Patent number: 6823918Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a multi-layered structure which for a given external geometry a section of interest may be integrally reinforced by varying the relative proportions of the layers in that section. That is, the layers making up the structure may have varying relative proportions to the structure's overall thickness between two or more positions while the structure maintains a constant thickness between the positions. By varying the relative proportions of the structure's layers, the mechanical properties of the structure may be selectively altered from a first position to a second position without altering the structure's external profile. This is especially desirable in composite sandwich structures used in aerospace applications which often require additional reinforcement at structural interfaces.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2001Date of Patent: November 30, 2004Assignee: Lockheed Martin CorporationInventors: Duane D. Patent number: 5643398Abstract: An apparatus and method for sealing a loose tail of wound material against a log using an infeed and log reject station, a tail separator station and a tail ironing and log discharge station. The apparatus and method receives a log on a pair of rider rolls and directs one or more air jets against the log to cause the tail to extend away from the log and captures the tail on a vacuum table as controlled by an optical sensor monitoring the table. The log then progresses to a glue table where a stripe of glue is applied through an aperture in the table by a glue transfer bar rotating out from being submerged in a glue reservoir. The log is then received between three ironing rolls which compress the tail against the log and discharge the log from the ironing rolls by moving an ejector arm from a rest position between two of the ironing rolls towards the third ironing roll to an ejecting position intermediate all three ironing rolls.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1995Date of Patent: July 1, 1997Assignee: C. Patent number: 5458729Abstract: An apparatus for applying a label onto a small, cylindrical article, such as a dry cell battery, is disclosed. A rotatable label transport drum has a central, horizontal axis. A label is fed to the drum surface, retained thereto as the drum rotates, and moved with the rotating drum into an article wrapping position defined at the upper area of the drum. An article delivery system, such as a star transfer wheel, delivers the articles sequentially onto the drum surface. The delivery system is spaced outward from the drum surface to clear the trailing edge of the label which is outwardly positioned from the drum surface. An attractive force is imparted on the article in a direction so as to aid smooth delivery of the article onto the drum surface and the label moving therewith.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1994Date of Patent: October 17, 1995Inventors: John M. Galchefski, Ian Westbury

Patent number: 5403416Abstract: Method and apparatus for applying heat shrinkable segments of sheet material to articles having a convex sector, e.g., for applying labels to containers. Each segment is attached at its leading end to the area of maximum diameter of the convex sector, preferably flattening such area and adhesively attaching the leading end of the segment to the flattened area, then spinning the article and wrapping the segment about it and attaching the trailing end to the container or to the leading end, then causing the so wrapped article to pass through a heating and shrinking station, spinning it while so doing and applying jets of hot air to the segment above and below the area of maximum diameter to shrink the segment onto the convex sector. Apparatus suitable for carrying out this procedure is also described.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1992Date of Patent: April 4, 1995Assignee: B & H Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: Lyn E. Patent number: 5399216Abstract: An apparatus and method for applying thin film polymer labels to small cylindrical articles such as dry cell batteries without label mismatching is disclosed. A label transport drum is rotatably mounted on a frame. Cut labels are supplied to the surface of the label transport drum as the drum is rotated. An adhesive is applied onto the area adjacent the leading edge of the label while the label is moving with the drum, and a solvent is applied onto an area adjacent the trailing edge of the label. Cylindrical articles are conveyed in tangential spinning engagement with the label transport drum and into rotative engagement with the adhesive on the leading edge of the label so as to transfer the label onto the article as the label is moved into engagement with the rotating article. A pressure plate imparts pressure against selected sides and ends of the article during wrapping to prevent mismatching of the label as the label wraps around the article.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1993Date of Patent: March 21, 1995Assignee: CMS Gilbreth Packaging SystemsInventors: John M. Patent number: 5352319Abstract: Rolls of toilet paper are produced by winding a paper web around each of a plurality of air permeable cylindrical cores each having a fixed, outer diameter while applying a liquid to only a leading portion of each web so that wound webs each having a wet inner portion are formed. After drying the wound webs to integrally bind the inner portion, the core is separated from each of the wound webs.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1993Date of Patent: October 4, 1994Assignee: Ishizu Machinery Co., Ltd.Inventors: Noboru Ishizu, Teruo Takahashi, Tomoyuki Shinohara

Patent number: 5271783Abstract: Labeling machine for applying labels of heat softenable material to containers comprising a rotating cylindrical vacuum drum which picks up labels in succession at a label receiving station as it rotates, transports each label to a label applying station at which the leading end of each label is applied to a container; means to rotate each container to which the leading end of a label has been applied to wrap the label around the container and to lap the trailing end of the label over the leading end and while so doing to apply pressure to the lapped junction of the leading and trailing ends, and means in the form of a heat applicator located within the drum, extensible through an opening in the drum to bring a head or nozzle into close proximity to the trailing end of a label during most of the travel of such trailing end between the label receiving and label applying positions and to apply heat during such period to the trailing end to soften the trailing end so that it can be welded by pressure to the leadType: GrantFiled: August 22, 1991Date of Patent: December 21, 1993Assignee: B & H Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventor: Terry C. Patent number: 5028293Abstract: An apparatus for decorating the outer surface of a hollow article, such as a bottle, with a label, which includes a turret for transporting the article and a label from a loading to an unloading location while simultaneously rotating the article around its own axis which facilitates the label to be transferred to the outer surface of the bottle. The turret also includes nozzles which engage each article at the decorating station. Furthermore, air may be blown into the article through the nozzle to support the article in instances when said article is made of a plastic or other deformable material.
