  • Patent number: 6881328
Abstract: A method for directly evacuating water that has been separated from the filtered fuel in a fuel filter and has settled in a water collection chamber (4) of the fuel filter to an evacuation area that lies above the water level, by opening a shut-off valve (7), which leads to the exterior of the fuel filter and is connected in a water-conductive manner to the water collection chamber (4). Said evacuation takes place under a pressure that is higher in the water collection chamber (4) in relation to the evacuation area, whereby said pressure differential is created either by the operating pressure within the fuel filter during operation, or by a negative pressure that is applied externally. The method permits the simple evacuation of water form the interior of a fuel filter by a method that is not based on gravity. The inventive method can be implemented in a particularly advantageous manner, using specially configured fuel filters.

The filter main body includes an inner filter and an outer filter, which is arranged at outside of the inner filter. A pore size of the outer filter is greater than a pore size of the inner filter. The inner filter is formed by immersing the core member in a high-density fiber solution and generating an inward flow of the high-density fiber solution through the core member. The outer filter is formed by immersing the core member, around which the inner filter is formed, in a low-density fiber solution and generating an inward flow of the low-density fiber solution through the core member and the inner filter.

  • Patent number: 6843913
Abstract: The fuel filter housing (12) is formed of inlet segment (14) and outlet segment (16) that are telescopically mounted to each other, with a seal (44) positioned between the mounting flanges (38) and (40). Valve (60) is maintained displaced from its valve seat (58) by valve actuator (66), by the valve actuator engaging the perimeter of the filter (34). When the outlet housing segment (16) moves away from inlet housing segment (14), the filter and the valve actuator (66) also move, allowing the valve the close. The amplitude of movement of the valve (60) toward and away from its seat (58) is smaller than the sealed telescopic movement of the housing segments, so that the valve closes before the segments separate, thereby limiting the amount of fuel lost from the fuel filter assembly.
