Patent number: 4411726Abstract: A composite container is disclosed having a synthetic plastic end closure member spin-bonded to the thermoplastic synthetic plastic inner liner layer of a composite container body wall. The synthetic plastic end closure member includes annular downwardly depending inner fin and outer chime portions which are concentrically spaced to define therebetween an annular groove. One of the body and end members is rotated relative to the other member when they are in spaced vertical alignment, whereupon the members are axially displaced together to wedge the upper end of the body member into the annular groove of the end closure member. During this spin bonding process, the fin portion of the end closure member is supported against radial inward deflection, whereby the spinning frictional engagement between the fin portion of the end closure member and the inner liner layer of the body member causes softening and subsequent bonding of the fin portion to the inner liner layer.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1982Date of Patent: October 25, 1983Assignee: Boise Cascade CorporationInventors: Stephen E. Patent number: 4293354Abstract: A machine and process useful for fastening a closure member to a container with an upstanding tubular wall, an end edge of which is folded over onto itself to form a folded-over, reinforced portion of double thickness at that end, the closure member having an upstanding tubular inner wall conforming to the inner surface of the folded-over, reinforced portion and a downstanding tubular outer wall connected thereto and conforming to the outer surface of the folded-over, reinforced portion, thereby forming a tubular channel in which the folded-over, reinforced portion is seated in frictional engagement, which comprises a dish-shaped fastening head adapted to be positioned around the closed end of the container with an upstanding side wall in contact with the side wall of the closure member and functioning as an anvil, and radially-moveable punching points for punching selected portions of the upstanding tubular inner wall of the channel into the inner surface of the folded-over, reinforced portion against the poType: GrantFiled: August 30, 1979Date of Patent: October 6, 1981Assignee: Brown CompanyInventor: Richard G. Patent number: 4293353Abstract: An aerosol type container wherein a separate product bag of plastics material is provided. The bag is of a larger size than the opening in which the valve cup is seated and thus must be gathered or pleated to pass through that reduced diameter opening. The initially gathered or pleated bag material is compressively engaged between the top curl defining the opening and the valve cup and is heated to a molding and bonding temperature so that a molded ring conforming to the adjacent portions of the top curl and the valve seat is formed, this part eliminating the usual need for a compound or other sealant between the valve cup and the top curl.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1978Date of Patent: October 6, 1981Assignee: The Continental Group, Inc.Inventors: Peter G. Patent number: 4284446Abstract: A device for obtaining a culture sample from a particular location in a body passage while avoiding contamination of the sample by materials located elsewhere in the body passage includes a stiff flexible tube. A sleeve of pliant waterproof material surrounds the tube and the distal end of the sleeve is tucked into the distal end of the tube. A bag of pliant waterproof material is bonded to the outside surface of the sleeve to form a waterproof seal extending all around the sleeve, the bag enclosing the distal end of the tube and the distal end of the sleeve. The bag has a limited burst strength and is broken after the distal end has been emplaced at a particular pre-sampling level to expose the sterile sleeve that was tucked into the tube. As the tube is inserted a short distance further, the portion of the sleeve that was tucked into the tube everts out of the distal end of the tube to form a sterile curtain surrounding the distal end of the tube and protecting it from contamination.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1980Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Inventor: Robert F. Patent number: 4282699Abstract: For sealing the open end of a flanged container, a heated reciprocable sealing block having a heat emitting surface is arranged with its path of reciprocatory movement in general alignment with a container to be sealed and a sealing head is mounted on the sealing block by mounting means which is arranged to maintain a part of the sealing head in close heat transferring contact with the heat emitting surface of the sealing block and is also adapted to accommodate moderate misalignment of the sealing block and the container to be sealed. Containers to be sealed are mounted on individual carrier plates which are movable intermittently through an enclosure which may serve to isolate the sealing operation from atmosphere, the containers being sealed by a strip of lid stock which is secured by the sealing block to the flanges of the open ended containers. Following a sealing operation, the lid stock is gripped and severed so that each container is provided with an individual cover.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1979Date of Patent: August 11, 1981Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventor: Joseph J. Patent number: 4283284Abstract: A hollow fiber diffusion device comprises a bundle of hollow fibers disposed in a generally rigid, tubular housing having relatively diametrically enlarged manifold members adjacent opposite housing ends. In accordance with this invention, a relatively resilient plastic sleeve member is carried at each end of the housing and sealed to it. Each sleeve member carries an added inner sleeve of less inner diameter than the inner sleeve, being coaxially positioned with the housing to receive, hold, and center the ends of the bundle. Preferably, the sleeve is made of a material which sealingly adheres to the potting compound to facilitate the sealing of the system.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1979Date of Patent: August 11, 1981Assignee: Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.Inventor: William J. Patent number: 4266993Abstract: A method for the sealing of a cover strip onto packing containers, in particular non-returnable containers for liquid foodstuffs, which containers are of the type which are manufactured from laminated material comprising layers of, among others, thermoplastics, is disclosed. Packing containers of this type are generally provided with an opening arrangement in the form of a pouring opening punched out in the top side of the container, which is covered by a tear-off cover strip. The cut edge extending around the pouring opening is in this case situated inside the container which makes necessary special measures in order to prevent the occurrence of bacteria-collecting corners and pockets. This is a problem in particular in the relatively thick type of packing laminate which comprises layers of foamed thermoplastic material. It is often also necessary to seal off the free cut edge, since the laminate occasionally comprises layers which for various reasons must not come into contact with the contents.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1979Date of Patent: May 12, 1981Assignee: Tetra Pak International ABInventor: Jan-Erik Olsen

Patent number: 4264316Abstract: A container having a generally rectangular rim surrounding its opening is closed by a foil membrane that extends over the rim and is sealed to the rim by inductively heating it. The membrane does not correspond in configuration to the rim, but instead its side and end margins curve away from the sides and ends, respectively, of the container rim, so that the peripheral margin of the membrane is located closer to the container rim at the corners of the rim than at the sides or ends of the rim. The foil of the membrane is coated with a resin bonding material, and when the membrane is placed in a rapidly oscillating magnetic field, its foil is inductively heated throughout the entire area that overlies the rim, thereby rendering the bonding material plastic and establishing a uniform bond between the rim and membrane.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1979Date of Patent: April 28, 1981Inventor: David S.
