  • Patent number: 6379109
Abstract: Because mechanical aerators are located in a pond of liquid and, therefore, not subject to convenient visual monitoring by operations personnel, it is desirable to have a method for automatically detecting and dislodging debris which become caught on the aerator propeller. The present invention includes a waterproof vibration sensor mounted within sensing range of the rotating shaft of the aerator propeller. The sensor is operably connected to the propeller motor so that when the sensor detects excessive rotating shaft vibrations caused by debris attached to the propeller, the motor is automatically shut down and then run in the reverse direction causing the debris to be thrown off the propeller. Once the debris have been dislocated from the propeller, the motor is restarted in the forward direction. If the sensor continues to detect excessive motor shaft vibration, the motor will once again be shut down and then run in the reverse direction.

Abstract: A membrane filter apparatus includes a treatment tank; a membrane unit disposed within the treatment tank and composed of an array of membrane elements; a tubular (rectangular-tube-like) skirt element disposed at a bottom portion of the membrane unit, an aerator disposed under the skirt element for the purpose of discharging gas; a partition disposed at a bottom portion of the membrane unit and defining, together with the skirt element, a compartment within the skirt element; and a gas supply unit for supplying gas to the compartment. The gas discharged from the aerator becomes bubbles. The bubbles are supplied into and rise within the compartment, thereby increasing their rising force upon entry into gaps between membranes. Since the gas is supplied into the compartment by the gas supply unit, the flow rate of bubbles along the opposite side edge portions of the membrane unit can be increased.

Abstract: A waste water purification process, in particular a continuous waste water purification process is disclosed, as well as a waste water purification plant system, in particular for continuous waste water purification. Waste water is purified in that an aerated mixture of waste water with activated sludge is degassed before being discharged into the secondary settling basin. The waste water purification system has a venting device that connects the aerating container or a separate chamber thereof to the secondary settling basin or a separated chamber thereof. The venting device is designed as a U-shaped tube. One of its branches forms the supply collecting pipe and the second branch forms the discharge collecting pipe, whereas the section that interconnects its two top ends delimits the intermediate chamber that contains a separate gas suction chamber.

  • Patent number: 6103107
Abstract: Ferrofluid coated particles resulting from a ferrofluid materials separation process are washed with a solvent which is the same material as the liquid carrier employed in the ferrofluid. The result is a "dirty" solvent which is a very weak ferrofluid. The dirty solvent is then filtered or centrifuged to remove dust particles and other impurities and then the solvent is recovered by distillation in a distillation unit. The solvent can then be reused in the materials reclamation process. The residue in the distillation unit is surfactant-coated particles of ferrofluid. This residue is mixed with either clean or unprocessed solvent in the right proportion and the slurry is passed through an attritor to convert it to a high grade ferrofluid. The ferrofluid can also be reused in the materials separation process.

  • Patent number: 6103128
Abstract: A mixing device in the form of a centrifugal pump is used to mix gas (typically air) with liquid (typically effluent water, dispersion water, or waste paper pulp suspension, etc.). The pump is provided with a common inlet conduit for both the liquid and the gas so that liquid and gas flow freely and in an arbitrary ratio into the pump, that is there is no controlling or adjusting of the flows. The gas is allowed to either dissolve in the liquid or be mixed as small bubbles with the liquid, and any surplus gas is separated from the mixing device (e.g. by holes in the pump impeller leading to a rear portion of the pump which is attached to a vacuum source, such as a liquid ring pump). The liquid and gas dissolved therein, and small bubbles mixed therein, are discharged from the mixing device at a pressure that is raised from the inlet pressure, due to the action of the impeller, which pressure development enhances the dissolution of gas in the liquid.
