Publication number: 20080149350Abstract: A material that reacts to produced hydrocarbons acts as a latch to retain a stored potential energy force. In a specific application, a sliding sleeve valve is held away from a circulating port to allow drilling mud to be circulated out. Later, when the well is put on production, the lock that holds collets in a groove releases as exposure to produced hydrocarbons at a retaining sleeve makes it get soft. This, in turn, allows a spring force to run the collets out of their groove and straddle the circulation port between two o-rings on the shifting sleeve to close the port. The closure of the port directs produced hydrocarbons to screens that had been bypassed when mud was circulated out due to ports being the path of least resistance.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2006Publication date: June 26, 2008Inventors: Travis E. Patent number: 7357198Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus for use in wellbores and particularly, but not exclusively, to circulating subs used during downhole drilling operations. The apparatus includes a control groove and a pin received within the control groove for determining whether or not a longitudinal movement of a piston in a given direction relative to the apparatus body will move the apparatus between open and closed configurations. The apparatus further includes a control member located between and movable relative to the body and the piston. The control groove is defined in one of the piston and control member, and the pin is provided on the other of the piston and control member. Means are also provided for constraining movement of the piston relative to the body to longitudinal movement only. The invention thus provides an apparatus which has improved reliability in moving between open and closed configurations.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2004Date of Patent: April 15, 2008Assignee: Smith International, Inc.Inventors: Bruce Mcgarian, Rory McCrae Tulloch, Neil Andrew Moir

Patent number: 7331392Abstract: A differential pressure valve has a valve body containing a main piston axially moveable therein to open a fluid inlet to a fluid outlet at preset high pressure and to close at a preset lower pressure. A high pressure trigger piston and a low pressure trigger piston are operable in the main piston to alternately engage and lock the main piston to the valve body in one of the closed and open positions. A ball shifts in a port in the main piston to alternately straddle between at least one annular locking groove in the valve body and a release recess in a respective trigger piston. The ball can shift to alternately reside to straddle the valve body and main piston in the locked position or to straddle the main piston and trigger piston in the unlocked position. The trigger pistons and main pistons are mechanically biased to urge the pistons against the fluid pressure at the inlet.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2005Date of Patent: February 19, 2008Assignee: G. Publication number: 20080029274Abstract: A technique is provided that utilizes one or both of a control line actuation mechanism and a connector protection mechanism for use in a wellbore environment. Upon landing a lower well assembly and an upper well assembly at a desired wellbore location, control line connectors are engaged. The control line actuation mechanism and/or connector protection mechanism facilitate the formation of a desirable control line connection.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 13, 2006Publication date: February 7, 2008Inventors: Gary L. Patent number: 7311153Abstract: A technique that is usable with a well includes providing a sequencing valve to in a first state to communicate a first flow through a first port of the valve and in a second state close fluid communication through the first port. The technique includes communicating a second flow through an orifice of the sequencing valve during the second state of the valve and using a pressure drop across the orifice to bias the sequencing valve to remain in the second state.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2005Date of Patent: December 25, 2007Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: L. Patent number: 7306043Abstract: The invention is a system and method a system used to control multiple downhole tools with one control line. The downhole tools may comprise any hydraulically actuated tools, such as valves, packers, or perforating guns. Each tool is associated with an indexer, in one embodiment, so that the tools can be operated in concert and as a system.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2004Date of Patent: December 11, 2007Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: Jarle Toekje, Timo Jokela, Ian Raw, Jennifer E. Patent number: 7303020Abstract: An interventionless actuator for oil well tools is described wherein the actuator comprises at least one floating piston adapted to equalize a pressure differential and lock onto an actuating member. An interventionless actuator is described that is charged to an initial energy level less than the expected at-depth well pressure and then recharged down hole to approximately the at-depth well pressure by a floating piston. At the time of desired interventionless actuation, the actuator is overcharged to a pressure greater than the at-depth well pressure, which pressure is reacted by an actuating piston to generate an actuating movement.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2005Date of Patent: December 4, 2007Assignee: BJ Services CompanyInventors: Floyd Romaine Bishop, Richard J. Patent number: 7299866Abstract: An apparatus and method is used in the cleaning out of sand in underbalanced gas wells. The present invention includes a valve subassembly equipped with an emergency shutin device to remotely control the actuation of the valve via an air or hydraulic control line. Operatively coupled to the inlet of the valve subassembly is a swivel subassembly which further enables the coupling to a tubing string. A lifting assembly attaches the valve subassembly to an elevator of a well service rig. A hardened elbow coupled to an outlet of the valve subassembly directs the gas/sand mixture being removed from the well through a hose to a collection pit. The use of the apparatus of the present invention in a sand cleanout operation allows joints of pipe to be tripped into and out of the tubing string all the while keeping the emergency shutdown device actuator connected and operational.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2005Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Inventor: Shawn Arthur Jacklin
