  • Patent number: 4596508
Abstract: An earth-working machine such as an excavator includes a mobile chassis having a support base on which an internal or external gear is fixedly mounted. A slider ring is mounted on the underside of a turntable with a hydraulic motor mounted thereon and having a drive pinion held in mesh with the internal or external gear. A carriage supporting an excavating mechanism has an internal or external gear fixed to the underside of the carriage and rotatably mounted on an annular holder fixed to the turntable. An intermediate shaft is rotatably journalled in at least one bearing mounted on the turntable and has a pair of pinions fixed thereto and held in mesh with the gears, respectively. Alternatively, an intermediate shaft may have a pinion held in driving mesh with the gear secured to the carriage and driven by another hydraulic motor mounted on the turntable through sprockets and a chain trained therearound.

  • Patent number: 4524875
Abstract: A derrick crane has a jib pivoted by way of a horizontal pivot to the movable member of a bearing device supported by a vertically extending mast and includes devices for raising and lowering a load, luffing the jib and slewing the jib about the mast. The bearing device comprises a single ring of free running balls which are a running fit in part circular registering grooves formed in inner and outer bearing rings. The bearing device is located on the mast in such a position that the line of thrust of the jib passes within the pitch circle diameter of the ring of balls.

  • Patent number: 4513869
Abstract: A pedestal crane mounting system utilizes a spherical thrust bearing, for vertically supporting the crane gantry on the pedestal, and a spherical radial bearing, for eliminating radial loading on the thrust bearing. The upper race of the spherical thrust bearing and the outer race of the spherical radial bearing have common points of origin for the generatrices defining the race guide surfaces. The thrust and radial bearings are carried in a cartridge which mounts in a yoke connectable to a crane gantry by support pins at first and second points of attachment. Disposition of the bearing cartridge in the yoke is such that the centerline of the support pins coincides with the centerline of the spherical radial bearing. The bearing cartridge is fitted onto a vertical shaft fixed in the upper end of the pedestal.

  • Patent number: 4435118
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the horizontal motion of a double articulated crane comprises determining the angle about a common axis between a base member pivotally mounted on a crane post and a head member carrying a load application point on an outer end thereof. The angle can vary from 0.degree. to 360.degree.. A desired movement direction value is then set on a direction selector movable on a direction indicator. The value corresponds to a target position for the load application point. The desired movement direction value is adjusted by small increments to reach the target however. The desired movement direction value is broken up into two components, one aligned with the axis of the head and the other aligned with a perpendicular axis. The values of these two compartments are calculated as a function of the sin or cos of an angle of misalignment between the longitudinal axis and the direction of the selector.

  • Patent number: 4244447
Abstract: The engine of a mobile power crane-excavator is utilized as a source of heat to soften grease so that it may be applied to the open gears on the machine, even at low ambient temperatures. Heated water from the vehicle engine is caused to flow in heat transfer relationship with cold grease through a multi-conductor hose to provide a pre-heat of the grease. The heated water is caused to heat a metallic nozzle through which the pre-heated grease flows, thus creating a final heating of the grease up to the desired temperature. Air supplied through the nozzle causes the grease to be sprayed onto the gear. The remote supply tank for the grease may also be pre-heated with hot water from the vehicle engine.
