conveyance.

Abstract: Packing material and method in which a sheet of paper stock is folded in opposite directions along alternate parallel lines to form a series of ridges and valleys, cuts are made in the stock at intervals spaced along the ridges, and sections of the stock adjacent to the cuts are folded in a reverse direction along the fold lines at the ridges to form downwardly extending pleats beneath the ridges. The material can be crumpled for use as a dunnage material or wrapped about an item to be protected. In one disclosed embodiment, the material can be compressed for shipping and storage and expanded for use. In another, which is particularly suitable for use as a protective wrap, the folded stock is affixed to a backing sheet.

  • Patent number: 5492578
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an apparatus and an associated method for achieving alignment between an image on a film and a lenticular material that is to be bonded to the film to permit the image to be viewed in 3D. The apparatus imparts a controlled bending of the lenticular material over the film such that the slight differences in length between the lenticular material and the film, caused by the bending, adjusts for changes in the line spacing of the lenticular material and or in the spacing of the image segments. Other embodiments of the invention provide for a controlled stretching of the film along its length and from side-to-side to again compensate for variations in the line spacing of the lenticular material or spacing of the image segments.

Abstract: The present invention provides a female component for engaging a complementary hook component in a refastenable fastening device. The female component of the present invention is capable of engaging a hook component that has flexible, resilient individual hook elements. The female component comprises at least two, and preferably three zones or layers. Each zone has certain of the desired individual characteristics for entangling and holding the hooks of the mating hook component. These include a first zone for admitting and engaging at least some of the hooks of the complementary hook component (the "entanglement" zone), a second zone for providing space for the hooks to occupy after they have been admitted by the entanglement zone (referred to as the "spacing" zone), and a backing adjacent to the spacing zone for providing a foundation for the entanglement and spacing zones.

Abstract: Belts used in agricultural applications and particularly in round, hay balers have inherent problems created by their predominant process of manufacture. This process often involves cutting a large processed sheet of material into the narrow strips which form the core of the belt. The method disclosed herein produces a belt with a folded edge, a fabric wrapped edge, or an edge that is reinforced with a hard elastomer. These belts have strengthened longitudinal edges and an increased cross-sectional modulus at the edges which alleviates many problems associated with current hay-baler belts.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for the manufacture of a composite camouflage construction having an open mesh net substrate, and a continuous sheet overlying the substrate and bonded thereto along plural spaced lines of attachment, with lobes of the sheet cut to simulate the appearance of leaves and foliage. Apparatus and method includes a sewing station for stitching the sheet along plural spaced lines of attachment to the substrate to form open-ended pockets or channels between the sheet and substrate. The cutting station spaces the sheet from the substrate and a heated cutting wire reciprocates between adjacent lines of stitches to cut the sheet, open the channel, and use a series of loose lobes simultating the appearance of natural objects of a terrain, the fabric is then heated to cause the lobes to shrink and fall out of the plane of the fabric and are folded and creased to increase the openness of the fabric.

  • Patent number: 5122213
Abstract: A prestressed thermoformed panel, comprising an inner thermoplastic layer having fine grooves on the outer surfaces thereof, and outer fiber-reinforced thermosetting layers bonded to the outer surfaces of the inner layer. The grooves of the inner layer are of a size, pattern and orientation similar to that of the fibers of the thermosetting materials so that at least some of the fibers are positioned in the grooves to enhance the strength of the panel. In the method of forming the panel, the inner and outer layers are heated to approximately the fusion temperature of the thermoplastic material while applying inward pressure on the outer layers in the direction of the inner layer to bond them thereto. The pressure is less than the extruding pressure of the thermoplastic material. Thereafter, the thermosetting outer layers are cured, and the inward pressure on the outer layers is maintained until the temperature is at least 50.degree. F. below the fusion temperature of the thermoplastic material.

  • Patent number: 4938817
Abstract: Bonded seams for joining nonwoven, spunbonded polyolefin fabric to itself are prepared by overlapping of edge regions of the fabric with linen sides of the fabric in contact with one another and first applying heat and pressure along a seam line by means of ultrasonic energy and an embossed wheel, giving a lightly bonded strip. The strip is then folded against an adjacent surface, and heat and pressure are applied from the opposite side of the fabric and over the underlying folded-over strip. This procedure in effect merges the bond produced by the second application of heat and pressure with the first bond, giving a strong bond. Cleanroom and protective garments may be fabricated to include such seams, with the side of the seamed fabric that has a remaining cut edge at the seam being disposed on the inside of the garment. Such garments avoid release of microscopic particles such as occurs for stitched seams.

  • Patent number: 4919741
Abstract: A method for producing an embossed information plate, e.g., a license plate, wherein desired indicia are embossed in the front surface in relief form and retroreflective sheeting is adhered to the background portions of the front surface. A reflective sheeting having a low-tack, heat-activated adhesive on its backside is tacked to a plate blank. When the plate blank is embossed with desired indicia, the sheeting is simultaneously cut out according to the indicia. After the cut-out portions of the sheeting are removed, the embossed plate and trimmed sheeting which is tacked thereto are passed between a series of pairs of co-acting, resilient lamination rollers wherein the roller of each pair which contacts the sheeting is heated. The rollers conform to the contour of the indicia and heat the sheeting and adhesive, thereby causing the adhesive to effectively wet the surface of the plate and activating it as the sheeting is simultaneously laminated to the plate.

  • Patent number: 4894102
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and apparatus of refinishing a building panel such as a acoustic ceiling panel or tile. The method includes placing the building panel to be resurfaced on a support surface having a plurality of perforations. The building panel is placed so that its back surface is in contact with the perforated support surface. The perforations extend beyond the building panel's side edges. An adhesive is applied to one side of an air impervious sheet or film. The coated sheet or film is placed over the decorative surface of the building panel and over the exposed perforations in the support surface which are located beyond the building panel's side edges. Vacuum is drawn between the sheet or film and the perforated support surface via the perforations which is sufficient to enable ambient air pressure to force or collapse the sheet tightly against the decorative surface so that the sheet substantially assumes or conforms to the contour of the building panel's decorative surface.
