  • Patent number: 5533425
Abstract: The present invention is an electrically actuated disc stack for drives, brakes and combinations thereof having minimized residual magnetism. Residual magnetism is minimized by the following features being provided, singly or in combination, in a drive, brake or combination thereof. 1) A non-magnetic material is located between the clutch armature plate and the clutch electromagnetic coil assembly, and a non-magnetic material is located between the brake armature plate and the brake electromagnetic coil assembly. The non-magnetic material serves as a spacer to add reluctance to the magnetic circuit and may be for example a wafer for instance composed of aluminum or stainless steel or may be a coating. 2) A driver circuit for energizing the primary and secondary electromagnetic coils, wherein the self-induced EMF produced when current is shut-off is rapidly dissipated. 3) Non-magnetic drive components are used in the path of the magnetic circuit of the clutch and brake electromagnetic coil assemblies.

An oil shear clutch assembly is operable to lock the input shaft to the output shaft and an oil shear brake assembly is operable to lock the output shaft to the housing of the drive system. The clutch assembly is normally engaged and the brake assembly is normally applied due to the force being exerted by a first and second plurality of coil springs. Power supplied to a first AC coil will disengage the clutch and power supplied to a second AC coil will release the brake. The drive system will therefore act as a braking system when power is terminated to the drive system.

  • Patent number: 5327795
Abstract: A ball screw apparatus having a revolving position detector for detecting revolutions of a ball screw nut and a ball spline nut and a number-of-revolutions altering means for issuing a command to decrement or increment the number of revolutions of the ball screw nut so that a difference between sets of revolution numbers becomes zero. In the ball screw apparatus, a driving motor is disposed in parallel with a driving shaft. An output of the driving motor is transmitted via a belt to each nut. When driving the motor in a clutch-off/brake-on state, only the ball screw nut is driven to revolve, and the driving shaft is slid in the axial direction. When driving the motor in a clutch-on/brake-off state, the two nuts revolve together, and the driving shaft is rotationally driven. A reduction ratio on the side of the ball screw nut is set equal to that on the side of the ball spline nut, whereby the two nuts synchronously revolve.

  • Patent number: 5172798
Abstract: An electrical actuation system for a drive utilizing one or more disc stacks having annular discs alternately connected with two or more drive components. A disc stack is directly selectively clamped by an armature of an armature assembly being magnetically attracted to an electromagnetic coil of an electromagnetic coil assembly upon energization of an excitation current in the electromagnetic coil. The armature has a zero air gap with respect to the electromagnetic coil when the disc stack is clamped. A plurality of armature springs are carried with the armature assembly and are compressed when the armature assembly biases against the disc stack, thereby accommodating wear of the discs. Clamping of the disc stack results in the two drive components connected therewith being interconnected. Upon the excitation current being switched off, the disc stack is no longer clamped and the two drive components are now unconnected.

Abstract: In a clutch-and-brake unit for use with a continuously rotating, motor-driven shaft, for example in an industrial sewing machine, a single disk has a clutch surface on one side and a brake surface on the other side. The disk is magnetically urged into operative engagement with clutch and brake pressure plates facing the respective clutch and brake surfaces of the disk, the clutch pressure plate being rotated by the motor-driven shaft to rotate the disk and a shaft connected thereto when operatively engaged, and the brake pressure plate being non-rotatable to brake the shaft. The brake pressure plate is also constantly urged into light contact with the brake surface sufficient to brake the disk and shaft only when the disk is not operatively engaged with the clutch pressure plate. This prevents the disk and connected shaft from rotating when neither the clutch nor the brake are operatively engaged and eliminates engagement noise when the brake pressure plate is operatively engaged.

  • Patent number: 4497395
Abstract: An anti creep braking system for a vehicle. A force transmission member is drivingly coupled to a part of the brake pedal and transmits braking force to a braking force generation system. A braked member is selectively braked by a braking device, and is driven by the brake pedal with a one direction force transmission device being interposed on the path of transmission of force between the brake pedal and the braked member. The sense of force transmission of the one direction force transmission device is such that, when the movement of the braked member with respect to the vehicle is prevented by the braking device, the brake pedal may be further depressed to increase vehicle braking action without transmitting substantial force to the braked member, but may not be moved backwards to reduce vehicle braking action.

  • Patent number: 4440277
Abstract: An implement clutch and brake control for portable, engine-operated movable implement tools is described. The implement tool is controlled by a brake and clutch assembly operably connected between the implement tool and an implement engine. The assembly is normally biased as a brake to hold the implement tool stationary and is electrically operable as a clutch to drive the implement tool from the engine. The implement engine powers a voltage source to generate a voltage sufficient to operate the clutch. A "deadman switch" arrangement is operably connected between the voltage source and the clutch and brake assembly. Operator control of the switch maintains an electrical connection between the voltage source and the clutch and brake assembly. Resulting operation of the clutch operably drives the implement tool from the engine.
