Abstract: Rear view mirror mounting brackets are adhesively bonded to a windshield using a relatively small, portable rework fixture that can be temporarily secured to an automotive windshield by means of suction cups. The framework of the fixture supports a pair of movable guide rods connected to a metal block equipped with a heating element and having a surface that holds the adhesive coated mounting bracket. The guide rods are equipped with compressible springs that maintain the block and associated mounting bracket in close contact with the windshield during curing of the layer of heat-curable bonding adhesive present on the surface of the bracket that is in contact with the windshield.

Abstract: The handheld paper border pasting and dispensing device has a container for holding a quantity of liquid paste. Preferably, unistructural with the container are two side arms which provide attachment for a paper holder below the container. Also, preferably unistructural with the container are two harness plates which provide attachment for a paper guide from the rear of the container. The paper guide redirects a paper border in a transverse direction for application against a wall or near vertical surface. A flow regulator is attached to the container for providing control of paste being dispensed from the container. Also attached to the container over the flow regulator is a contact guide which has a seal portion for sealing off part of the flow regulator not in contact with a paper border.

Abstract: The object is applied to the glass surface by a platen assembly mounted inside the apparatus which resiliently urges the object against the glass surface. In one embodiment, the platen assembly is mounted on a resilient diaphragm within the apparatus and the application of a vacuum causes the diaphragm to move the platen assembly towards the object, thereby causing the platen assembly to urge the object against the glass surface. In a second embodiment, the platen assembly is mounted to the apparatus shell or housing and the apparatus is sealed against the glass surface by a resilient bellows. Upon application of a vacuum, the bellows compresses, thereby causing the platen assembly to urge the object against the glass surface.

Abstract: A heated shoe and cooled pressure roller assembly for composite prepreg application is provided. The shoe assembly includes a heated forward contact surface having a curved pressure surface. The following cooled roller provides a continuous pressure to the thermoplastic while reducing the temperature to approximately 5.degree. C. below glass transition temperature. Electric heating coils inside the forward portion of the shoe heat a thermoplastic workpiece to approximately 100.degree. C. above the glass transition. Immediately following the heated contact surface, a cooled roller cools the work. The end sharpened shape of the heated shoe trailing edge tends to prevent slag buildup and maintain a uniform, relaxed stress fabrication.

  • Patent number: 5569352
Abstract: A machine for seam welding overlapping heat weldable lengths of covering, comprising a wheel-borne frame having a heating element suspended on one side designed for insertion between an underlying and an overlying length of covering. The machine has pressing means and driving wheels for compressive stress of the upper side of the overlying length of covering and for movement of the machine in the longitudinal direction of the overlapping seam or lap. To make possible wheel transport of the machine, with the heating element raised from the underlying surface, and to make possible an easier guiding of the heating element between the two lengths of covering in the lap, the machine has especially positioned transport wheels which in the welding position will be lifted clear of the underlying surface, but by tilting the machine can be brought into contact with the underlying surface, so that the machine can be wheeled by means of the transport wheels.

Abstract: A method of and apparatus for detecting flaws on a composite surface laid-up by a fiber placement machine. The invention includes a vision imaging system (78) mounted on the machine so that it has a field of view of the composite tows after they have been compacted by a compaction roller (74). In one embodiment, the visual imaging system (78) includes a laser analog displacement sensor. The imaging system provides a computer analysis system (84) with data regarding the location of the edges of the individual composite tows. The computer imaging system (84) uses the tow edge location data to compute the location and size of gaps or overlaps between the tows or the presence of foreign material. This information is useful in quality control models to evaluate the manufacturing process or final part quality.

Abstract: Tools for finishing joints at flat surfaces or corners of wallboard walls after adhesive and tape have been applied are attached to the applicator tool by a rotatable yoke connection near the roller of the applicator so that the finishing tool will follow the applicator tool. The finishing tool includes a roller rotatable about an axle for embedding tape into the adhesive. Frame structure rotatably supported on the roller axle is provided with trowel means having a working surface moving parallel to the wallboard surface and placed close to the roller, at least on the sides, to spread adhesive pressed from under the tape back over the tape. Finishing means attached to the frame structure to follow the trowel collects the excess adhesive and distributes it in a smooth surface generally in the plane of the wallboard, filling in any voids left by trowel action. A cylindrical roller is used for joints in flat wallboard.

Abstract: A prepreg tape is firstly prepared by bonding prepreg layer to a backing paper and then the prepreg tape is cut to a depth enough to cut the prepreg tape but not the backing paper. A unnecessary portion of the prepreg tape is removed from the backing paper to obtain a cut prepreg tape. A laminating attachment is moved in a predetermined direction while urging the prepreg tape against the surface of an operating table. The cut prepreg tape is peeled off from the backing paper and the peeled off prepreg tape is bonded to the operating table. The cut prepreg tapes are successively oriented in a predetermined direction and juxtaposed to form a laminated sheet. When the sheet is mounted on a mold of a predetermined shape. When the impregnated thermosetting resin is perfectly cured under heat and pressure a product useful for assembling various vehicles can be obtained.
