Cutting Indefinite Length Web After Assembly With Discrete Article Patents (Class 156/522)
  • Patent number: 6615890
Abstract: A tape applicator for application of a double-sided adhesive tape to a member which can be cut and assembled to form a frame or sash for glazing for a skylight, a window or a door, or which can be used to form a muntin. The tape applicator includes a drive roller for advancing members sequentially through the apparatus. The tape applicator also includes a pressure roller for urging the tape onto the member, and for urging the member into engagement with the drive roller. A guide roller guides the location of the tape to the member so that it is applied to the proper location. A cutting mechanism is automatically actuated for cutting the tape adjacent the trailing end of each member at a desired location. The cutting mechanism is actuated by a switch which is engaged by the member.

Abstract: A system for creating a coil of stamps from a web of stamps is provided. The system includes a security strip feeder which feeds a security strip having first and second sections. A first activator activates only the first section, and an applicator applies the security strip to contact the web of stamps. Thus, the activated first section adheres to the web of stamps, while the second section does not. A cutter cuts the web of stamps into a strip of stamps in a position such that at least a portion of the second section extends beyond the strip of stamps, and a second activator activates the portion of the second section extending beyond the strip. A coiler coils the strip into a coil such that the activated portion of the second section contacts and adheres onto an inner spire of the coil or back onto itself.

A replaceable cartridge is insertable into the frame and has upper and lower feed rolls which may be a laminate, film or paper, or an adhesively coated film or a film having an affinity for adhesive. The upper and lower feed rolls containing the webs of laminating or adhesive transfer material have tensioning caps which can be adjusted to provide the proper tensioning to prevent the rollers from overrunning as they rotate. Tensioning caps and the cartridges are pre-set and provided to the user. A cutter blade is positioned at the discharge side of the nip rollers and may be actuated to sever the master at any desired location. The apparatus may be operated to apply lamination to either top or bottom surfaces of a substrate or an adhesive to the top or bottom surface of the substrate or to both surfaces.

Abstract: This invention provides a method and apparatus for applying tape tabs to a traveling web, for example, for placement of fastening tabs on a running web of disposable diapers. The invention provides a cutting roll positioned to cut segments from a continuous infeeding web of tape material against a rotating anvil. The anvil, which is traveling at a speed equal to or very close to that of the infeeding tape web, carries the tape segments to a point on its tangency where a higher-speed traveling diaper web most nearly approaches, at which point the traveling diaper web is displaced slightly toward the anvil by means of a protuberance acting against the web. This movement causes it to come into contact with the next available tape segment, which becomes adhered to the higher-speed traveling web. This process provides for operation at higher speeds, higher efficiencies, greater flexibility and lower noise levels than previous processes.

Abstract: An individually wrapped absorbent article such as a sanitary napkin which is simple, compact, sanitary, and easy to unwrap for use and to dispose of after use. The absorbent article avoids the need for a separate peel strip and pouch because it is provided with a wrapper that can be folded into a pouch. Substantially the entire backsheet of the absorbent article directly faces the wrapper and is secured to it to form an assembly. In the case of a winged or tabbed type absorbent article, this configuration obviates the need for a separate peel strip to cover the garment adhesive located on the wings or tabs. The assembly is wrapped by folding the lateral flaps thereof longitudinally over one another to enclose the article to prevent the garment adhesive from becoming contaminated. The package is then tri-folded laterally to form an e-shaped pouch. Wrapping and folding can be performed by an in-line process that uses simple equipment and that does not require reversal in the direction of article conveyance.

The removable feed rolls carrying a supply of stock material to be unwound. The apparatus comprises a frame constructed and arranged to removably mount the feed rolls. A pair of nip rollers are rotatably mounted to the frame. The nip rollers define a nip area therebetween with a feed side and a discharge side. An actuating mechanism is constructed and arranged to affect nip roller rotation. The frame is constructed and arranged such that, when the feed rolls are removably mounted thereto, a master can be inserted between the feed rolls, the stock materials can then be unwound from each of feed rolls so as to be disposed on opposing sides of the master, and the master and the stock materials can thereafter be fed together into the feed side of the nip rollers.
