  • Patent number: 10880636
Abstract: Embodiments are directed to an upward-firing speaker that reflects sound off a ceiling to a listening location at a distance from a speaker. The reflected sound provides height cues to reproduce audio objects that have overhead audio components. The speaker comprises a direct-firing tweeter and an upward-firing full-range driver in a unitary enclosure for playback of front-channel and height-channel signals, respectively. A crossover passes high frequencies of a front-channel signal directly to the tweeter and combines low frequencies of the front-channel signal with the height channel signal to be played through the full-range driver. A virtual height filter is applied to the height channel signal to improve the perception of height for audio signals transmitted by the virtual height speaker to provide optimum reproduction of the overhead reflected sound.

  • Patent number: 10123111
Abstract: A passive cardioid acoustical system, or loudspeaker, is described which is driven with a single electrical signal and provides a useful reduction of low-frequency sound intensity in the rearward direction while producing relatively high low-frequency sound intensity in the forward direction. This is accomplished by an acoustical circuit which modifies the magnitude and phase of sound radiated by the interior side of a vibrating diaphragm or diaphragms, and combines it with the sound radiated by the exterior side of the diaphragm or diaphragms, so as to cancel part of the rearward radiation and reinforce the forward radiation. The passive cardioid loudspeaker described employs an improved acoustical circuit which allows improved efficiency, as well as greater flexibility with regard to the size, maximum output, and effective frequency range of the loudspeaker, as compared to prior art.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a housing. The housing may enclose an interior cavity. A speaker may be mounted in an opening in the housing. The interior cavity may serve as a sealed back volume for the speaker during normal operation of the speaker. During normal operation, control circuitry in the interior cavity plays audio content through the speaker. When it is desired to cool the control circuitry and the speaker, the control circuitry supplies a subaudible signal to the speaker. Airflow regulators having one-way valves and valves that are controlled by the control circuitry are mounted in the housing. Movement of a diaphragm in the speaker when the subaudible speaker is applied causes the diaphragm to pump air through the airflow regulators, creating a cooling airflow through the interior cavity.

The directions of sources are front, back, left, right, top, and bottom of the device, and can be determined by amplitude and phase differences of microphone signals with proper microphone positioning. The source separation is to separate the sound coming from different directions from the mix of sources in microphone signals. This can be done with blind source separation (BSS), independent component analysis (ICA), and beamforming (BF) technologies. The device can perform many kinds of audio enhancements for the device. For example, it can perform noise reduction for communications; it can choose a source from a desired direction to perform speech recognition; and it can correct sound perceiving directions in microphones and generate desired sound images like stereo audio output. For instance, if the microphone resides at or near the top of the cylindrical housing, then the speaker may point downwards along the longitudinal axis of the housing and away from the microphone. By pointing the speaker away from the microphone, the microphone will receive less sound from the speaker than if the speaker were pointed toward the microphone). Because the voice-controlled device may perform speech recognition on audio signals generated by the microphone, less sound from the speaker represented in the audio signal may result in more accurate speech recognition, and/or a lesser need to perform acoustic echo cancelation (AEC) on the generated audio signals.

  • Patent number: 8967323
Abstract: The enclosure comprises a seven-sided prism on which loudspeakers or other devices for sound reproduction are mounted at a substantial angle to each other. Using its primary base, speakers are angled obliquely upward. Speakers mounted on the enclosure can share a single audio signal. Multiple signals can be sent to speakers on different sides of the enclosure. It can be used as a double floor monitor, a wide-dispersion main speaker, a simultaneous combination of double floor monitor and audience-facing main speaker, or a combination of wide dispersion main speaker and a single floor monitor. It reduces the number of speaker enclosures necessary for a stage production. It can be manufactured simply and affordably from many materials using standard construction methods. The enclosure may be useful for any other application where it may be advantageous, including but not limited to, audio speakers for computer, television, radio, or music playback.

Abstract: The invention relates to a speaker enclosure and a method for fabricating the same. The speaker enclosure comprises a main housing, a top cover, and a bottom plate. The main housing fabricated by a molding process and having a continuous side wall, end faces, and an inner space, wherein, a plurality of ribs are formed on the inner surface of the continuous side wall, so that the inner surface is an irregular surface. Therefore, the reflected direction of sound waves generated by a speaker unit in the inner space will be changed and the amplitude of sound waves will be decreased by an irregular surface formed in the inner surface of the continuous side wall. As the result, standing waves and echoes mixing with original sound waves may be eliminated.

Abstract: A speaker enclosure includes a seal and a speaker grille with a tuned port. Mounting tabs are molded in the grille. The seal is engaged by a series of ribs which surround the grille mounting tabs and by a rib which surrounds the tuned port tube of the grille. The tabs have shoulders or stops which locate the grille relative to a front plate of the sound box. The sealing ribs around each tab have a height which provides the correct compression of the rubber foam seal material. As the speaker grille is installed using spring clips, the seal is compressed by the ribs to provide the seal required so that the space behind the speaker only vents through the tuned port.

  • Patent number: 8939252
Abstract: A protective material for acoustic transmission is disclosed which optimizes sound transmission of the material while also providing a barrier from ambient conditions to transducers. The protective material of the disclosure is a self-tensioning membrane with properties such that sound attenuation is minimized as the membrane transfers acoustic energy. In one embodiment, the self-tensioning membrane is used to cover an opening in an electronic device enclosure by securing the entire outer edge of the membrane with an adhesive. Such a construction creates an unbound region where the self-tensioning membrane can effectively transmit sound energy by moving in response to incoming sound waves. The self-tensioning membrane allows sound to travel out of the protective enclosure while also preventing liquid or particulate intrusion.
