Patent number: 6394022Abstract: A tamper-indicating device is described. The device has a transparent or translucent cylindrical body that includes triboluminescent material, and an outer opaque layer that prevents ambient light from entering. A chamber in the body holds an undeveloped piece of photographic film bearing an image. The device is assembled from two body members. One of the body members includes a recess for storing film and an optical assembly that can be adjusted to prevent light from passing through the assembly and exposing the film. To use the device with a hasp, the body members are positioned on opposite sides of a hasp, inserted through the hasp, and attached. The optical assembly is then manipulated to allow any light generated from the triboluminescent materials during a tampering activity that damages the device to reach the film and destroy the image on the film.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2000Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Roger G. The lid includes (a) a peripheral skirt which engages the side periphery to hold the lid in place, (b) a top extending centrally of the peripheral skirt and having a top band extending centrally from adjacent the upper end of the peripheral skirt and a depression which extends downwards from the top band to a position substantially equal to or above the lower edge of the skirt, and (c) a peripheral retention lip which extends upwards and inwards from the top band. The lid assembly also includes an insert having a peripheral border. The insert is sized such that the peripheral border is retained underneath of the peripheral retention lip so that the insert is held on the lid.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1997Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Assignee: Kraft Foods Inc.Inventor: Thomas Tedeschi, Jr.

Patent number: 5904259Abstract: An improved, tamper-evident label and bottle cap to be used with standard five gallon bottles; such bottle cap of the type having a central tube section capable of receiving a dispensing probe which is part of a dispensing system. A micro-thin, plastic label is heat-sealed to the face of the bottle cap, thereby protecting the central tube section from any external contaminants. An edge of the label is left unsealed to provide a means for peeling the label from the bottle cap when the bottle is to be installed. By virtue of the heat-sealing method of attachment, the tamper-evident label cannot be reattached to the face of the bottle cap, or any other surface, once it is removed.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1996Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Inventors: Walter E. Patent number: 5896686Abstract: By employing an award determining prize member incorporating a lens constructed to cooperate with printed indicia which produces a minimum of two separate and distinct visual images, depending upon the angle at which images are viewed, a unique and highly valued prize member is created, as well as prize award members which are incapable of having prize related information observed by the consumer prior to purchasing the item. In the present invention, the visual image representing the prize award information is quickly and easily mounted to the inside surface of a cap and is constructed with at least one image thereof being visible only when viewed at an angle which is substantially perpendicular to the surface of the indicia. In this way, advance determination of winning prize members by consumers prior to opening and removing the cap from the container is eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1996Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Inventor: James P. Patent number: 5896990Abstract: A container assembly is provided for use in monitoring consumption of a liquid from the container assembly. The container assembly includes a body constructed and arranged to hold a liquid. The body has a base portion and an opposing top portion. The top portion permits liquid to be supplied into and to be removed from the body. The base portion has a skirt member. Indicator structure is operatively associated with the skirt member for rotational motion relative to the body into a plurality of different positions. Indicia is disposed on the body to indicate consumptive uses of the container assembly. Complementary engaging structure is on the skirt member and on the indicator structure for mounting the indicator structure with respect to the skirt member in such a manner that rotation of the indicator structure is possible in one direction and rotation of the indicator structure is resisted in the opposite direction.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1998Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Inventor: Ramon Barzana

Patent number: 5890609Abstract: Tamper indicating closure and container assembly which prior opening of the assembly is indicated by exposing projections formed integrally with the closure with such projections remaining concealed in the originally closed position of the assembly. The tamper indicating features are associated with a pouring spout on a gable-top container.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1997Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Rexam Closures, Inc.Inventor: William J. Patent number: 5884788Abstract: A tamper-indicating closure for a container includes a cap with removable panels of a top wall of the cap. Each removable panel is connected to a tab on the inside of the cap. The top wall includes inner and outer cams on an inside surface and the tabs underlie the cams. A liner disc is applied inside the cap for sealing against the container. A plurality of spaced-apart ratchet teeth are arranged in one or two circular patterns on the liner disc and sized and located such that the circular pattern of teeth meshes with the two cams. The tabs have a toothed transverse cross-section which allow the tabs to ride over the ratchet teeth in a screwing-on direction to the cap, but the tabs are engaged by the ratchet teeth in a screwing-off direction of rotation of the cap. Since the liner disc and ratchet teeth are stationary with respect to the container, unscrewing of the cap causes the ratchet teeth to separate the panels from the moving cap.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1997Date of Patent: March 23, 1999Inventor: Sheldon L. Patent number: RE36815Abstract: A liner composition for a potable fluid container closure element which includes an inorganic sulfite such as sodium sulfite and/or a tocopherol compound such as a dl-.alpha.-tocopherol (vitamin E) for preventing off-flavors due to the presence of aldehydes in the fluid. Also, a potable fluid container of a reservoir element for containing a potable fluid, the reservoir element having an opening, a closure element capable of being attached to the opening, and the liner composition associated with the closure element. Also, a method of improving the taste of a potable fluid such as bottled water by use of the container and one of the previously described liner compositions associated therewith. Also, an improved method for processing the composition into closure liners based upon the prevention of the development of off-flavor-causing substances therein.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1999Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: ZapatA Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Fred N.
