    Abstract: This disclosure provides a method of recycling heat during operation of a plant in which equipment for processing at least two different materials is co-located. The method comprises a first process for processing a first material and a second process for processing a second material. The second material has a melting point that is less than a melting point of the first material. During the first process, the first material is subjected to a first melting process and then subjected to a first cooling process that includes solidification of the first material. During the second process, the second material is subjected to a second melting process and then subjected to a second cooling process that includes solidification of the second material. The method comprises recovering heat from the first cooling process and using at least some of the heat as a heat source for the second melting process.

    Abstract: A method for manufacturing a bi-material sleeve is provided. The sleeve includes an annular outer sleeve and an annular inner sleeve bonded to each other. The bottom pouring of the outer sleeve is carried out in a casting space delimited by a wall of a first ingot mold and by an outer upwardly moveable wall of a second ingot mold concentric with the first. The moveable wall of the second ingot mold is raised so as to uncover the skin of the outer sleeve which has solidified thereagainst. The bottom pouring and the solidification of the inner sleeve are carried out in a casting space delimited by said skin and an inner stationary wall of said second ingot mold, the bonding of both sleeves being effected by diffusion between said sleeves. Forging and/or machining of one of said bonded sleeves are optionally carried out. A device for using this method and a sleeve produced by this method are also provided.

    Abstract: At the operation of a suction pump, a negative pressure is generated in a supply-side pipe line, a cooling passageway of a mold, and a return-side pipe line. Cooling water stored in a water tank is sucked by the negative pressure, flows from a first feed-water inlet to the supply-side pipe line, flows through the supply-side pipe line, and enters the cooling passageway of the mold. After the cooling water cools down the mold while flowing through the cooling passageway of the mold, it flows out to the return-side pipe line. The cooling water stored in the water tank is sucked by the negative pressure, flows from a second feed-water port to the bypass pipe line, and enters the return-side pipe line via the bypass pipe line.

    Abstract: A method and system for eliminating near-surface porosity and surface tear defects in metal castings. The system includes a complex casting mold having at least one core pin or other regions susceptible to new surface porosity and surface tears. The system further includes a copper rod fused internally to the core pin to extract heat from a molten metal introduced in the mold. The copper rod extracts heat at a low thermal flux, preventing near surface porosity and surface tears. Moreover, the copper rod extracts heat from the hotter regions of the casting causing it to solidify at a rate comparable to the rate of solidification of other portions of the casting, thereby allowing uniform solidification of the casting.

    Abstract: The invention provides a method of reducing butt curl during DC casting of a metal ingot. The ingot is cast in at least two stages, including an initial casting stage and then a steady-state casting stage carried out at higher casting speed. The emerging ingot is cooled by directing a liquid coolant onto its outer surface. During the first casting stage, the liquid coolant is directed in the form of at least two streams, including a constant first stream in the form of a series of first jets, and an intermittent second stream in the form of a series of second jets. The first and second jets impact the outer surface at locations spaced from each other peripherally and/or longitudinally of the ingot. Both the first and second streams experience film boiling when they contact the ingot. The invention includes apparatus for the method.
