  • Patent number: 6517650
Abstract: This invention pertains to apparatus and methods for intermittently creating ultrasonic bonds in sequentially advancing work piece segments, in a nip. The work piece segments are up to about 0.25 inch thick. The apparatus comprises a frame, anvil support apparatus supporting an anvil, and horn support apparatus supporting an ultrasonic horn. The ultrasonic horn and anvil are collectively mounted and configured such that the ultrasonic horn and anvil can be brought together to define the nip. The frame, anvil support apparatus, and horn support apparatus collectively are sufficiently rigid that the horn and anvil can be brought together with interference levels of about 0.000 to about 0.008 inch at a raised bonding portion in combination with defining sufficient nip pressure to develop ultrasonic bonds in work piece segments passing through the nip. The method comprehends bringing a back-up roll, mounted above the ultrasonic horn, into engagement with the ultrasonic horn, to directly support the horn.

  • Patent number: 6517671
Abstract: Method and apparatus comprising a novel ramped anvil roll for cooperating with a rotary ultrasonic horn and creating ultrasonic bonds in a work piece passing between the anvil roll and ultrasonic horn. A relatively smaller radius portion of the anvil roll extends about a first portion of the circumference, and a relatively larger-radius raised bonding element extends about a second portion of the circumference. An outer surface at at least one of a front and rear end portion of the raised bonding element defines a transition gradient between the raised operating surface and the relatively smaller radius portion. The transition gradient defines a modified sinusoidally-shaped curved loading surface including an inflection locus, the curved loading surface representing a relatively constantly changing angle as measured against respective radii of the anvil roll in combination with advancing along the corresponding portion of the circumference.

  • Patent number: 6502616
Abstract: An apparatus and method for folding an adhesive face of tape upon itself and dispensing the folded tape is disclosed. Tape is dispensed from a roll, through a guiding collar having a curved space extending around and defined by a core mounted within a central opening of the guiding collar. As the tape exits the curved space, the tape is correspondingly curved in cross-section, with a portion of the sticky, adhesive face of the tape confronting another portion of the adhesive face. The correspondingly curved tape passes under an element for compressing or pinching the tape, which folds the tape upon itself and compresses the confronting portions of the sticky, adhesive face of the tape together. Rotation of the guiding collar varies the position of the curved space to permit adjustment of the fold width of the tape.

Abstract: An improved film sealing and cutting apparatus (10) for use with a shrink-wrap machine that individually wraps articles (219) sequentially with shrink-wrap film material (200) of different possible thickness and composition, especially thick, tough film which would be difficult to seal. The apparatus (10) includes two pairs of selectively heated rollers (97, 98). Overlapping layers (209) of film material wrapped around an article are passed between peripheral surfaces of each roller pair. The first roller pair forms a thermal conditioning pre-seal (208) between opposing surfaces of the overlapping layers by application of heat and pressure along the peripheral surfaces of the first roller pair. The second roller pair then completes the seal and cuts through the opposing surfaces, leaving a margin between a cutting path formed by the peripheral surfaces of the second roller pair and the seal.

  • Patent number: 6361308
Abstract: A system for embossing and crimping a plurality of sheet material web layers, including a first, second and third roll. The first roll including at least one element extending radially therefrom. The second roll has a resilient surface that engages the element to form a first nip therebetween. The third roll has a non-resilient surface that engages the element to form a second nip therebetween. In a preferred embodiment, the first roll includes at least a first and second element extending radially therefrom, with the first element having a greater radial height than the second element, which avoids contact with the third roll. The layers of sheet material web are embossed by the first and second elements as they are passed through the first nip, and are crimped together by the first element as they are passed through the second nip. In a preferred embodiment, the first roll includes a plurality of first and second elements arranged in a pattern.

Abstract: A compact disk identification system (50) utilizes a destructible adhesive sticker (20) to identify the owner of a compact disk (40). The sticker includes a top layer (22) that is marked with printed indicia (26) providing ownership information. The top layer is backed by an adhesive face (34) covered with an adhesive providing an adhesive strength exceeding the tear strength of the top layer. The top layer is affixed to the compact disk using a base plate (52) and a pestle (54) having a central cylinder (62). A very close tolerance between the cylinder, the disk, the top layer, and the pestle provides a substantially perfect central alignment of the top layer on the disk.

Abstract: The invention is related to a mechanical device and method for labeling sticker on business card type of CD, and the device includes a sticker accepting base, a CD accepting base and a resilient unit. The said sticker-accepting base has an accepting plane for placing labeling stickers and the center of the said accepting plane is a central hole. Another side of the accepting plane is with a support foot base for standing up the sticker accepting base. The said CD accepting base is as an “U” type of module and the upper side is with two vertical and parallel side plates along two edges of the base, therefore, the turnabout of sticker accepting plane is limited and the vertical movement of CD can be guided. The top ends of the two side plates of the CD accepting base are ladder type of planes and the said ladder planes are for placing two parallel straight edges of CD. Central part of the CD accepting base is a positioning central pillar.

  • Patent number: 6338770
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sealing a business form having pressure activated adhesive utilizes a minimum amount of equipment in a simple arrangement that has optimum versatility. Sealing is accomplished utilizing a first set of rolls which has a first substantially continuous roll and a second roll having a non-round shape with at least one projection (and typically having a configuration that in end view substantially simulates an airplane propeller including first and second projections angularly spaced about 180°). The first and second rolls are mounted in position for rotation about parallel axes so that the projections come into operative association with the first roll to perform the sealing action in a first position, and at a second position the entire second roll is not in operative association with the first roll. A stepper motor controls the rotation of the second roll.
