Abstract: The protection of the straight edges of multilayer panels (10), such as spacecraft thermal protection panels or heat shields, is ensured by an adhesive protection edging (14) having two adhesive, lateral zones bonded to the faces of the panel and a non-adhesive zone (18) placed on the edge of the panel. Following the removal of a non-adhesive protection (30b), a first adhesive, lateral zone (20b) is brought onto a working plane (22), through a slot (32), and is progressively bonded to the lower face of a panel (10) moving on said plane. The second lateral, adhesive zone is then turned down and pressed onto the upper face of the panel, after which the non-adhesive protection (30a) of said zone is removed.

  • Patent number: 5462625
Abstract: Tabbed or indexed sheets typically for use in ring binders or other stationery applications are produced from a web of sheet material by means of forming an aperture in the sheet material and inserting through the aperture a length of reinforcing material. The length of reinforcing material is secured to the opposed faces of the sheet material and the individual sheet separated from the remainder of the web of sheet material by cutting to form a trailing edge and a leading edge for the sheet. In cutting the sheet material to form the leading edge of the sheet, a tab or indexed portion of the reinforcing material is obtained at the leading edge.

  • Patent number: 5421947
Abstract: Disclosed is a laminating machine for applying a protective laminate to the edge of any paper or paperboard product such as an index or paperboard card. The machine includes grippers for retaining opposed edges of a cut laminate and an elongate crimping mechanism for engaging the laminate between the grippers and for pressing the laminate against the nip of a pair of pressure rollers. The elongate crimping mechanism is withdrawn and an edge of the paper or paperboard product is fed to the elongate crimp created in the laminate. The paper and laminate are then fed between heated pressure rollers to effect lamination. The above steps can be repeated to apply a laminate to two or more edges of a paper or paperboard product. When two or more adjacent edges are to be laminated, a cutting mechanism cuts the laminate at angles to form miter joints at the corners.

  • Patent number: 5407522
Abstract: A method and apparatus for securing an enlarged sheet-like fabric to a side face of a panel which is provided with edge frame elements having retaining channels extending therealong. Each retaining channel has a film or bead of a solid adhesive therein. An edge portion of the fabric is positioned to extend over the mouth of the groove, and is then folded over an inserting member which inserts the fabric edge portion into the groove. Substantially simultaneously the adhesive film or bead is heated, as by an induction heater, and the inserting member presses the folded fabric edge portion into the melted adhesive. This contact is maintained and the adhesive is subjected to cooling to effect resolidification thereof and fixed securement of the inserted fabric portion to the channel part. The insertion preferably involves an inserting device having a plurality of blade-like rollers which insert the fabric into the channel as the edge frame of the panel relatively moves longitudinally along the set of rollers.

  • Patent number: 5395466
Abstract: A back pasting apparatus which uses a back pasting adhesive tape and is intended to make the apparatus compact and to improve back pasting quality. A guide rail (16) movable back and forth with respect to a frame (14) is provided. A paper table (15) arranged opposite to the guide rail (16) is biased by a spring or the like in the direction of the guide rail (16). The guide rail (16) and a clamp (22) are driven by a drive mechanism. First, a back pasting adhesive tape (30) is fed by a tape feeder into the guide groove (19) of the guide rail (16). As the clamp (22) lowers, the cover of papers (17) is pressed against the adhesive tape (30). The guide rail (16) is moved down along the grooves (20, 20) before being moved forward. As a result, only the paper table (15) is pressed down and moved back so that the adhesive tape (30) is pressed against the back and back cover of the papers (17).

  • Patent number: 5304275
Abstract: A reinforcing strip is applied to sheets by longitudinally advancing a leading sheet while the strip is adhered to it along a travel path to a downstream stop station and thereby drawing the strip from a supply and extending it longitudinally through an upstream stop station while simultaneously adhering the strip to the full length of the leading sheet. Then the leading sheet is arrested in the downstream stop station while a trailing sheet upstream of the arrested leading sheet is advanced downstream until a leading edge of the trailing sheet engages an upstream stop in the upstream station immediately upstream of a trailing edge of the leading sheet. The trailing sheet is then arrested with its leading edge engaging the upstream stop which it pushes downstream against the upstream edge of the leading sheet. Generally simultaneously the strip is adhered upstream of the upstream stop to the trailing sheet and the strip is severed at the upstream stop between the leading and trailing sheets.
