Abstract: A dual pipe drill string system having increased fluid flow. The dual pipe system comprises a plurality of pipe sections, each pipe section having an inner rod and an outer pipe. The inner rod and the outer pipe of each pipe section may be coupled to the inner rod and outer pipe of an adjacent pipe section. An annulus between the inner rod and the outer pipe defines a fluid flow path through the dual pipe system. The outer pipe defines a shoulder at each end of an individual pipe section. The inner rod defies at least one stop for maintaining the inner rod within the outer pipe. A spacing assembly disposed around the circumference of the inner rod defines paths for fluid flow and maintains a minimum distance between the stop and the shoulder at one end of outer pipe of the pipe section.

Abstract: A debris catching device for downhole milling features modular debris receptacles that are held in the housing in a manner that facilitates stacking and a generally undulating flow path to facilitate dropping of the debris into the receptacles as the remaining fluid travels up the tool for ultimate screening before the fluid exits the tool to flow up to the surface or in a reverse circulation pattern back to the mill below the debris catcher. The modules can also be aligned with flapper valves at the top of each module to prevent debris in the tool from falling to the mill if circulation is turned off. The mill is configured to have an off-center return path preferably as large as the passage through the mill body to aid circulation and cutting performance.

In an example class of embodiments, the innovative safety joint includes a sleeve with a j-slot that fits to a lug attached to the mandrel. A piston is attached to the sleeve. The safety joint is disconnected by first pulling up on the string to shear a set of shear pins, the upward movement also lifting the sleeve and piston. As the piston lifts, a passage through a part of the piston allows fluid to move from an upper chamber to a lower chamber. A valve prevents fluid from moving back up into the upper chamber, so that the lower chamber acts as a stop to prevent the piston and sleeve from lowering again. Downward pressure on the drill string forces a lug against the j-slot, causing the sleeve to rotate until the lug is aligned with a vertical slot of the j-slot.

Abstract: A safety joint that allows disconnection from a downhole section of a drill string without rotating the drill string.

Abstract: The present invention provides drilling assembles and methods that are especially useful for a bottom hole drilling assembly for drilling/reaming/or other operations related to drilling a borehole through an earth formation. In one embodiment, the drilling assembly utilizes standard drill collars which are modified to accept force transfer sections. In another embodiment, the drilling assembly comprises a tension inducing sub which creates a force that may be used to place the bottom hole assembly or portions thereof in tension. In another embodiment, a reaming assembly is held in tension to provide a stiffer reaming assembly.

Abstract: A downhole electric power generator is disclosed in one embodiment of the invention as including an inlet channel formed in a bore of a downhole tool string component for conveying a moving downhole fluid and a turbine coupled to the inlet channel to receive the downhole fluid. The turbine converts the energy of the moving downhole fluid into rotational energy where it is stored using a flywheel. The flywheel may then be coupled to an electrical generator to convert the rotational energy to electrical energy. In certain embodiments, a continuously variable transmission may be inserted between the turbine and the flywheel. The entire generator may, in certain embodiments, be designed small enough to reside in the wall of a downhole tool.

Abstract: A swivelling device is provided for picking up or backing off a drive string after it has been stuck in a down hole. The device allows the drive string to move longitudinally and rotate. The device has a shaft rotatably mounted in a housing so that the shaft can freely rotate but can not move radially or axially relative to the housing. A frame support is moveably connected to the housing and has an aperture that is attachable to a support system capable of lifting up the drive string. A pair of biasing mechanisms bias the housing towards the frame support. When a downward force is applied to the shaft by the drive string, the housing can be displaced downwards away from the support frame. Once the downward force ceases, the biasing mechanism moves the housing back towards the support frame.
