  • Patent number: 7204930
Abstract: An oxidation filtration system for cleaning groundwater, the system having an aeration tower and a filtration tank. Within the filtration tank is an upper chamber and a lower chamber. Contained within the lower chamber is a plurality of Styrofoam™ filter media. Separating the upper chamber from lower chamber is a filter media mash which keeps the filter media from entering into the upper chamber. The aerated water from the aeration tower enters into the base of the lower filter chamber and rises through the filter media into the upper filter chamber. As the water passes through the filter media, the dissolved solvents fallout of the groundwater and attach themselves to the Styrofoam™ media. An automated back flushing and clarifying process is also provided using a back flush port and a clarification port, a higher level water sensor in the aeration tower and a programmable logic controller.

Abstract: A self-cleaning filter system is disclosed that includes an inlet fitting that is adapted to be inserted into an existing filter body. A spray tube having a plurality of outlets that slideably engages the inlet fitting, is positioned in the ring discs of the existing filter and a compression member proximate to one end of the ring discs applies a compressive force to the ring discs. When fluid enters the spray tube from the inlet fitting compression on the ring discs is reduced to allow the ring discs to separate while fluid pressure is simultaneously imposed on the ring discs through a plurality of outlets to clean the filter component. The parts included with the system may be used to convert a manual filter into a self-cleaning filter system.

Abstract: A device (1) for separating and filtering particles and organisms from a high volume flowing liquid operating under low pressure. The device (1) includes a conical or cylindrical shape inlet chamber (3) were liquids enter tangentially creating a circular flow without creating a vortex, the liquids accelerate into a separation and filter chamber (14) where the liquids spin around a longitudinally disposed filter element (11) in the center of the chamber (14), with the centrifugal forces separating out larger and heavier particles towards the perimeter of the separation and filter chamber (14), and where smaller particles having a specific gravity closer to that of the liquid are filtered when the liquid penetrates through the filter element wall into the center of the filter element and flows out one of the longitudinal outlets of the unit. Ultraviolet light irreparably damages bacteria, microorganisms and pathogens contained in processed ballast water and may be incorporated as part of the system.

Abstract: A slurry monitoring system is provided. A filter encompasses a filter chamber containing a purge piston. During a monitor operation, the purge piston is retracted, and slurry enters the filter chamber through the filter, then passes into an outlet pipe, where a characteristic of the slurry is monitored by a monitoring device. During a purge operation, a flush valve is opened to allow water to pass into the filter chamber through an inlet pipe. The purge piston is extended to force filtered slurry from the filter chamber. The water dilutes filtered slurry remaining in the filter chamber. The flush valve is then closed and the purge piston retracted. This forces diluted slurry to pass out of the filter. This purges the filter. Diluted slurry also passes into the outlet pipe, which purges the outlet pipe and monitoring device.

  • Patent number: 6638422
Abstract: A liquid filtering apparatus which incorporates a filter bed medium having a specific gravity lower than that of the process liquid being filtered. Process liquid is pumped through one or more filter chambers containing the filter bed medium. A discharge line at the top of the housing directs the filtered liquid either back into a process liquid tank or stream, or into a clean liquid storage tank. A small storage tank provides a volume of filtered liquid for use in backwashing the filter bed medium. The particle size and nature of the filter bed medium are determined by the identity and specific gravity of the process liquid to be filtered so that the filter bed is buoyant on the process liquid. As the process liquid is pumped into the filter chamber, the composite filter bed floats to the top of the chamber where it stops rising. The process liquid then passes through the filter bed and the particulates are strained from the liquid by surface filtration and depth filtration.

Backwash is periodically initiated according to the time and/or the degree of soiling of the filter element to be cleaned. The aim of the invention is to improve the inventive arrangement in such a way that cleaning is optimal according to the degree of soiling of the filter element to be cleaned respectively. A control device (7) is provided which detects the melt volume and/or the flow rate of the backwashing melt during a backwashing procedure.

Abstract: A wastewater treatment reactor includes an upper chamber 4 biomass therein and a lower chamber including a combination filtering/aerating unit 6 having a gas inlet 9 and a discharge outlet 10 for purified water. In operation, wastewater enters the upper reactor chamber via delivery pipe 12 and is mixed with biomass. During a filtering mode, the wastewater then enters the porous hollow body 7 defining a membrane unit 6 and is filtered thereby. In an aerating mode, gas travels across the membrane in an opposite direction freeing the membrane of biomass lodged therein. A heat exchanger 16 can be provided for exchanging heat energy between the wastewater input and the purified water output. A control device for regulating gas flow, wastewater flow, and pH may also be provided including pressure, pH and oxygen content measurement. A channel 7a may be provided for adding a cleaning medium and also an absorbent reactor 13 for treating waste air.

Contemporaneously, chemicals within the chemical injector 21 are driven along with the backwash flow via capillary 24.

Abstract: A filter backflushing system including an accumulator containing a pressurized bladder which propels a supply of backwash fluid contained within the accumulator in a reverse direction through a filter element. While the backwash fluid is pumped within the accumulator, an inert gas inside the bladder is compressed against the inside walls of the accumulator. Upon reaching a pressure of approximately 300-600 psi, the filtered fluid is released from the accumulator and the full energy of the compressed gas is released as well. This release produces a high pressure rapid burst of backwash fluid which effectively removes clogging contaminants from a filter element.

Abstract: A self-cleaning assembly has an enclosed casing with a movable member/piston and a filter therein, the casing having an inlet and a first outlet for liquid supplied thereto and a second outlet for removing liquid containing contaminant from the casing. The filter assembly is constructed and arranged to provide, in a normal operating mode, a liquid flow path through the filter in a first direction between the inlet and the outlet and, in a cleaning mode, to provide a liquid flow path in a second direction between the inlet and the second outlet. The movable member compresses the filter during the liquid flow in the second direction and contaminant is released therefrom for removal from the filter assembly via the second outlet.

A dual backwash loop which is a pipeline connecting a top port of the said membrane assembly to a cleaning pump through a first branch and a second branch. The first branch is designed to fill a small amount of cleaning liquid into the said membrane assembly; and the second branch is designed to fill a relatively large amount of cleaning liquid in order to clean the membrane adequately. The said system operates in the following procedures: operation status, cleaning status 1, cleaning status 2, drain status, returning to the operation status. The technology of the present invention may be used to enhance the cleaning effect to the membrane system, further save water for the cleaning process, shorten the cleaning time, thus benefiting the continuous large scale industrial production and having higher efficiency.

At that point in time, a cleaning cycle is entered, during which cleaning fluid is passed through the filter for such a period of time as is necessary to allow the permeate flow rate with the cleaning solution to stabilize. At that point in time, the processing of process fluid is recommenced and the process continues on a repetitive basis between the processing of process fluid and the cleaning of the filter.
