Lost motion in the feed dog drive accommodates the drive to tape arrest and permits shutdown and startup at a known, predetermined position in a cycle. A head carries a punch and shear blade which form vent slots and cut the tape to valve length during the time that the tape is stopped. Tape is sheared to valve length at an index wheel which holds the tape by vacuum during shear and successive 90.degree. transports for solvent activation of adhesive and transfer from the wheel by bonding the activated adhesive to an end closure. A proximator forces an end closure into contact with a valve during transfer.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1975Date of Patent: October 4, 1977Assignee: Sterigard CorporationInventors: Roger K. Patent number: 4045275Abstract: The machine of this invention applies successive lengths of tape, such as tear-tape, to a continuously moving products, such as a web about to be die cut for forming boxes. The application of the tapes is registration-correlated with the product. Self-adhesive tape is drawn from a roll by a capstan roll which provides a controlled feed of the tape to an applicator wheel. The applicator wheel draws the tape around the applicator wheel, holding it by suction. When a predetermined length on the applicator wheel has passed a cut-off point, that length is cut off, and then the wheel presses its adhesive face against the moving web. The applicator wheel has the same peripheral speed as the web, but the capstan roll, though rotating with it, is substantially smaller and has a lower peripheral speed.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1975Date of Patent: August 30, 1977Inventors: Roger H. Patent number: 4038128Abstract: A compact machine for measuring, cutting and applying insulation blanket material onto sheet metal workpieces as they flow along a conveyorized lower line. The blanket material flows along an upper path. A flying shear mechanism, which travels a short distance along this path, is driven downstream when the trailing edge of a workpiece is sensed. Rack and sector mechanism brings the shear to an incisive stop at its downstream cutting position when the shear blade strikes its cutting block; hence the kinetic energy of the downstream movement is utilized for shearing. The shear remains in downstream position, to serve as a gage for starting the blanket material, until a sensor in the lower flow path senses the leading edge of the next sheet metal workpiece; this raises the shear blade and moves the shear mechanism to upstream position. A pneumatic system accurately times the cut-off mechanism to match the shearing of the blanket material to the length of the workpiece, leaving a margin if desired.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1976Date of Patent: July 26, 1977Assignee: Engel Industries, Inc.Inventor: Thomas L. Patent number: 4026754Abstract: An apparatus for applying tape, having adhesive on both of its faces, to a surface comprises an applicator drum having a cylindrical periphery that receives the tape and a series of slots extending transversely to the periphery. The applicator drum is mounted on a shaft which can be driven by a motor. The shaft is, in turn, mounted on a lever which can be pivoted by a solenoid to translate the drum toward and away from the surface. The tape is cut into discreet lengths on the drum by a knife which registers in interfitting engagement with each of the slots in the drum periphery when translated away from the surface. The solenoid and motor are synchronously operated to rotate the drum to put a length of tape in position for transfer to the surface, to translate the drum toward the surface to complete the transfer, and to translate the drum away from the surface to register the knife in interfitting engagement with a drum slot and thereby cut a next length of tape for subsequent transfer.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1976Date of Patent: May 31, 1977Assignee: Pitney-Bowes, Inc.Inventors: John J. Patent number: 4019948Abstract: An applicator is disclosed for applying pieces of tape having a fibrous surface on one side and a heat-activatable adhesive on the other side onto a receptor. The tape may be hook and loop-fastening tape and the applicator utilizes an applicating pad having wire bristles which engage the fibrous tape surface. The wire bristles support the tape such that the same may be moved into contact with a heater and then moved to apply the tape to a surface. The pad serves to uniformly affix the tape to the surface and the bristles will penetrate the fibers and force the backing and adhesive onto the surface to which the tape is to be applied. The tape may be applied to the brush and then cut to lengths or predetermined lengths of tape may be placed onto the brush.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1975Date of Patent: April 26, 1977Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Mark G. Patent number: 4003780Abstract: Apparatus for feeding and applying a length of an adhesive tape to a reusable envelope closure. Tape is fed from a supply roll by a draw roll which is in contact with the adhesive surface of the tape to frictionally advance the tape between a stationary knife blade and a rotary knife blade. The tape is cut to a desired length by the cooperating edges of the knife blades and delivered to a vacuum roll which transports the cut length of tape to the envelope and presses it onto the envelope to form a part of the reusable closure. A cooperating convex and concave roller forms the tape into a V prior to it being cut to rigidify it as it is cut. Means are also provided to vary the length of tape which is cut and to stop operation of the apparatus upon sensing the absence of an envelope beneath the apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1976Date of Patent: January 18, 1977Assignee: Champion International CorporationInventor: Robert Cohn

Patent number: RE29507Abstract: For the production of screw fasteners with plastic patches thereon, the fasteners are preheated to a high temperature. Each heated fastener pauses at a processing station where a predetermined increment of a plastic strip is severed and dropped onto the hot fastener and as the plastic melts a pressure shoe forms the plastic to the curved cross-sectional configuration of the fastener. The fasteners are then quenched. For high production a number of the fasteners are processed simultaneously on each of the repeated cycles of operation. The apparatus is readily adjustable to handle fasteners of different sizes.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1973Date of Patent: January 3, 1978Assignee: Long-Lok Fasteners CorporationInventor: Otto Kurt Schwenzfeier
