  • Patent number: 8726962
Abstract: An apparatus and method to manufacture shaped counter top edges for custom counter tops. Sheet laminate is heated, clamped to a post form mold with clamping screws, and then formed around the post form mold into formed laminate. The formed laminate is then bonded to a substrate using adhesive and a bonding fixture having a plurality of bonding presses. Each bonding press has a pair of mutually opposed bonding press molds, each bonding press mold having a bonding press mold groove sized to admit a formed laminate around an edge of the substrate. Clamps hold the bonding press molds together, thereby urging the formed laminate into intimate contact with the substrate until the adhesive cures. A counter top edge is cut from the resulting substrate/laminate assembly at an edge first cut angle and an edge second cut angle to provide a neat and aesthetically pleasing installation on a counter.

Abstract: Apparatus is provided in which a support table and clamp arrangement serve to hold a panel in position while a surfacing sheet already applied to the major face of such panel, is applied around radiused edges of the panel. The apparatus includes a turntable to support a panel in raised position relative to the support table when the turntable is being rotated to enable successive edges of the panel to be presented to the apparatus without removing a panel from the turntable. The turntable can be located on a carrier movable laterally towards and away from the clamping arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4704183
Abstract: A press for applying an overlay to the front and sides of an elongate workpiece. Elongate edge margins of a forming sheet are manipulated through actuation of arrays of sheet-manipulating and positioning piston-cylinders to cause the forming sheet to wrap around the workpiece and during such wrapping to press an overlay against the workpiece. Tray assemblies support a workpiece while the overlay is applied, and these are mounted from movement from within to outside the press, to facilitate reloading of the press.

  • Patent number: 4634483
Abstract: Sheet material to be laminated to a substructure is presented in a stretched out condition for enclosing between upper and lower laminating tools. For this purpose a sheet material transport mechanism such as a tentering frame is movable back and forth between the laminating station and a sheet receiving position. The sheet margins around outer and inner edges of the laminated work piece are then trimmed and bent over inwardly. These operations are performed while keeping the work piece on the same lower tool or mold during all operations. The lower tools are moved from laminating to trimming and vice versa on a turntable.

Abstract: Apparatus for applying a surfacing sheet such as a plastic sheet, veneer or the like to an optionally radiused edge of a panel, or to a column or the like, in which an applicator bar which is, optionally heated and is preferably flat, is urged against the surfacing sheet to press it onto the surface of the panel column or the like. Means are provided for ensuring that lateral movement of the applicator bar takes place relative to the panel or column to stretch and smooth the surfacing sheet onto the surface of the panel or column. The applicator bar is preferably carried on an arm arrangement held between two spaced rotatable end supports and the biasing is carried out by a number of spaced pneumatic or hydraulic piston and cylinder assemblies acting transverse to the arm arrangement. The biasing means is preferably carried on a frame member carried by the rotatable end supports.

  • Patent number: 4561923
Abstract: Tubing typically produced by an extruder is advanced to coiling apparatus and is cut to predetermined lengths. The automated apparatus includes a plurality of spindles arranged at spaced intervals about a turret, which is indexed to position each spindle to: receive, clamp and coil the last cut length of tubing; advance the coiled length of tubing to a taping station, where the spindle so advanced is rotated for application of tape at diametrically opposed locations, and advance the spindle to an ejection location, where the spindle ejects the taped coil of tubing. The taper advances a pressure-sensitive tape strip, strips a protective strip from the tape and applies the tape to the applicator surfaces of a jaw assembly which swing together causing the tape to envelope the coiled tubing and presses the ends of the pressure-sensitive tape strip together to complete the taping function. The jaws of the jaw assembly are then separated, and the jaw assembly is withdrawn from the coiled tubing.

  • Patent number: 4530729
Abstract: A folding apparatus and method for folding a flat sheet so that an exact interior height is provided between the two folded portions is disclosed. The flat sheet is folded about a shim having a folding edge which is rounded and which has a thickness corresponding to the desired interior height. The flat shim is positioned on the flat sheet with the edge of the shim located along the line where the fold in the sheet is to be made. Initially, the portion of the sheet away from the shim is folded approximately 90.degree. by tangential bending on the folding edge of the shim. Next, a die having a facing edge mating with the folding edge of the shim is pushed onto the folding edge of the shim. The portion of the sheet which was folded 90.degree. is thus folded onto the top of the shim to approximately 180.degree.. With this two step folding, an exact interior height adjacent the fold is provided.

  • Patent number: 4475966
Abstract: The technique of forming a jacket by welding a pair of T-shaped side rails to a U-shaped enclosure comprises the steps of (1) inserting the U-shaped enclosure over a spacer plate, (2) clamping the U-shaped enclosure to the spacer plate, (3) inserting the flange portions of the T-rails between the side edge portions of the U-shaped enclosure, and (4) ultrasonically welding the side rails to the U-shaped enclosure to complete the assembly. According to a further feature of the invention, the clamping plates are fitted with tapered inserts at both ends to oppose the tendency of the finished jacket to collapse in the middle. Pursuant to still another aspect of the invention, the portion of the spacer plate near the open end of the U-shaped enclosure is provided with energy concentrating tips to direct a portion of ultrasonic energy to this region to ensure a good weld between the side rails and the U-shaped enclosure near its open end.
