  • Patent number: 7850849
Abstract: The invention presented is an apparatus specifically designed for the high rate anaerobic treatment of (waste)waters with relatively high concentrations of lipidic compounds, referred to as the Inverted Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (IASB) reactor. Contrary to conventional anaerobic reactors, it avoids the need of sludge with good settling properties and exploits the problem of sludge flotation due to long chain fatty acid (LCFA) or biogas adsorption onto the sludge and/or biogas encapsulation by the sludge. Furthermore, it provides an increased specific sludge surface area for better LCFA degradation. It is fed from the top and is equipped with a separation step at the bottom. Reactor contents are thoroughly mixed by the novel combined action of a gas lift loop and a liquid recycle over the reactor. The reactor can be operated in continuous and sequential mode. Although it is specifically designed for lipid degradation, its application is not limited to this.

Abstract: A variety of improved hydroclone based fluid filtering systems are described. The hydroclones generally include a tank having an internal chamber and a filter (preferably a surface filter) that is positioned within the internal chamber. The filter defines a filtered fluid chamber within the internal chamber of the tank. The hydroclone may be operated such that a vortex of flowing fluid is formed between the chamber wall and the filter with the filter being located in the center of the vortex. With this arrangement, the filter acts as a cross-flow filter. In one aspect of the invention, the filter is a stepped filter. In another aspect of the invention, the filter is an surface filter, as for example, an electroformed metal surface filter. In some preferred embodiments, the openings in the filter are arranged as slots that extend substantially vertically so that they are oriented substantially perpendicular to the flow path of fluid flowing in the adjacent portion of the vortex.

Abstract: Systems and methods handle air and rinsing fluid during fluid processing. The systems and methods eliminate air from a fluid processing system prior to, during, and after use. The systems and methods provide a connector assembly for establishing fluid flow from a fluid source. The connector assembly has discrete first and second passages that prevent communication between the fluid in first passage and the fluid in the second passage. Prior to system use, the connector assembly may be utilized in a priming function to remove residual air from a fluid circuit prior to use. The connector assembly may also be utilized after use to perform a rinse-back function.

  • Patent number: 7585416
Abstract: The invention disclosed provides an apparatus and method for filtration and disinfection of ship's ballast water, such as sea water, based on hydrodynamic cavitation. The apparatus comprises a vortex diode with a tangential entry port and an axial outlet port with single or multiple bleeding holes. The disinfected water may be re-circulated through the system for additional disinfection or released from the tank into the surrounding waterways. The disinfection of seawater/ship's ballast water is achieved through filtration and hydrodynamic cavitation and the method does not involve use of any chemicals or any chemical reaction. The invented apparatus and method is simple, eco-friendly and can be fitted on to existing intake and discharge systems of any ship with minor modifications. It poses no risk to the health of the ship's crew unlike chemical methods and requires no special skill or additional manpower for its operation.

Abstract: A method and system for removing contaminating iron from an acid pickle bath. The method comprises the steps of removing at least a portion of the acid pickle solution containing an amount of contaminating iron therein from a primary acid pickle bath, raising the pH of the at least the portion of the acidified acid copper solution with a pH adjuster to a level which is conducive to the precipitation of iron, precipitating the contaminating iron from the acidified acid copper solution, and acidifying the acid copper solution back to operating conditions for the system. Once the portion of the acid pickle solution has been treated, it is returned to the primary acid pickle bath.

  • Patent number: 7537693
Abstract: The present invention discloses an Up-flow Multi-stage Anaerobic Reactor (UMAR) used for treatment of medium/high concentration organic wastewater. The stated UMAR with forced internal circulation, improved phase separator and added sludge inlet overcomes the disadvantages of a lower load, a longer hydraulic retention time and a larger dimension in traditional anaerobic reactors. The forced internal circulation increases capacity and cycles of internal circulation thus increased efficiency of contaminant removal. The fast jetting is avoided and efficiency of gas/liquid separation is increased by an improved bending outlet of up flow pipe. The simplified sludge addition and usage are obtained by a sludge inlet. The load of UMAR in this invention can reach about 30 kgCOD/(m3d) for treatment of medium/high concentration of organic wastewater from pulp and paper process and similar wastewater, being about four times of load and capacity of traditional Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) reactors.

  • Publication number: 20090114607
Abstract: A technique using a curved channel of a spiral device to introduce a centrifugal force upon neutrally buoyant particles flowing in a fluid, e.g. water, to facilitate improved separation of such particles from the fluid is provided. As these neutrally buoyant particles flow through the channel, a tubular pinch effect causes the particles to flow in a tubular band. The introduced centrifugal force perturbs the tubular band (e.g. forces the tubular band to flow in a manner offset from a center of the channel), resulting in an asymmetric inertial migration of the band toward the inner wall of the channel. This allows for focusing and compaction of suspended particulates into a narrow band for extraction. The separation principle contemplated herein implements a balance of the centrifugal and fluidic forces to achieve asymmetric inertial equilibrium near the inner sidewall.
