Abstract: In an axial-flow cylindrical preparative chromatography column that utilizes a piston to close off the top of the resin space inside the column and thereby eliminate void spaces at the top of the resin, one or more proximity detectors are incorporated in the piston head to either generate a signal indicating the proximity of the piston had to the resin, or to collect a signal, such as a optical signal, emitted from the resin. The value of the signal or any change in the signal is compared to a threshold value to ascertain when the piston head is in proximity to the resin so that the motion of the piston toward the resin can be halted before contact pressure from the piston head damages the resin.

Abstract: An automatic priming method in which an arterial-side chamber is maintained in a normal position during priming, as in a case of dialysis treatment, and in which forward and backward rotations of a blood pump are employed, and a speed of rotation, in particular, backward rotation, is adjusted to be low, so that air or the like is reliably prevented from entering a dialyzer. The priming method for use in a blood purification circuit in which priming is conducted by supplying physiological saline into a circulation circuit formed by connecting an arterial blood circuit with a venous blood circuit includes filling the venous blood circuit with a priming solution (physiological saline), discharging the priming solution for cleaning the arterial blood circuit, conducting a treatment in a direction opposite to the overflow step, which may be followed by a forward direction re-circulation step, and re-circulating in a forward direction.

Abstract: A gradient pump apparatus which is capable of continuously and precisely feeding, to a chromatograph, eluents at intervals of certain time and at a constant flow rate in units of nano-liter per minute while the composition of two or more eluent components is changed. The gradient pump apparatus includes a 10-port valve for switching an eluent mixing pipe, in which a feed pressure of eluents changes with time, to be connected to a first loop which is supplied with another eluent from an isocratic pump that should function to hold an eluent feed pressure constant, and which is connected to an analytic section, or to a second loop through which the eluents are drained. A controller computes a difference between a value of the pressure in the eluent mixing pipe and a value of the eluent feed pressure applied from the isocratic pump when the eluent mixing pipe is connected to the second loop.

Abstract: A fuel management system for using water for on-board vehicular separation of ethanol from ethanol-gasoline blends is described. Water or a water-alcohol mixture from a secondary tank is mixed with the ethanol-gasoline blend resulting in separation of the ethanol. By using on-board vehicular separation, the consumption of the externally supplied liquid from a secondary tank can be decreased to less than 1% of the gasoline consumption. This allows for long refilling periods for the externally supplied fluid. In another embodiment, a water-based fluid is directly injected into the cylinders of a spark ignition engine to eliminate knocking without causing misfire. In a further embodiment, an alcohol-based fluid is also used in those circumstances where injection of the water-based fluid may cause misfire.
