  • Patent number: 8491791
Abstract: The present invention contemplates various devices that are configured to separate a sample, which contains more than one unique species, into any desired number of sub-samples by passing the sample across a like number of separation media configured for a first separation protocol. Each of the sub-samples may be further separated by an additional separation protocol, thereby creating a plurality of mini-samples, each of which may be further separated and/or analyzed. The invention also contemplates using a simple method of using conduits to form a fluid path that passes through a plurality of separation media, each of which media is configured to isolate a particular sub-sample. After various sub-samples of the sample are isolated by the various separation media, the conduits may be removed, thereby enabling each of the isolated sub-samples to be further separated and/or analyzed independent of any other sub-sample.

Abstract: The present invention relates to filters used to remove debris from water being sucked into a piping system. It has particular application for use in nuclear power plants, which, after a loss of coolant accident, must pump cooling water back into the reactor core from a collection sump. This water may contain various types of debris that must be removed before the water is sent back into the reactor cooling system. Filtering of the debris is realized with the component known as “strainers”. There are restrictions on the space available for installing strainers. The vaned filtering element, for example a vaned fin, of the present invention is designed to reduce the space required for strainer installation by increasing strainer surface area per unit volume, while maximizing the quantity of debris that can be filtered from the water.

Abstract: A method is provided for filtering a fluid including contaminant and or sediment particles. The method includes the steps of: selecting a particle of a first size to be filtered; selecting a first mesh material having a pore size greater than the first size; and selecting a number of layers of the first mesh material for forming a filtration material having an absolute micron rating. The absolute micron rating has a value equal to or less than the first size. The method also includes the step of arranging the layers of first mesh material in a manner so as to form a stack of first mesh material. The method further includes the step of passing a fluid through the stack of first mesh material.

  • Patent number: 8246832
