Abstract: A two-compartment container in which the first compartment has an upper layer and a lower layer and contains a first component that is to be added to the second compartment. Above the first compartment is a dome that is bowed upward and is flexible. Attached to the dome is a cutting means. Depressing the dome by pushing downward on it lowers the cutting means so that either the lower layer only or both the upper and lower layer of the first compartment are cut by the cutting means, releasing the first component into the second compartment. The cutting means may be a simple puncturer, or in the case where the second compartment comprises a beverage container or the like, the cutting means may be part of a tubular wall surrounding the opening through which someone can drink the beverage.

  • Patent number: 6098795
Abstract: A device that may be used for adding a selected first component to a second component that is in a main package, which device keeps the first component from the second component until a selected time before use. The device includes a delivery package which is mountable on the outside surface of the main package, and has a delivery opening, a control opening, and a cavity extending between the delivery opening and the control opening. When there is a first component, a compartment that contains this component is mounted inside the cavity so that it seals the delivery opening with a puncturable seal. A puncturer controllable by a user through the control opening is used for cutting through the compartment, including the puncturable seal, and the package to which the delivery package is mounted to release the first component into the main package at the selected time.

  • Patent number: 6092649
Abstract: A cartridge for holding a first and a second fluid including an outer capsule containing the first fluid. An inner capsule is enclosed within the outer capsule and has a portion attached to a portion of an inner surface of the outer capsule. The inner capsule contains the second fluid. A self-sealing preferable section is disposed on the outer capsule and a perforatable section is disposed on the inner capsule and is generally aligned with the self-sealing perforatable section of the outer capsule. The concentration of the second fluid in the inner capsule increases the shelf life of the second fluid, relative to the shelf life of the mixture of the first fluid and the second fluid, while the outer capsule and the first fluid act as a protective layer to cause the second fluid to be mixed with the first fluid to form a non-hazardous mixture in the event of an accidental rupture of the inner capsule, thus increasing the variety of fluids, and their associated shelf lives, that can be stored or transported.

  • Patent number: 6073803
Abstract: A container (1) with two receiving spaces (3, 5) for liquids that are to be mixed only just prior to use has a bottle-shaped lower part (2) with first receiving space (3) and an upper part (4) which can be mounted on lower part (2) and has a second receiving space (5). Second receiving space (5) is connected to receiving space (5) of lower part (2) by an opening, which is initially closed by a diaphragm (20) or a closure plug (35) and is opened only just before the mixed liquids are to be used. To do this, diaphragm (20) is slit by a cutting edge (36) corresponding to closure top (10). If the opening is closed by a stopper-shaped closure (35), closure top (10) has a plunger (40) for pushing closure plug (3) out. Both cutting edge (36) and plunger (40) are connected to the closure top so that they can be activated by a screwing motion of closure top (10).

  • Patent number: 6062381
Abstract: A cleaning kit for use in cleaning surfaces in clean rooms, semiconductor fabrication plants, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, etc. A stack of extremely clean wipers is packaged together with a container of cleaning fluid in a liquid-tight outer container. The kit is stored until just before it is to be used. Fluid is released from the inner container into the wipers. In one embodiment, the inner container is frangible and is broken by application of hand pressure to the outside of the outer container. The cleaning liquid is allowed to soak into the wipers, and the wipers are removed from the outer container for use. The container can be resealed to protect the wipers after the package has been opened. This device and method minimize deterioration of the wiper material due to prolonged contact with the cleaning fluid, and minimize the loss of effectiveness of substances such as biocides which might deteriorate due to prolonged contact with the wiper material.

Abstract: A container for storing two components separately and then mixing them prior to use includes a housing having an opening and a neck portion, a displaceable member, and a closure member. The housing is formed with a first compartment and a second compartment intercommunicating at the neck portion. The displaceable member has a partition wall for sealing the neck portion. The displaceable member is formed such that the partition wall moves from a non-sealing position in which the first and second compartments intercommunicate to a sealing position in which the neck portion is sealed. The displaceable member also may feature at least one conduit for allowing introduction of a component through the opening into the housing. The closure member seals the at least one conduit of the displaceable member and/or the opening of the housing. The displaceable member may be moved by rotating, pushing or pulling and may be moveable by a portion exterior to the housing.

Abstract: Lower and upper covers permanently secured together form a vial enclosing chamber in a cap assembly which encloses the top of a bone cement mixing apparatus mixing chamber having prepackaged premeasured bone cement powder. The vial contains a monomer bone cement liquid and may be glass. The vial has two valve seats in corresponding ports on opposing vial side walls sealed by a releaseably secured preferably glass valve member threaded to a nozzle attached to the cap assembly. The vial ports are aligned with a mixing chamber liquid inlet port to permit the cement liquid to flow into the mixing chamber from the opened valves. The vial may be supplied enclosed in a separate package and includes valves on a valve stem attached to the package for opening and sealing the vial. In the alternative, the vial is frangible glass and may be opened by fracturing it and retaining the fragments in the vial receiving chamber to release the liquid to the mixing chamber.

  • Patent number: 6007264
Abstract: A small sized shallow pouch like container (3) for a dispensible ingredient includes a pair of built-in outwardly pivotable flaps (5 & 7) positioned on opposite sides of the container's outlet end to form a package applicator (1). Squeezing the container's sides with the fingers expresses the stored ingredient through the outlet and onto the applicator flaps. Using the container portion as a finger grip, the flaps may be moved about the desired surface, spreading the dispensed ingredient. In some embodiments the outlet is opened by squeezing the container sides to break a closure seal (19). In others the outlet is unsealed by pulling the flaps apart (19'); by tearing (35) or is unblocked (57) by unfolding the flaps. In a preferred embodiment the container and applicator combination is formed by a pair of flexible foil sheets of substantially identical structure (21 & 23) that are superimposed over one another and partially connected together to define both the container and the applicator.

  • Patent number: 5984141
Abstract: A beverage device is provided for separately storing two beverages and for selectively dispensing the beverages sequentially or in combination. The beverage device includes a cap assembly attached to a conventional drink bottle, the cap assembly having an inner cylindrical housing rotatably nested within an outer cylindrical housing. The housings are generally hollow and present apertures which facilitate the dispensing or mixing of beverages when properly aligned. The inner housing includes a channel which allows a drink to be drawn through a spout from the bottle by a user upon alignment of apertures between the housings. The inner housing further includes a chamber for storing a beverage until apertures in the inner and outer housings are aligned to release the beverage into the bottle for mixing and dispensing. Alignment of appropriate housing apertures is accomplished by rotation of the inner housing within the outer housing.

  • Patent number: 5979647
Abstract: A disposable lid is used with a container has pre-stored additives such as sugar or cream. The base member has at least one compartment region which has a sealed outlet and a cover sealing the compartment region to prevent the additive from exiting the compartment region. When the cover is actuated, the outlet breaks open and allows the additive in the compartment region to flow into the container. The outlet in the base member projects from the base member and preferably has troughs formed in the outlet. The outlet is arranged under the cover, and when the cover is depressed the outlet opens at the troughs to allow the content to exit out of the compartment region. The cover is preferably made of a flexible material to permit the outlet to be depressed by applying pressure on the cover. The compartment region of the base member is formed by raised walls surrounding the compartment region, the cover being affixed to top of the raised wall to create an air tight seal.
