Publication number: 20030111227Abstract: A bi-directional seal assembly can be used in various types of cartridge valves including dirty fluid valves and a variety of other valves. The present seal assembly utilizes a seal spool, two O-rings and opposing seal cups. The O-rings are compressed during manufacture of the seal assembly and the valve more than typically recommended by O-ring manufacturers. Because of this compression, the O-rings serve a dual function. At lower pressures, the O-rings act as a spring causing the seal cups to contact the opposing seal plates and at higher pressures they act as seals between the seal assembly and the valve.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2001Publication date: June 19, 2003Inventor: Thomas W. Publication number: 20030019622Abstract: Downhole wellbore tools are actuated by electrically controllable fluids energized by a magnetic field for example. When energized, the viscosity state of the fluid may be increased by a degree depending on the fluid formulation. Reduction of the controllable fluid viscosity by terminating a magnetic field acting upon the fluid may permit in situ wellbore pressure to displace a tool actuating piston. Displacement of the tool actuating piston is prevented by the controllable fluid in a viscous state. The viscous state of the fluid is energized by a magnetic field environment. When the field is de-energized, the controllable fluid viscosity quickly falls thereby permitting the fluid to flow through an open orifice into a low pressure receiving volume. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, an expandable volume fluid may be used against a slip actuating element in the same manner as a fluid pressure motor.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2001Publication date: January 30, 2003Inventors: James Edward Goodson, Michael Carmody

Publication number: 20020108755Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for actively controlling the flow of hydrocarbon fluids from a producing formation at the downhole sand screen. A preferred embodiment of the invention provides a fluid flow annulus within the production tube inside of the screen. In a first flow control configuration, fluid passing through the screen is required to flow along the annulus to find a flow aperture into an interior flow bore. A static flow control device within the annulus between the sand screen and a first flow aperture dissipates flow energy by forcing the flow through a restricted area that helically winds about the flow annulus. Dissipation of the flow energy increases the pressure reduction from the screen into the production bore and reduces the flow velocity. In a second flow control configuration, flow control structure within the flow annulus obstructs all flow along the annulus. A third flow control configuration removes all flow restrictions within the flow annulus.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 22, 2002Publication date: August 15, 2002Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: Edward J. In one described embodiment, the fluid metering apparatus is connected to a hydraulic input of a well tool actuator. Discharge of the known volume of fluid to the actuator input causes a piston of the actuator to displace a known distance, thereby producing a known increment of actuation of the well tool. The discharge of the known volume of fluid may be repeated to produce a desired total degree of actuation of the well tool.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2001Publication date: February 7, 2002Inventors: Daniel G. Publication number: 20010042626Abstract: An apparatus usable in a subterranean well includes a valve, a first mechanism and a second mechanism. The valve controls communication between an annular region that surrounds the valve and an inner passageway of the valve. The first mechanism causes the valve to transition from a first state to a second state in response to pressure in the annular region. The second mechanism causes the valve to transition between the first state and the second state in response to a pressure differential between the annular region and the inner passageway.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2001Publication date: November 22, 2001Inventor: Dinesh R. Patent number: 6315047Abstract: The invention provides an eccentric subsurface safety valve that may include an eccentric body member having a thick side, a thin side, and a longitudinal bore therethrough. A closure member, such as a curved flapper, is mounted within the body member to control fluid flow through the longitudinal bore, and is moveable between an open and a closed position. The curved flapper may be disposed within a recess in the thick side of the eccentric body member when in its open position. A valve actuator, such as a flow tube, may be disposed within the body member and remotely shiftable to move the curved flapper between its open and closed positions. The flow tube may be shifted downwardly in response to movement of a piston. At least one return spring and/or a contained volume of pressurized gas may be provided to urge the flow tube away from the curved flapper. The piston may be connected to an eccentric plate slidably disposed about the flow tube and between a first and a second shoulder on the flow tube.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1999Date of Patent: November 13, 2001Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: Thomas M. Patent number: 6293342Abstract: This invention relates particularly but not exclusively to the secondary means for closing a bypass valve. A bypass valve (102) is provided which comprises a body (4) having a bore extending therethrough; at least one aperture (32) adapted to allow fluid communication between the bore and a chamber defined in the body (4); and at least one aperture adapted to allow fluid communication between the chamber and the exterior of the bypass valve. Fluid communication between the chamber and the bypass valve exterior is permitted when a piston (78) located in the chamber is in a first position, but is not permitted when the piston (78) is in a second position. Mechanism for selectively exposing the piston (78) to a pressure differential which moves the piston (78) is provided. A bypass valve is hereby provided which is more reliable than conventional bypass valve equipment.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2000Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Assignee: Smith International, Inc.Inventors: Bruce McGarian, Rory McCrae Tulloch
