Patent number: 4251006Abstract: Lightweight, strong, thermoplastic foamed crates for storage and shipment of tender or fragile materials, especially produce such as fruit and vegetables, are prepared from (a) an extruded base and side panel structural foamed thermoplastics and (b) end plates and a divider or dividers which are injection molded foamed thermoplastic materials. This combination of materials reduces the number of molds and molding operations required to provide a large number of containers, since only end pieces and dividers need be molded and carried in inventory. The containers may also have perforated end plates to provide for ventilation or cooling as well as a ridged base or flooring to provide drainage and containment for juices of decaying produce. In addition to providing superior insulating qualities regarding loss of heat or refrigeration, the all-foam crate construction provides improved vibration dampening characteristics which in turn prevent bruising or breakage of tender or fragile items during transportation.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 1980Date of Patent: February 17, 1981Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventor: Vernon J. Patent number: 4071162Abstract: A crate for beverage bottles and the like has separators for the bottles in the form of clusters of pillars extending upward from the lattice work bottom of the crate, each cluster being centered on the intersection of four bottle cells of the crate. The pillars of the same cluster are separated by one or two vertical slot-like gaps extending to the crate bottom to receive the partitions of a disposable bottle pack, so that the bottles can be loaded in the crate after they have already been placed in the disposable bottle packs in which they will go to consumer. The bottom of the bottle pack is provided with holes to allow the bottle separator pillars of the crate to extend up into the bottle pack. Instead of a single bottle pack fitting into the crate, two or more smaller bottle packs may fit adjacently into the crate, with their adjoining walls fitting into the same slot-like gaps of the pillar cluster.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1975Date of Patent: January 31, 1978Assignee: Schoeller International GmbH & Co. Patent number: 4067474Abstract: A plastic bottle case for holding two rows of bottles has two inner walls which extend between opposite ends of the case and slope upwardly and inwardly at an acute angle to one another. Lower edges of the inner walls are spaced inwardly from the respective sides of the case a distance less than the diameter of bottles to be received in the case. Openings having horizontal projections conforming to the cross sectional shape of the bottles are provided in the inner walls to receive the bottles so as to hold them erect and keep them from bumping one another. The bottles are supported by ledges at the bottoms of the openings in the inner walls, the bottom of the case being otherwise open. This construction permits a saving in weight and hence in the amount of plastic material required for the bottle case. A further saving of material is achieved by making the sides and ends of the case of vertically spaced horizontal bands extending between angular columns at the corners of the case.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1977Date of Patent: January 10, 1978Assignee: Spumalit-AnstaltInventor: Ulrich Prodel

Patent number: 4036391Abstract: A plastic bottle case comprises four side walls, a bottom and a plurality of partitions extending between only two opposite side walls, the partitions having spaced V-shaped laterally projecting portions and a projection extending parallel to the opposite side walls from the apex of each of the V-shaped portions. The partitions and the projections are spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the diameter of bottles to be received in the case. The V-shaped projecting portions and the projections together extend a distance greater than the radius of the bottles but not to the next partition. A bottle carrier adapted to be received in the case has a bottom and opposite side walls, one of the side walls and the bottom being provided with cutouts to receive the V-shaped laterally projecting portions and the projections from the apices of such portions when the bottle carrier with bottles therein is placed between two partitions of the case.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1976Date of Patent: July 19, 1977Assignee: Spumalit-AnstaltInventor: Ulrich Prodel
