  • Patent number: 11691408
Abstract: A method for designing a printing plate for mounting on a printing cylinder. An optimal lateral seam path is defined between opposite lateral edges of the plate by applying an energy minimization function. Top and bottom edges of the plate are defined based upon the optimal lateral seam path, preferably with a variable gap therebetween, and the bottom edge is unwrapped from the top edge to define a closed cutting path. The area inside the closed cutting path is wrapped with artwork or portions thereof, and an updated digital graphics file stored. The energy minimization function may include a penalty function, overall seam path length, and seam path amplitude, with weighting factors. For artwork including staggered lanes of step and repeat one-up images, the optimal lateral seam path may extend across each lane through one-up images, steps between adjacent one-up images, or a combination thereof.

Abstract: A printer has a printer unit including a recording head and automatic cutter, and an adhesive transfer unit disposed downstream from the automatic cutter. The adhesive transfer unit has a transfer mechanism that supplies adhesive tape and transfers adhesive to recording paper at a transfer position. When a paper detector disposed upstream from the transfer position detects recording paper, the control unit of the printer causes the pressure mechanism to alternately form the contact state pressing the recording paper to the adhesive tape, and the non-contact state in which the recording paper is separated from the adhesive tape. Adhesive is transferred to the recording paper passing the transfer position while this contact operation repeats intermittently.

Abstract: Winding cores for the paper industry are restored by removing the metal tips from the ends of the core, trimming the core to eliminate the crimped end portions of the core, providing complementary male and female joint ends to the core, grinding the outer surface of the core to a constant outer diameter less than the industry standard outer diameter to accommodate a finishing layer. The cores with the complementary joints are pressed end to end to form a core master prior to its being ground and then picking up the core masters one by one and bringing them into proximity of a web of liner board material having a length which corresponds to the length of the core master and a width which corresponds to the circumference of the core, contacting the glue bearing liner board web with the core and rotating the core to wrap the web of liner board about the core to provide a finished restored core. The core master is then cut into suitable length winding cores.

  • Patent number: 6372064
Abstract: An apparatus and method for sealing the tail of a rolled product against the rolled product using a roller and one or more sensors to position the tail for accurate adhesive application upon the tail and/or the log. After being positioned in a location upon a roller, the rolled product is rotated between the roller and a conveyor assembly until a jet blows the unsealed tail against the roller. By further rotating the roller, a sensor detects the location of the tail end, thereby establishing a reference (along with measured roller and conveyor assembly movements) for determining tail length in later operations. Next, the roller is reversed to pass the tail around the roller and preferably to a tail support adjacent to the roller. When the tail reaches a desired position along the tail support, an applicator sensor sends a signal to an adhesive assembly which applies adhesive to the tail and/or to the rolled product.

Abstract: A metal surface is protected against corrosion, by adhesively bonding a flexible, vapor impermeable metal-plastic laminate to the metal surface, the laminate comprising a metal foil and a plastic film having one surface bonded to one surface of the metal foil. The metal foil is remote from the metal surface with the plastic film being disposed therebetween, and acts as a vapor barrier preventing corrosive vapor, water vapor or oxygen from reaching the metal surface. Such a laminate can also be used for preventing corrosion of metal reinforcing bars in reinforced concrete structures.

  • Patent number: 5888339
Abstract: An apparatus for wrapping a joint of pipe with a web of reinforced concrete includes an improved applicator that wraps the joint of pipe with a web of concrete that is reinforced with a steel mesh and which is also layered with a web of poly film. The improved applicator has a motor drive and a gear box that interfaces the motor drive with one of the belt pulleys that drives the applicator belt. The primary applicator belt can be disengaged from the pipe, thereby transferring both pulleys to idler pulleys after pipe wrapping is initiated. This allows the large motor drives that actually rotate the pipe to control the speed at which the web of concrete is applied to the pipe. The motor drive for the applicator belt is initially engaged for a few seconds to overcome initial friction associated with start up of the applicator. A timer can be used to regulate the number of seconds that the applicator motor operates until it is disengaged using the clutch.
