    Abstract: An apparatus for purifying waste water by precipitating out foreign material as solids and separating the solids from the purified water comprising a rotatable semi-cylindrical open container and a band filter beneath the container for receiving the contents of the container and separating the precipitated solids from the purified water. As the container slowly rotates, the contents spill over the edge of the container onto the moving band filter. The purified water is recovered in a filtrate container beneath the filter while the solids are discharged to waste from the end of the band filter. A microprocessor controls the sequence of operations, including the rotation of the container, the stirring mechanism, the feeding of the precipitation agent and the duration of stirring.

In another embodiment, a gas pocket (P') is provided beneath a concave hood (32) which traps gas bubbles (30) introduced into an aeration chamber (110A).

The stock liquid is admixed with air bubbles from an air bubble generating device disposed at a lower portion of the cell and extending between the opposite end plates of the cell, thereby forming the stock liquid into a spiral flow. Ink particles are entrapped by the air bubbles to deink the stock liquid and the air bubbles remain as froth over the free surface of the stock liquid. The froth is made to flow down to the froth trough. The deinked stock liquid is discharged to the exterior of the cell through the stock outlet at the other end of the cell.

    Abstract: A process and apparatus for microbiological degradation of wastes and for the separation and degradation of organic impurities from waste gases. For the degradation of organic wastes, the individual charges are divided into part charges and alternately are aerated discontinuously in separate rotting vessels until the desired degree of degradation has been reached. For the degradation of impurities in waste gases, the waste gas is alternately passed discontinuously into separate filter units which contain biologically active microorganisms. The waste gases are fed to the particular absorbent until the latter is saturated. Feeding of the waste gases to that unit is then interrupted until the microorganisms colonizing the absorbent of the first filter unit has degraded the pollutants. During the pauses, the waste gas is passed through at least one further absorbent, of the same structure but independent of the first, into a second filter unit, and vice versa.

In a third embodiment, the aeration/mixing is obtained by a plurality of downwardly directed air jet nozzles adjacent the bottom of the tank.

The system preferably utilizes multiple tanks stacked one above the other and connected in series. The tanks have an in-built mixer that sweeps through the interior of the tank. A sparger is located either in the inlet or in the bottom clearance of the tank to introduce microscopic bubbles of oxygen and ozone into the sludge. A pressure regulating valve controls the flow of the stabilize sludge from the uppermost reactor tank.

    Abstract: A aeration device designed for use in catfish ponds has a support base on which an electric motor and a gear reduction unit are mounted. A cylindrical hub attached for rotation with an output shaft of the gear reduction unit has four evenly spaced radially extending rods. A hollow cylindrical cup is mounted transversely on the free end of each of the rods. The openings of each cup face in the same rotational direction. Four brace struts extend between the radially extending rods, forming a square. In use, the supporting base is situated in a catfish pond, with the motor and gear reduction unit disposed above the water level. At the extreme downward position, each cup will extend about two feet below the water line. As each cup passes through the water, the cup is filled with water which is then carried around a circular arc and dumped from the cup as the cup moves around the arc back toward the surface of the water. In this manner, the water is splashed and aerated before being returned to the water.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for the removal or reduction of inorganic contaminants, hardness, radionuclides, organic contaminants, odor, turbidity, discoloration, and objectionable taste from water, subjects the water to lime-phosphate softening, aeration, sedimentation, filtration and ion exchange in an automatic cycle especially suited for home and small commercial usage. The raw water, such as well water, is first subjected to a cold lime softening and aeration treatment, then to a phosphate treatment followed by settling and filtering. The thus treated water is supplied to a pressurized tank feeding a conventional ion exchange water softening unit as the water is tapped for use. No heat input is needed but the treated water can be heated as desired for use. An electrical control system regulates the water and chemicals input agitation, aeration, the time of chemical treatment in successive stages and the maintenance of a desired head pressure for the treated water.

The solids content of the slurry leaving the underflow outlet is increased and kept constant by the use of a stirrer having a number of generally vertical rod-like members rotated in the vessel above the underflow outlet. The stirrer enhances dewatering of the slurry and prevents undue build up of thick inactive mud which may block the outlet or cause fluctuations in the solids content of the thickened slurry.

    Abstract: Apparatus for treating waste water by the solids contact aerobic biological treatment process comprises a clarifier and a reaction basin in liquid communication with one another. In one embodiment, the reaction basin has an aerator which also circulates liquid through the clarifier by way of pipes arranged to collect liquid from the surface of the reaction basin and deliver it to a location adjacent a back wall of the clarifier. The clarifier has a bottom wall which slopes towards the reaction basin. Sludge particles in the liquid settle out in the clarifier and liquid discharged from the pipes flushes the settled biological sludge back into the aeration section of the reaction basin. In another embodiment the clarifier and reaction basin together form an oxidation ditch defining a closed loop. An aeration device continuously circulates liquid around the loop and through the clarifier.

    Abstract: A process and an apparatus are specified by which emulsions or suspensions of both different and changing composition can be separated in a particularly reliable manner. In this way, in continuous operation, a counter-flow between gas or gas/liquid suspension and emulsion can be achieved, thereby avoiding recontamination and re-emulsification. A strictly separated turbulence zone and a superposed flotation zone are formed. Foam carrying the flotate is formed on the surface.

    Abstract: An apparatus for use with propeller type aspirating aerators for preventing the formation of vortices near an aerator propeller in a substance in which the propeller is driven. The device comprises a mobile floatable shield which floats on the aerated substance and eliminates a vortex by being drawn into one by the vortex's own swirling motion and contacting the vortex. The shield may be flexibly attached to a frame which also houses the aerator. Because the shield is not connected to the aerator, floats on the surface and is mobile, many of the problems faced with the prior art devices have been eliminated: the shield is easier and cheaper to manufacture; material does not wedge between the aerator and the shield; any problems with the shield are visible; the shield stops virtually all vortices; and vibration problems are eliminated.
