Patent number: 7435340Abstract: This disclosure describes wastewater treatment systems and methods of treating wastewater. In one exemplary method, a wastewater is split into first and second wastewater fractions. The first fraction is delivered to a membrane bioreactor, which may produce an effluent with a low pollutant concentration, and the second fraction is delivered to a biological wastewater treatment system, which may yield a higher pollution concentration yet have a shorter solids retention time. Some implementations of the invention can routinely meet or even exceed pollution discharge standards quite economically during normal operation, yet retain significant flexibility for handling seasonal or sudden variations in the flow rate of wastewater into the system. In select adaptations, waste activated sludge containing heterotrophs, autotrophs, and (optionally) polyphosphate accumulating organisms is delivered from the membrane bioreactor to the biological wastewater treatment system.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2007Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignees: CH2M HILL, Inc., CH2M HILL Canada, Ltd.Inventors: Bruce R. Patent number: 7422680Abstract: Animal waste such as fecal material from swine, chicken, turkey, and cattle is converted into useful forms such as fertilizer, other types of soil builders, and even nutrient feed additives. Devices, systems, and methods are provided that allow economical conversion and in many instances, alleviate the production and release of undesirable gases such as sulfide and ammonia. In one embodiment, undesirable anaerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria are killed at a greater rate than desirable soil compatible aerobic bacteria. The use of low temperature killing diminishes off gassing commonly associated with other techniques, and the use of gas trapping additives such as zeolites provides enhanced soil building qualities such as slow release of nitrogen and slow release of moisture to soil. The methods allow convenient adjustment of composition, allowing conversion of waste into tailored designer fertilizer suited for particular soils.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2005Date of Patent: September 9, 2008Inventor: Richard G. Publication number: 20080099385Abstract: A waste stream from energetics processing is treated using a pre-filter having media, preferably sand, and a metal that has a reducing potential, preferably elemental iron (Fe0). The pre-filter is connected to a zero-valent metal column reactor. The waste stream is pumped through the pre-filter to trap solids and deoxygenate it, then enters the reactor and is subjected to a reducing process. Most of the Fe0 is transformed to the ferrous ion (Fe+2), added to the resultant product, and fed to a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) in which Fenton oxidation occurs. This product is then sent to a sedimentation tank and pH-neutralized using a strong base such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The aqueous portion is drawn off and the sludge pumped from the sedimentation tank. Both tanks are monitored and controlled to optimize required additives, while monitoring of pressure drop across the pre-filter and column reactor establishes replacement requirements.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 14, 2007Publication date: May 1, 2008Inventors: Byung J. Patent number: 7361281Abstract: The disclosed invention is a fixed bed ion exchange water purification system. It employs a combination of electronically controlled process steps and specific systems configurations to duplicate the effects of moving resin beds from one operating position to another as is required in moving bed ion exchange water purification systems. The invention combines features of single fixed bed ion exchange systems with those of a moving bed system. The invention applies to the treatment of water having typical industrial and drinking water concentrations of various ions.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2006Date of Patent: April 22, 2008Assignee: Basin Water, Inc.Inventors: Peter L. Jensen, Gerald A. Guter, Dan Ziol

Patent number: 7347932Abstract: A method for separating a volume of a composite liquid into at least a first component and a second component is performed in a centrifuge cooperating with a separation bag containing the volume of composite liquid. The separation bag is connected to at least a first component bag and a second component bag. The separation bag is spun so as to centrifuge the volume of composite liquid and cause the sedimentation of the at least first and second components. When the at least first and second components have sedimented, the first component is transferred at at least one first transfer flow rate into the first component bag. When the first component has been transferred into the first component bag, the second component is transferred into the intermediate component bag at at least one second transfer flow rate that is different from the at least one first transfer flow rate.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2004Date of Patent: March 25, 2008Assignee: Gambro BCT, Inc.Inventors: Brian M. Publication number: 20080035542Abstract: The present invention provides automated systems for the purification of radioisotopes, the formulation of radiopharmaceuticals or both. In preferred embodiments the radioisotopes are produced by a generator. In further preferred embodiments the automated systems comprise replaceable cassettes for easy replacement of the system's networks of tubing. Also provided are replaceable cassettes and kits for use with the automated systems of the invention. The invention further provides methods of using an automated system to purify radioisotopes, formulate radiopharmaceuticals or to do both in series.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 23, 2007Publication date: February 14, 2008Applicant: Board of Regents, The University of Texas SystemInventors: Firas Mourtada, Ali Azhdarinia, David Yang, Changsok Oh

Patent number: 7320760Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided for testing the efficiency of a cleaning procedure for a filter in a filtering system. After the cleaning procedure of the filter, the filter pores contain a fluid. The system is pressurized, and a decay in pressure over a predetermined time period is measured. Based on the pressure decay, it is determined whether or not the cleaning procedure has been effective; a pressure decay smaller than a predetermined threshold value indicates that the cleaning procedure has not been effective.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 2002Date of Patent: January 22, 2008Assignee: Tetra Laval Holdings & Finance S.A.Inventors: Stefan Hedström, Harald Hermansson, Jeanette Lindau
