Abstract: A roller shade assembly for a shade made from a relatively heavy and/or stiff material is described. The roller shade assembly includes a cylindrical member that is attached to the shade. A control mechanism rotates the cylindrical member for winding the shade upon the cylindrical member. Thus, winding the cylindrical member in one direction causes the shade to retract, while unwinding the cylindrical member in an opposite direction causes the shade to extend. In order to maintain the shade in alignment as the shade is retracted and extended, the roller shade assembly includes a pair of opposing retaining members that may have a disc-like shape. The retaining members may be positioned adjacent to the vertical edges of the shade and have an effective diameter larger than the diameter of the shade when fully wound and retracted. In one embodiment, the roller shade assembly can further include fixed edge guides for further maintaining the shade in alignment.

Abstract: A window shade apparatus that is configured to function in an aircraft. In one aspect, the shade apparatus has a frame defining an opening. The frame can vary in size and shape, as it is configured to substantially conform to an interior portion of the fuselage of an aircraft. The opening defined by the frame is, in one aspect, sized to substantially overlay at least one of the windows of the aircraft. Therefore, the frame substantially envelops the window and the opening permits viewing therethrough. The shade apparatus also has a shade that is configured to at least partially cover the opening and a drive mechanism to extend or retract the shade.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for combining a retractable shade with a drapery rod include an outer rod and an inner rod rotatably supported on an interior of the outer rod. A motive mechanism is supported on an interior of the outer rod external to the inner rod for rotating the inner rod relative to the outer rod. A fabric is coupled to the inner rod. The outer rod has a slot through which the fabric extends and retracts. When the blind is in a retracted condition, the drapery rod conceals the blind. Thus, the drapery rod is a monolithic combination drapery rod. The motive mechanism may include a motor. The blind may be moved by operation of the motor through a wired or wireless connection. A drapery may be movably supported on the outer rod. In another embodiment, a separate decorative drapery rod conceals a motorized drapery rod within.

Abstract: A window shade system comprising a roller tube, a top casing, and a shade having a first end engaged with the roller tube and a second end engaged with the top casing such that the shade forms a bight between its ends that separates the shade into a front portion and a back portion. A rod is disposed in the bight. A lift mechanism, typically a motor, rotates the roller tube and moves the shade between a raised position where the bight is adjacent the top casing and a lowered position where the bight is distanced from the top casing. When the shade is in the lowered position, the front portion of the shade comprises a decorative fabric layer and the back portion comprises a sound attenuating layer, such as a polymer film with filler material or mass loaded vinyl. The window shade system typically comprises side casings that have channels for receiving the side edges of the shade.
