Abstract: Provided are multilayer laminates having one or more layers comprising twisted nematic liquid crystals and one or more layers of a polymeric sheet comprising a polymer with a modulus between 20,000 psi (138 MPa) and 100,000 psi (690 MPa). The twisted nematic liquid crystal layers reflect infrared radiation. Thus, the multilayer laminates are useful to reduce the transmission of infrared energy. For example, in some embodiments the multilayer laminates are useful as windows to reduce energy consumption necessary to cool the interior of a structure such as an automobile or building. Preferably, the multilayer laminates retain the beneficial properties of safety glass. The multilayer laminates may include additional layers such as infrared absorbing layers, half wave plates, and the like, to minimize the transmission of infrared energy. The multilayer laminates may also include further additional layers such as polymeric films, polymeric sheets, rigid sheets, and the like.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the removal of ion contaminations from liquid crystal layers in liquid crystal display devices. The ions are removed by means of so called ion pumping, which utilizes the anisotropic viscosity of liquid crystals. The ions are pumped up and down in the liquid crystal layer by means of an alternating electric filed. The alternating electric field simultaneously alters the alignment of directors in the liquid crystal. The viscosity in the liquid crystal is related to the director directions, and the ions are thereby moved in non-closed trajectories. The inventive ion pumping can be further improved using an asymmetric or biased alternating electric field.

Abstract: A system and method for bonding and unbonding of small objects using small adhesive particles. The system and method includes the use of a plurality of optical tweezers to manipulate objects to be bonded and adhesive particles suspended in a fluid. The objects to be bonded (or unbonded) and the adhesive particles are positioned by lower power optical tweezers and then an intense bonding optical tweezer is activated to cause the adhesive to join the objects together (or used to unbond objects).

Abstract: The present invention provides liquid crystal devices comprised of a composite of an internal polymer network localized on the substrate surfaces and short-pitch dual-frequency switchable cholesteric liquid crystal that operate in two different modes including in-plane switching (amplitude modulation) and out-of-plane switching (phase modulation). The invention further provides a method of making a liquid crystal device demonstrating uniform lying helical axis where the device comprises a composite of an internal spatially ordered polymer network localized by in-situ photo-polymerization at the surface of the substrate. The invention can be used for flat panel displays, as well as spatial light modulators for applications such as optical waveguides, optical beam scanners, computer-generated holograms, and adaptive optics.

Abstract: A thin image display device having a resin interposed between an image display unit and a protection member having a light-shielding member is manufactured. In the manufactured image display device, display defects caused by the deformation of the image display unit do not occur, and high-brightness and high-contrast display can be achieved. In addition, the resin in the area where the light-shielding member is formed can be sufficiently cured. The method for manufacturing an image display device includes the step of forming a cured resin layer by interposing a photo-curable resin composition between a base including the image display unit and a light-transmitting protection member including a light-shielding member and then photo-curing the photo-curable resin composition. In this method, a resin composition having a curing shrinkage ratio of 5% or less, yielding a cured product having a storage elastic modulus at 25° C. of 1.

  • Publication number: 20100043966
Abstract: A method for bonding glass components using an encapsulated photo-initiated optical adhesive, and the resulting glass assemblies produced by the same. A mixture containing a catalyst and a resin is provided where at least one of either the catalyst or the resin is encapsulated. The mixture is applied to a glass component. The encapsulated catalyst may then be exposed to ultraviolet light causing the capsules to release the portions contained therein and combine to form an adhesive. A second glass component is then placed on the adhesive so that the adhesive is interposed between the glass components and the adhesive is permitted to cure. Alternatively, the mixture may be exposed to UV light after the second glass component is placed. An exemplary method uses a frame with the first glass component to create a uniform thickness of adhesive and provide a low level of optical defects. Barrier coats and skirting tape may also be used.

Abstract: A pipe lining material comprising an inner lining material and an outer lining material is used to rehabilitate an aged existing pipe. The inner lining material and the outer lining material are made of a tubular resin-absorbent material that is impregnated with a photo-curing resin and a thermosetting resin. The resin-absorbent material of the inner lining material has a higher density than that of the outer lining material. The photo-curing resin of the inner and outer lining materials is cured by light when the pipe lining material is irradiated with light, and the heat generated when the photo-curing resin is cured cures the thermosetting resin of the inner and outer lining materials. Since the resin-absorbent material of the inner lining material has a high density, voids are less readily formed. Even if voids are generated in the resin-absorbent material of the outer lining material, the voids will be covered by the inner lining material having fewer voids.
