  • Patent number: 4946539
Abstract: This invention is generally accomplished by providing continuous self-adhesive strands of elastic to a substrate having retractable supports extending therefrom. The retractable supports in a convex pattern are contracted with the self-adhering elastic and the substrate bearing the elastic and supports is brought into contact with the web to which the elastic is to be transferred. The series of supports around which the elastic contacts are forced to retract as the self-adhering elastic is pressed against the web causing the elastic to transfer to the substrate thereby creating an elastic band on the substrate. In a preferred form the substrate is fed two strips of self-adhering elastic that are applied on each side of a series of a convex pattern of pins and then pressed together around opposing sides of the convex pattern of pins to seal the elastic to itself and sever the elastic, creating a contoured closed loop around the pins.

  • Patent number: 4943340
Abstract: In the manufacture of disposable clothing such as diapers, elastic waistbands are attached to respective longitudinal ends of diapers while stretched in transversely extended condition. The diapers are arranged in end-to-end relation as a continuous of diaper precursors which is fed past a transfer station. A continuous sheet of elastic is coated on one side with adhesive except adjacent longitudinal edges thereof and the leading end is repeatedly severed transversely into successive individual elastic members which are then spaced apart and progressively stretched into extended condition while being fed one-by-one to the transfer station where the coated side is applied by a transfer drum to the web thereby transferring the elastic members at predetermined spacings to the web. The elastic members are then severed into two pieces while also severing through the web in a single cutting action to define adjacent ends of diapers with respective pieces of elastic members attached in extended condition.

  • Patent number: 4925520
Abstract: An elastic ribbon is fed over a vacuum drum. Rotating cutter blades use the drum as an anvil to cut the ribbon into spaced apart segments. A sheet comprising a diaper web runs over a roll that is spaced from the drum. A segment transferring and stretching device is arranged between the drum and roll. One embodiment of the transferring device has grippers rotating together about the axes that are not coaxial but are at opposite acute angles relative to the roll and drum axes. The grippers engage an unstretched elastic segment on the drum when the grippers are close together but as they rotate they spread apart and stretch the segment which is then pressed onto the glue treated sheet. In another embodiment of the elastic segment stretching and transferring device, grippers are mounted to the periphery of a vacuum drum. At least one of the grippers is moved alternately toward and away from the other under the influence of a stationary cam as the drum rotates.

Abstract: Apparatus for making a plastic film bag having bag mouth lips projecting beyond a heat-seal band closing the bag mouth and providing a stiffening patch bonded to the interior or exterior of a bag mouth lip between the heat-seal band and the bag mouth end for reclosing the bag mouth after the heat-seal band has been opened. For reclosing the bag mouth, the apparatus applies stiffening patches to a web of sheet material for making bags at the time that the bags are formed and filled by clipping from a strip of patch-making material patch pieces having pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side. The apparatus transfers such patch pieces from a rotary shear onto the bag-making material by an orbiting transfer member having a suction pickup to pick up a patch piece and blowing means for subsequently detaching the patch piece from the transfer member and depositing it onto the web of bag-making material.

  • Patent number: 4726873

  • Patent number: 4726874
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus for applying a tensioned elastic ribbon or ribbons transversely of a moving web or material. It is particularly well adapted for applying elastic to the waist zones of disposable diapers moving continuously in an end-to-end assembly. The apparatus has a supporting frame with a shaft providing an axis of rotation for at least one rotatable radial arm. A polygonal head is mounted at the end of each arm. This has a number of peripheral edges with clamps or vacuum orifices for holding a tensioned strand or strands of elastic ribbon. A drive rotates the radial arms and a rotating mechanism moves the heads (360/n).degree. for each full rotation of the radial arms where n is equal to the number of peripheral faces on the head. An anvil acts against the head at the time of application of the tensioned elastic to the moving web. The web is passed between the head and the anvil along a path describing a chord or tangent of the circle of rotation of the radial arms.

Abstract: A method for making base assemblies for medicine dispensing compresses, includes using a web of substantially imperforate material, and a web of backing material having a base layer with an adhesive on one side. A plurality of individual dam patches are cut from the web of imperforate material, and applied to the adhesive side of the base layer. A cover layer is applied to the adhesive side of the base layer to sandwich the dam patches between the base layer and the cover layer. Individual base units are cut into the base layer, with one of dam patches positioned within each of the base units. Apertures are cut in the areas of the cover layer overlying the dam patches to access a portion of the foil surface of each of the dam patches. The offal portion of the base layer is removed from the cover layer, forming fabricated base assemblies for the compresses, which are conveniently carried together on the cover layer for final assembly.

  • Patent number: 4642150
Abstract: Uniform lengths of elastic tape are secured to a continuously advancing mrial web, for example, to make baby diapers. First an intermittently advancing tape is repeatedly gathered, for example, by laying tape sections into a depression of defined dimensions, to relieve the tape sections of any stretching. This assures tape sections of uniform length which are then stretched, cut and applied to the material web, for example, by an adhesive bonding. The apparatus used for performing these steps has several cooperating rollers of which the first has the depressions in its surface and is rotated intermittently while the second roller is rotated continuously. The spacings between neighboring tape sections bonded to the web preferably have a uniform length.

  • Patent number: 4642151
Abstract: The invention provides an efficient method and apparatus for applying linear segments of elastic to a base material transverse to the direction the base material is moving in a production line. This object is obtained by providing an apparatus with means for sequentially and repeatedly gripping an elastic strip, pulling that elastic strip across the base material, and then releasing the elastic strip. At about the same time the elastic strip is released, it is cut to size. Also at this same time, the elastic strip is brought into contact with the base material. Preferably, the elastic strip is brought into contact with the base material by virtue of rotation of the gripping, pulling and releasing means.

  • Patent number: 4610751
Abstract: The present invention provides a process and apparatus for the separation of strip sections from a first moving material web, for the subsequent application of these strip sections on discrete areas lying at a distance one behind the other of a likewise moving second material web, wherein the predetermined distance is achieved by moving the separated strip sections apart. In the case of a transfer of the strip section to the second material web, the strip sections and the second material web are kept at an equal constant speed during the entire transfer process. The apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a multiplicity of conveying elements rotating on a circular periphery. In the peripheral direction, the conveying elements have a distance to one another which changes during each rotation. A bipartite lever rod system takes care of this change of distance between the conveying elements which system always connects a conveying element with a common driving disc.
