Patent number: 6029785Abstract: A force balanced brake system for effecting ratio changes in transmission comprising a band brake unit (10) having separate bands (12 and 13) selectively engageable with a reaction drum (5), each with a piston apply lug (16 and 18) and anchor lug (17 and 19). With equal area apply pistons (21 and 41 charged with common pressure, apply and reaction forces are equal and opposite. Side loads are eliminated so the brake drum (5) is only piloted as a rotating component. The system provides freewheeler type shifts without specific one-way devices. The brake band unit (10) provides engine braking during vehicle coast. For freewheeler type shifts, the system is staged in a one-way mode and the torque capacity of the band is regulated to vary in direct relationship with the torque band (10) also reduces to a near zero value allowing the brake drum (5) to turn freely in the direction opposite to previous reactive torque.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1998Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Inventor: Erkki A. Patent number: 5476152Abstract: A steering control system provides a pilot pressure capable of ensuring excellent responsiveness and light operation force and constant shifting strokes of the control lever even in case of wear of the brake and the clutch. The control lever (1) for use in rightward and leftward steering is directly coupled to the pilot pressure control valve (2) and the pilot pressure control valve (2) is coupled to the clutch piston (4) for ON/OFF operation of the clutch (3) and to the brake cylinder (6) for ON/OFF operation of the brake (5) with piping (10,17). When the control lever (1) is shifted to the right or the left, the pilot pressure control valve (2) at the operation side is actuated to set the associated clutch to OFF and then the associated brake to ON.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1993Date of Patent: December 19, 1995Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Komatsu SeisakushoInventors: Yukyu Yamamoto, Masazumi Oikawa

Patent number: 5249655Abstract: Two solenoid-actuated shuttle valves selectively direct hydraulic fluid from a line pressure source to a clutch and brake servo or direct fluid from the clutch and servo to a low pressure drain, in accordance with the combined states of the solenoids. The system includes several orifices, which in combination control the rate of flow between the pressure source and the friction elements. The orifices control also the flow rate in the system between the friction elements and drain ports. Accumulators are located in the system between the shuttle valves and the friction elements. An arrangement of check valves and orifices located between the shuttle valves and the accumulators establish the rate of flow between each of the accumulators and the associated friction element.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1992Date of Patent: October 5, 1993Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventor: Dennis W. Patent number: 4944376Abstract: A brake band drum for a planetary gear-type automatic transmission in which a clutch is formed inside a press-manufactured planetary gear input member coupled to a press-manufactured clutch cylinder and one member of a planetary gear mechanism, and a band brake is arranged on the outer peripheral side of the clutch cylinder or planetary gear input member, characterized in that the clutch cylinder or planetary gear input member is fitted by being splined, and an engaging surface of the band brake is formed on an outer peripheral surface of the clutch cylinder or planetary gear input member. Thus, the brake band drum is formed by fitting the brake band drum and clutch cylinder together. This makes it possible to dispense with electron beam welding. As a result, costs and weight can be reduced.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1988Date of Patent: July 31, 1990Assignee: Aisin-Warner Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Kazuhisa Ozaki, Masakatsu Miura

Patent number: 4447044Abstract: A control system for one or more hydraulically driven crane winch drums each having a hydraulically actuated clutch and a brake. Included is a negative braking mechanism having a brake cylinder of the single-acting, spring-return type for normally holding the brake applied by the force of the spring and releasing the brake on fluid pressure actuation. A mode selector valve selectively delivers hydraulic fluid under pressure from two separate sources to the clutch and the brake cylinder in order to condition the winch for a selected one of winching, brake-locking, and free-fall modes. The mode selector valve causes the negative braking mechanism to release the brake in the free-fall mode, so that a positive braking mechanism is also provided to permit the operator to arrest the free fall of the load, or the free running-out of the cable, in an exact position desired.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1981Date of Patent: May 8, 1984Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Komatsu SeisakushoInventor: Minoru Nakata

Patent number: 4360092Abstract: In first gear, a brake band prevents one gear of the planetary gearing of an automatic transmission from rotating. In second gear, a clutch causes this gear to rotate as a unit with the drive and driven shaft of the transmission. For an upshift under load, the clutch is engaged slowly, thereby decreasing the required brake torque. The brake force is therefore decreased at a corresponding rate. A switch having a movable contact is mounted so that the contact is moved in response to the reactive force created between the brake band and the gear box. This reactive force varies as a function of the brake force and also depends upon the direction of movement of the braked member. The switch is set to a threshold value which is substantially less than the brake force applied in first gear.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1980Date of Patent: November 23, 1982Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventors: Alfred Muller, Joseph Sauer

Patent number: 4337926Abstract: A log skidder winch control system (10) includes a manually actuated master cylinder (22) connected to the winch drum brake release cylinder (18) to allow the winch cable (44) to be winched out gradually independent of the vehicle hydraulic system. The master cylinder is connected in the hydraulic line between the winch control valve (34) and the drum brake release cylinder, and normally serves only as a conduit for oil flow to the brake release cylinder when the control valve is put in a "free spool" condition. With the control valve is neutral the master cylinder can be manually actuated to pressurize the brake release cylinder to provide gradual release of the winch drum brake (26).Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1980Date of Patent: July 6, 1982Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventor: Peter H. Patent number: 4261451Abstract: A hoist drum control includes a drum clutch control pressure graduating valve (15) connected between a pressure air source (14) and a shuttle valve (21), the latter being connected in a line to the drum drive clutch cylinder (25). Quick release valves (22, 24) are disposed closely adjacent the clutch cylinder and the shuttle valve for releasing pressure in the clutch cylinder line. An adjustable drag regulator (16) and air supply poppet valve (17) is connected between the air source and the shuttle valve (21) and is actuatable to supply low pressure to the drum drive clutch cylinder (25) for dragging. A momentary return of the drum from dragging to full speed is accomplished by momentarily shifting the said pressure graduating valve (15) to an out-of-neutral mode to supply high pressure to the drum drive clutch cylinder (25). A normally open relay valve (20) is disposed in the line between the regulator (16) and poppet valve (17) and one side of the shuttle valve (21).Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1979Date of Patent: April 14, 1981Assignee: Northwest Engineering CompanyInventor: Richard I.
