  • Patent number: 4214317
Abstract: An article of apparel for shielding portions of the body from flying debris such as saw splinters, drill chips, dust, grit, and other particulate matter resulting from overhead work with a hand-held tool, includes a sleeve with an arm-fitting cuff for containing one hand of a user, a porous sleeve-section connecting with the cuff, a transparent sleeve section connected above the porous sleeve section and a loop with a downward angled handle for grasping by the other hand of a user and supporting the upper end of the sleeve against an overhead; pumping action of sawing or the like is prevented by breathing action of the porous sleeve section from blowing debris out of the sleeve, and the transparent sleeve section affords good visibility combined with shielding for the user.

  • Patent number: 4213205
Abstract: A ski mitten is disclosed comprising a cuff of flexible material for encircling the wrist with a thumbless enclosure of flexible hand-protecting material extending forwardly from this cuff and having a rounded configuration of sufficient size to enclose the whole hand when grasping the handle of a ski pole. The mitten enclosure has an aperture in the bottom permitting the shank of the ski pole to extend out of the mitten while the handle is being held. The flexible material surrounding the aperture is sufficiently flexible and stretchable to enable the whole mitten to be retracted in a quick motion over the wrist for exposing the hand whenever the user may wish. Accordingly, the mitten remains conveniently available on the wrist, avoiding a chance of loss, and is ready to be repositioned over the whole hand whenever there are changes in weather conditions or exercise level.

  • Patent number: 4198708
Abstract: The article is a combination of a protective pad, a cover element and two elastic strips. The protective pad is somewhat wider than it is long. The top and bottom edges of the pad are substantially straight, while the central portion of each side edge is cutaway, leaving two protrusions at the opposite ends of each side edge. The cutaway opening in each side edge extends a substantial distance into the pad, and a further keyhole-shaped opening, central of the cutaway opening, extends even further inwardly of the pad. The pad is covered with the stretchable fabric cover element, which follows generally the outline of the pad. The two strips of elastic connect the opposed side edges of the pad-cover combination at each end thereof, with the elastic strips being sufficiently short that they tend to draw the sides of the pad-cover combination toward each other, thereby curving the surface of the combination so that it will conform to the user's limb.

  • Patent number: 4193134
Abstract: For both orthopedic and sports uses, a foamed plastic pad is integrally molded to a fabric. More particularly, a knitted sleeve is constructed having a terry loop on the interior surface of a hydrophobic yarn (e.g. acrylic) and an exterior surface of a hydrophilic yarn (e.g. cotton), whereby moisture is wicked away from the surface in a hydrokinetic fashion. A soft, hydrophilic polyurethane foam pad, which acts as a sponge, absorbs the moisture, is molded integrally with the sleeve, leaving the terry loops free for skin contact. For sports uses, knitted or woven fabrics may be employed, and stiffer, polyurethane foams are preferred.

  • Patent number: 4131952
Abstract: A safety glove for a workman is shown having a fingerless body portion for covering the palm and top of the hand, and attached finger and thumb as well as palm and top hand covering portions that can be easily separated from the main body portion by a pulling motion exerted lengthwise or otherwise along any one of the separable portions, which pulling motion would be produced, for example, when the top end of one or more of these finger portions or top hand sections is caught in a machine or snagged by a drill bit and the workman, with a reflex action, pulls his hand in an opposite direction. The instantaneous separation of the finger, thumb, palm or top hand covering portions from the main glove body portion prevents the entire gloved hand from being pulled into the machine and thus permits the workman to remove his hand from the danger zone.

  • Patent number: 4099269
Abstract: The invention relates to a protective device such as can be used for protecting the limbs of humans, or for example for protecting animals such as for example the fetlocks of horses. The invention provides for a protective device including at least one and preferably a plurality of juxtaposed layers of substantially resilient and shock absorbant material, located within an outer covering. The substantially resilient and shock absorbant material is preferably in the form of sheet material integrally formed with open faced studs or pockets, and closed by a backing material, so that a plurality of air pockets are formed within the sheet material. This substantially resilient and shock absorbant material, when located within an outer covering, cushions blows or forces applied to the area to be protected. In one form of the invention, means are provided on an outer surface of the protective device to enable the device to be located relative to an area to be protected.
