    Abstract: A method of anchoring tubing in a bore comprises: providing first tubing having a section with a wall configured to provide outer surface portions describing a diameter less than a first diameter. The tubing is located within a bore comprising a first section having an internal diameter greater than the first diameter and a second section having an internal diameter corresponding to the first diameter, with the tubing section in the first section of the bore. The tubing section is then reconfigured such that the outer surface portions describe a tubing diameter greater than the first diameter. The tubing is then axially translated relative to the bore to locate the tubing section in the second section of the bore such that the outer surface portions are restrained to the first diameter by the bore, and the outer surface portions engage with the bore.

    Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for cutting tubulars in a wellbore. In one aspect of the invention, a cutting tool having radially disposed rolling element cutters is provided for insertion into a wellbore to a predetermined depth where a tubular therearound will be cut into an upper and lower portion. The cutting tool is constructed and arranged to be rotated while the actuated cutters exert a force on the inside wall of the tubular, thereby severing the tubular therearound. In one aspect, the apparatus is run into the well on wireline which is capable of bearing the weight of the apparatus while supplying a source of electrical power to at least one downhole motor which operates at least one hydraulic pump. The hydraulic pump operates a slip assembly to fix the downhole apparatus within the wellbore prior to operation of the cutting tool. Thereafter, the pump operates a downhole motor to rotate the cutting tool while the cutters are actuated.

    Abstract: A tool is provided for preventing the rotation of a downhole tool or rotary pump stator, the tool comprising a tubular housing and a jaw which is biased radially outwardly from the tool to engage the casing wall for arresting tool rotation and providing significant stabilization of a rotary pump. In doing so, the tool housing moves oppositely to rest against the casing opposite the jaw. The tool housing and the downhole tool are thereby restrained and stabilized by the casing wall. The tool's jaw is released by opposite tool rotation. Preferably, the jaw is biased outwardly from the tool housing to a casing-engaging position by a torsional member, housed along the axis of the hinge of the jaw. The tool is released from the casing by opposite tool rotation which increasingly compresses the jaw toward the housing, twisting the torsional member into torsion, which then acts to urge the jaw outwardly again. Overextension of the jaw during assembly is prevented using cooperating stops in the jaw and the housing.

    Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for expanding a first tubular against a second tubular. In one aspect, an expander tool includes a mandrel coupled to a spline assembly such that an annular space is formed between the same. Seals are placed between the mandrel and the spline assembly to retain a fluid in the annular space. The fluid may be used to actuate one or more expander members disposed on the spline assembly. The spline assembly is movably connected to a housing, which is coupled to a torque anchor. In operation, the mandrel is rotated, which, in turn, rotates the expander members. Rotation of the mandrel also causes the spline assembly to extend axially, thereby pulling a first seal closer to a second seal. As a result, the pressure in the annular space rises due to the compression of the fluid in the annular space. The rise in pressure extends the expander members into contact with the first tubular and expands the first tubular against the second tubular.

    Abstract: Tools for expanding downhole tubulars into each other or in open hole are disclosed. One embodiment uses a movable cone biased by Bellville washers to move longitudinally against such bias and allow collets to move radially in or out to a predetermined maximum diameter. A release system allows collet retraction to avoid hang up on removal. In an alternate embodiment, more suitable for open hole applications, pressurized gas pushes a movable cone longitudinally against the collets. A stationary cone is on the opposite side of the collets from the movable cone. The collet rides out or in between the cones and raises the gas pressure when forced in. A pressure actuated release allows the lower cone to shift downwardly to allow the collets to retract for removal.

In one example the receiver deployment section uses pistons disposed in openings in the fluid conduit to push the receivers away from the conduit as pressure in the conduit is increased.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus to provide a large bore hook hanger system incorporating sand exclusion at a junction in a multilateral wellbore includes the running of a lateral liner having an expandable sleeve positioned thereon to bridge a milled window from the lateral borehole to the primary borehole, expandable sleeve including a pre-machined window and a hook to hang the liner from the primary borehole. The hook further acts to center the pre-machined window in the expandable sleeve to provide access to the primary wellbore. The expandable sleeve is preferably covered on its outer surface with an elastomeric material and is outwardly concentric to an expandable packer for run-in. Once the expandable sleeve is positioned at the appropriate location in the junction, the expandable packer is inflated thus permanently deforming the expandable sleeve into contact with the open hole of the lateral borehole thereby preventing sand or gravel ingress to the primary borehole.

Landing nipples and liner hangers can be formed in situ. valves can be deployed to a selected downhole location and there sealed to the casing or liner without separate packers. Casing can be deployed downhole in reduced-diameter lengths and then expanded to case a well without requiring larger diameter bores and casing further uphole. The invention enables simplified downhole working, and enables a well to be drilled & produced with the minimum downhole bore throughout its depth, obviating the need for large bores.

The liner is made of a highly wear-resistant material, like a cobalt or nickel base alloy, and the jacket tube is made of a tough alloy, like steel. In the manufacturing process the liner material is packed into the jacket tube in the form of a powdery material which may be pre-pressed or pre-sintered. The packing is arranged such as to leave a central free space in the jacket tube, and the jacket tube may be surrounded by an encapsulating tube. The jacket tube or the encapsulating tube is closed either before or after evacuation, and the closed tube arrangement is subjected to a combined heat and pressure treatment at temperatures of at least 900.degree. C., but below the melting point of the relevant materials and at pressures of at least 900 bar. The compound body thus obtained is formed with a full-area metallic bond between the liner and the jacket tube.
