Abstract: A multi-directional coupling includes a housing which incorporates a first bearing surface, a race which incorporates a second bearing surface opposite the first bearing surface, a plurality of roller elements, and an alignment cage. The first bearing surface and the second bearing surface together define a channel therebetween for receiving the roller elements. The first bearing surface includes at least one recessed bearing surface portion which is configured for receiving one of the roller elements therein for coupling the housing with the race as the one roller element moves relative to the housing. The alignment cage is disposed within the channel for controlling the spacing between the roller elements. The multi-directional coupling also includes a mode controller coupled to the alignment cage for controlling the relative movement of the one roller element so as to alter the coupling mode of the coupling.

Abstract: A belt tensioner for automatically tightening a belt of a motor vehicle. The belt tensioner includes a tensioner mechanism including a hub, an inner casing and an outer casing. The outer casing is movably mounted to the inner casing. The hub is freely mounted for rotation to the outer casing and for contacting the belt and selectively tightening and loosening the belt in response to movement of the outer casing relative to the inner casing in first and second directions, respectively. Abstract: A clutch for use in an open faced fishing reel that when engaged operates as a conventional one-way clutch, with the pins or needles rolling with the shaft and allowing for movement in one direction but binding the shaft to an outer fixed surface, prohibiting rotation, when the shaft is urged in the opposite direction, but when is disengaged, is switchable from one-way action to freewheel action i.e. shaft motion allowed in both directions by separating the outer binding surface from the main housing of the clutch, allowing it to move radially and allow the surface required to bind the shaft to move away from contact with the pins and shaft, thereby allowing the shaft to freewheel. The clutch is particularly well suited for use in a fishing reel.

  • Patent number: 6047801
Abstract: An improved ratchet screwdrivers utilizes a curved spring to encircle two engaging gear blocks at the ratchet gear portion of the transmission shaft, and then a rotating coupling is used to shift the position of the slide in order to designate the operating direction of the transmission shaft. It indicates that when a certain side of the engaging gear block needs to be activated for locking purpose, it needs to disengage the engaging gear block from the ratchet gear part so that its engaging function is disabled. As a result, because one side of the coiled spring is compressed by the external force, the other will be further compressed to the engaging gear block that has not shifted due to its retaining force, thus a more powerful driving force is generated.

  • Patent number: 5896969
Abstract: A switchable ratchet freewheel, under load, for multiple-gear hubs on bicycles includes a bolted pawl, a drive, a switch bush, as well as a switch ring. The switch ring, which has a positive-fit connection to the pawl, can either be lifted by a bulge on the switch bush, which acts in concert with an incline on a switch nose, provided that a small or no turning moment is conveyed, or by recesses with end faces and timing edges, which act in concert with a run-up incline on the recesses, whereby the recess enters into a short positive-fit connection with the segment of the switch nose that faces radially inward, provided that higher turning moments are present. In case the pawl is not lifted immediately, by means of the bulge acting in concert with the incline, this results in the positive fit of the recess with the switch nose, which reliably disengages the pawl bond when the run-up incline acts in concert with the timing edge.

  • Patent number: 5782328
Abstract: A transfer case for a vehicle having two output shafts, a gear reduction assembly, a coupling mechanism and an overrunning roller clutch for selectively producing driving of one shaft only or both shafts concurrently. The coupling mechanism selectively couples one output shaft to either (1) an input shaft, (2) the gear reduction assembly, or (3) a neutral position. The overrunning clutch has an inner race, an outer race, and rollers located between the races. Drag shoes are positioned to frictionally slide on a drag surface of a selectively grounded member to retard the rollers. A resilient band urges the drag shoes against the drag surface. When the drag shoes rotate at a sufficient speed they disengage from the drag surface so as to provide no force to retard the rollers. When the ground member is grounded it provides the drag surface for the drag shoes. When the ground member is ungrounded it is free to rotate and the drag shoes do not provide a drag force to bias the rollers.

Abstract: A clutch mechanism designed to include a free-wheeling unit which is disengageable in the driving direction consisting of a clutch hub and a clutch sleeve which cooperate with locking catches, with the clutch sleeve being embraced by a control ring. Control pins are radially guided in the clutch sleeve and, by turning the control ring relative to the clutch sleeve, inclined faces formed on the control ring act on the control pins to actuate the locking catches to permit disengagement of the driving connection.

  • Patent number: 4597467
Abstract: A four-wheel drive mechanism for a front-wheel drive vehicle includes a final drive mechanism driven from the output shaft of the engine, which transmits power through a differential to the front drive wheels, and through a gear set and an overrunning clutch to the rear axleshafts. The gear ratio of the gear set is established so that the outer race of the clutch is driven slower than the speed of the front drive wheels so that the rear axleshafts in normal driving conditions are not driven. If, however, the front wheels slip relative to the road surface, the clutch will transmit power to the rear axleshafts or to one rear axleshaft that turns slower than the rear axleshaft. A roller cage retains the rollers and is biased by a spring into contact with a drag surface that is selectively connected to and disconnected from the casing of the drive mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4531620
Abstract: A ramp/roller freewheeling clutch (FIG. 2) has a driving member with ramps 19 adapted to wedge rollers 21 against the driving surface 28 of a driven member 29 when the driving member 13 is rotated in the driving direction. The rollers are positioned adjacent the ramps by a primary cage 22, which can be rotated with respect to the driving member 13 so as to force the rollers out of engagement with the ramps 19 and into recesses 20. A secondary cage 39 disposed in fixed relation with the driving member 13 has cam surfaces 37 such that rotation of the primary cage to disengage the rollers forces them up the ramps and locks them in place with the recesses 20 of the driving member 13, thereby to avoid contact with the driven member 29 when the clutch is disengaged.

  • Patent number: 4462271
Abstract: A multi-position positive clutch is disclosed for use with a between-front-and-rear axle (center) differential of a multiple drive axle vehicle. One clutch member is biased to an overrun position by a fork slideably biased on a piston shaft from a main piston which, when operated, moves to bias the one clutch member in an engaged position. An annular piston, slideable on the shaft, responds to vehicle fluid brake pressure above a predetermined minimum to disengage the clutch. Clutch teeth have a dovetail shape for camming the clutch plate into engagement whereupon switch means are operated to indicate the locked position as well as opposite rotation in the overrun position.

Abstract: A clutch-Brake device, comprising a drive shaft as a driving member, a ring having an inner periphery provided with a surface tapered in an axial direction and coaxially mounted on the drive shaft as a driven member, a plurality of wedges disposed around the drive shaft, each wedge being pivotally mounted on a fulcrum block installed on the inner periphery of the ring, the fulcrum blocks having a tapered surface slidably engaged with the inner peripheral surface of the ring and capable of causing the wedges to move radially toward and away from the drive shaft when the ring is moved axially in one direction or the other. The wedges are adapted to grip the drive shaft when the drive shaft is rotating in one direction and the wedges are moved to come into contact with the drive shaft, so that the ring is driven to rotate with the drive shaft, and to disengage the drive shaft when the drive shaft rotates in the opposite direction, or when the wedges are moved apart from the drive shaft.
