  • Patent number: 8858789
Abstract: A system for cleaning up an oil spill and recovering the spilled oil includes frames supporting superhydrophobic oil-absorbing nanowires. A first container supports the frames with the nanowires. A mixture of oil and water is pumped into the first container where the oil from the mixture is absorbed by the nanowires as water is separated from the mixture and deposited in the first container where it is then pumped therefrom. A second container supports the frames with the oil so-absorbed by the nanowires. The frames with the oil so-absorbed by the nanowires are heated whereby the oil so-absorbed separates from the nanowires and is deposited in the second container. The oil so-deposited in the second container is then pumped therefrom.

  • Publication number: 20140263009
Abstract: A sustainable Low Water Footprint Re-circulating Aquatic System for cultivating aquatic organisms and plants. The system conserves water and energy by using gravity to move water and nutrients from the clarifier into the low water footprint management system. The novel water management system controls the volume of water in the plant grow bed such that it never rises to or above the surface, limiting evaporative water loss. Water flow to the plant grow bed is intermittent and the water management system retains water within the grow bed by capillary action, even when there is no water input. The grow bed contains microflora that convert nitrogenous wastes produced by the aquatic organisms to nitrogenous compounds useable by the plants. The clarified water is then pumped back into the animal tanks. The system is sustainable, cost effective, and highly productive, and uses 50-80% less water than conventional re-circulating aquatic production system.

Abstract: A fuel filter may include a housing having a first annular filter element and a second annular filter element. The filter elements may be arranged coaxially and offset to each other in the axial direction and may be connected in series and therefore configured to allow flow to pass through each in succession. The annular filter elements may be selectively replaceable. Adapter elements may be connected to each other and to at least one of the annular filter elements by a respective plug-in connection. One of the adapter elements may have a continuation configured to close a no-load opening in the housing when the filter element is inserted.

Abstract: Disclosed are modular filter-in-filter elements, namely an outer filter element and an inner filter element which may be assembled to form a filter cartridge for use in separation methods and systems. The outer filter element typically functions as a coalescing element and the inner element typically functions as a particulate filter element. The disclosed filter cartridges may be structured for separating water from a hydrocarbon-based liquid fuel as the fuel moves through the cartridge from outside to inside.

Abstract: A cartridge filter assembly includes a depth filter element and a downstream second filter element. The depth filter element has a mass of melt-blown polymer filaments. The depth filter removes 0.5 to 10 micron sized contaminants at an efficiency of 90% or more. The depth filter preferably comprises multiple zones occupying different depths, with one or more melt-blown polymer filaments traversing two or more of the zones. The second filter element comprises nano-fibers having a diameter of 1 micron or less, and removes a material percentage of contaminants that are less than 1 micron in size, preferably less than 0.5 microns in size. The depth filter element may be in the form of a tube and the second filter element may be in the form of a pleated sheet located inside of the depth filter. The cartridge filter assembly may be used to pre-treat a feed water upstream of an RO membrane. The SDI of the feed water may be reduced to 3 or less or 2 or less.

Abstract: In most cancers, a significant factor in a poor outcome for the individual cancer victim is metastatic disease, i.e., dissemination of tumour cells to other parts of the human body via the circulation, such as distant organs, and their subsequent proliferation therein to form multiple other cancer tumours. The presence of circulating tumour cells, or CTCs, represents a vital intermediate step in this process and variations of a few CTCs within blood samples containing tens of billions of cells may denote the outcome for a patient or impact the cancer treatment regimen. At present no low cost field deployable technique for filtering CTCs exists. According to embodiments of the invention micro-machined filters with high aspect ratio, with and without, functionalization are employed to perform multi-parameter filtering for CTCs based upon compatibility with low cost semiconductor processes within multiple materials including silicon, polymers and silicon carbide.
