  • Patent number: 6588062
Abstract: A hinge assembly for rotatably coupling a first member to a second member. A cylindrical pintle is secured to the second member. A friction element secured to the first member includes first and second cylindrical walls that wrap at least substantially circumferentially around the pintle in opposing first and second directions, respectively, providing equal resistance to relative rotation therebetween in both directions. A protuberance extends radially from the pintle, into a corresponding slot in at least one of the cylindrical walls, and engages an end of the slot when the first member and second member achieve a first predefined angular relationship, the friction element storing energy from relative movement between the friction element and pintle when the protuberance is engaged at the slot end.

  • Patent number: 6554093
Abstract: A vehicular hood device has a hinge serving also as a coupling link mechanism. The hinge in a usual time allows a hood to make opening and closing movements about a hinge pin connecting a second link to the hood. When an obstacle collided with the vehicle to lift the hood by an actuator, the hinge enables the extended first and second links to determine a hood raise position. The hinge includes a stopper pawl. The stopper pawl has rigidity designed to be deformable by operation of the actuator but not to be bent by a usual hood opening and closing force, thus preventing the hood from floating during normal operation.

  • Patent number: 6442799
Abstract: A hinge comprising a base and a plate rotataby coupled to the base about a turn axis fixed in the base. The hinge further includes a swing member rotably coupled to the plate about a pivot axis fixed relative to the plate and a spring coupled between the base and the plate which urges the plate to rotate about the turn axis in a first direction. The plate has limited rotation in the first direction about the turn axis as the swing arm has limited movement relative to the plate about the pivot axis in a second direction, opposite of the first direction. The limited movement of the swing arm is defined by a pivot limit. Movement of the swing arm toward and away from the pivot limit occurs about the pivot axis without effect of the spring on the arm. During contact of the swing arm with the pivot limit, the arm and the plate can move about the turn axis against the effect of the spring.

Abstract: A resilient detent mechanism for selectively maintaining a vehicle door in the open position is provided. The detent mechanism including a hinge pin receptacle adapted to allow insertive mounting with a door hinge by engagement with a hinge pin of the door hinge. The detent mechanism also includes a planar side surface to contact both the stationary and pivotal components of the door hinge. The detent also includes a working corner portion that contacts a portion of the door hinge and tends to maintain the vehicle door in the open position. The contact between the working corner portion and the stationary component of the door hinge can be overcome by a sufficient door closing effort.

  • Patent number: 6099092
Abstract: A locking arrangement for a cabinet, the cabinet having a top panel, a base panel, and at least one pivoting door panel, with the panels connected to one another to define an internal storage region, includes a cam-shaped projection formed on one of the hinge element and the corresponding side pane. The cam has first and second surfaces formed contiguous with the respective one of the hinge element and the corresponding side panel, and a retaining member formed on the other of the hinge element and the corresponding side panel. The retaining member has a recess formed therein. The cam-shaped projection and the retaining member frictionally cooperate with one another to maintain the door panel in the closed position with the cam-shaped projection engaged in the recess. The cam-shaped projection further maintains the door in an at least partially opened position when the cam-shaped projection is disengaged from the recess, in contact with the retaining member.

  • Patent number: 6074030
Abstract: A refrigerator has a refrigerator cabinet and a refrigerator door. The refrigerator door is arranged to open and close with respect to the refrigerator cabinet. A storage compartment is associated with either the refrigerator cabinet or the refrigerator door, and a container door cooperates with the compartment to form a container. First and second hinge members are on the container door, and third and fourth hinge members are on the compartment. The first and third hinge members form a first hinge and the second and fourth hinge members form a second hinge between the container door and the compartment. Ribs are on the container door adjacent to, and on either side of, the first and second hinge members. The ribs contact the compartment adjacent to the third and fourth hinge members in order to permit the container door to move quietly into opened and closed positions with respect to the compartment.

  • Patent number: 6038737
Abstract: A spring-hinged actuator has a first attachment member (1) joined pivotally to a second attachment member (2) with a hinge (3). The first attachment member and the second attachment member are spring-tensioned pivotally on the hinge with at least one torsional spring (4, 5) fastened to the first attachment member. At least one base torsional extension (6, 8) of the torsional spring is positioned to direct base torsional-spring pressure against the first attachment member in a first rotational direction and to direct torsionally rotative spring pressure in an oppositely second rotational direction against the second attachment member. The first attachment member and the second attachment member have sides at a dihedral angle proximate an axis of the hinge. The dihedral angle is maintained in opposition to opposite-directionally rotative pressure from the torsional spring by a releasable tensioner (14) that is extended intermediate the first attachment member and the second attachment member.

  • Patent number: 6035490
Abstract: A simple hinge having an integral detent and stop member for a cover on an electrophotographic printing machine. The hinge is formed from a relatively lightweight material and has an aperture to secore a pin for attaching a cover. A detent is formed into on leg of the hinge so that the door cover is forced over the detent as it is opened which then holds the door in the open position. The cover is closed by pushing the edge of the door over the detent in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 6003204
Abstract: A hood hinge mechanism having a pivot pin having a D-shaped cross sectional shape positioned within a recess. The hood and pin are pivotal to a position whereat the D-shaped cross section is oriented to pass through a slotted opening to the recess to thereby allow the hood to be removed or installed on the vehicle. A bracket coupled with the hood abuts a support member when the hood is pivoted to its fully open position such that the hood is held open by the weight of the hood and is generally blocked from being detached from the vehicle unless acted upon by an operator.

  • Patent number: 5975663
Abstract: The permissible degree of opening of a cabinet door is limited by the interengagement between a cover member for an upper door hinge and abutment structure carried by the door itself. In a preferred embodiment, the abutment structure is defined by another cover member that is secured upon an upper portion of the door. The hinge cover member is provided with a tab that projects into a cavity or recessed section of the door cover member and a portion of this projecting tab is directly engaged by a portion of the door cover member to limit the permissible angular door movement. Furthermore, the hinge cover member is preferably mounted for movement relative to the cabinet. In the preferred embodiment, the hinge cover member is pivoted in direct response to engagement with the first abutment portion of the door cover member and the door is prevented from further pivotal movement when the first abutment portion of the door cover member engages a stop portion defined by the projecting tab of the hinge cover member.
