  • Patent number: 5318656
Abstract: To prepare an initial portion (41) on a replacement roll (4) of a substrate web, for example a printing paper web, for flying pasting, the new roll (4) is rotatably supported in apredetermined position. An adhesive application and cutter structure (5) is then placed in operative association with the roll. An initial portion (41) of the web is rolled off from the new roll, positioned on the support plate, and, in one operating step, an end, which may be jagged, is cut off and, inwardly of the cut edge (42), a perforating or tear-off line (43) is formed, to leave, between the cut edge and the tear-off line, a tear-off section (44). The web can then be repositioned on the plate (6) and a connecting adhesive (19) is applied to the upper side of the web, for subsequent flying pasting against a moving expiring web, for example, as well as a holding adhesive, applied in the inside of the tear-off section (44), so that the end portion (41) is securely attached to the roll.

  • Patent number: 5286332
Abstract: An apparatus for applying a tape onto a cartridge includes a frame and a rotatable tape roll support mounted on the frame. A pivoting tape applying arm is mounted on the frame and a pair of nip rollers are mounted on the lower end of the tape applying arm. The nip rollers allow linered tape movement only in the direction away from the tape roll. Tape unwinds from the tape roll only in response to movement of the tape applying arm after tape has been applied and before the next application. The tape travels from the tape roll, through the nip rollers and along the tape applying arm before a pin mounted on the applying arm strips the tape from its liner. A paddle then tacks the tape onto the cartridge and a buff roller presses the tape against the cartridge to insure adhesion. A cutter fixed on the frame cuts the applied tape and includes an electrically heated wire mounted in a sleeve with a ceramic backup component.

  • Patent number: 5269871
Abstract: A portable device for applying pressure sensitive adhesive coated tape to surfaces including along the top edges of baseboards and the like. The tape applying device includes two generally cylindrical application rollers rotatably mounted on a roller frame in parallel spaced relationship, together with a tape hub adapted to receive a tape roll. The tape hub and the application rollers define portions of first or second paths for tape being unwound from the tape roll with the rear surface of the tape backing disposed partially around the periphery of the first or the second application roller and extending from that to the periphery of the other application roller.

  • Patent number: 5242495
Abstract: A combined joint compound bucket and tape dispenser comprising a cylindrical container with a removable cover. A roll of dry-wall construction tape is suspended at the top of the container beneath the cover by a rod extending through the center of the tape and engaging slots in opposite sides of the container. The container includes two slotted apertures on one side of the container and a third slotted aperture on the other side of the container. The tape is reeled from the rod, out through a first aperture, guided down along the outside of the container, back into the container at the second aperture adjacent the bottom of the container. The tape passes through mud deposited in the container and exits the container on the opposite side through the third aperture. The tape is thus coated with the mud and may be torn from the container on a serrated edge at the desired lengths. A removable guide rail is also provided to guide the tape from the first to the second apertures.

  • Patent number: 5174850
Abstract: A tape dispenser, particularly suited for masking tape or like low-tensile strength adhesive tape, and having a frame with a hub portion that provides a cylindrical surface for rotatably mounting a roll of tape and having a central finger-receiving aperture therein. A support wall extends radially from a first side of the hub portion to hold an axially extending flange spaced from a minor segment of the cylindrical surface, whereby the finger-receiving aperture and the flange provide means for grasping the dispenser and not interfering with the rotation of a roll of tape mounted on the dispenser. A swinging arm has one end mounted to the first side of the hub portion, at a location generally radially opposite the flange for rotation about an axis parallel to the axis of the cylindrical surface, and has an application roller mounted at its other end to also rotate about an axis parallel to the axis of the cylindrical surface.

  • Patent number: 5171397
Abstract: A tape dispenser (6) is provided (FIGS. 7, 8 and 9) having a movable cover and keeper (27) which slides into a circumferential housing (5) to keep a roll of tape (2) on an axle (3) and hold a brake plate (28) in a circumferential housing (5). The cover (27) has an opening (29) for inserting the thumb to push against the brake plate (28) which operates as a brake when pressed against the roll of tape (2) inside the dispenser (6) by pushing the roll of tape (2) against the housing back (30) to prevent the roll of tape (2) from rotating when a tape-cutting blade (7) at the outside wall of the dispenser is pushed against the tape and given a slight right or left twist to cut it. Plane surfaces (14 and 17) are provided adjacent to the cutting blade (7) for pressing the tape against an object (13) to which tape is being attached to secure firm attachment of the tape before it is cut with the blade. Only one hand is necessary to firmly apply and cut tape by using this dispenser.
