  • Patent number: 10555560
Abstract: An electrically operated aerosol-generating system may be configured to detect adverse conditions (e.g., a dry heater). The system may comprise an electric heater comprising at least one heating element for heating an aerosol-forming substrate, a power supply, and electric circuitry connected to the electric heater and to the power supply and comprising a memory. The electric circuitry may be configured to measure an initial electrical resistance (R1) of the electric heater; measure a subsequent electrical resistance of the electric heater after the measurement of the initial electrical resistance; determine the difference (?R) between the initial electrical resistance and the subsequent electrical resistance; determine that an adverse condition is present if the difference is greater than a maximum threshold value (?Rmax) or less than a minimum threshold value (?Rmin) stored in the memory; and control a power to the electric heater and/or provide an indication if the adverse condition is present.

  • Patent number: 10413950
Abstract: As sections of a rolled product (1) pass through a cooling path (2), they are initially cooled in a first cooling phase by front cooling devices (6). The sections are then not cooled in a subsequent second cooling phase. They are finally cooled again in a subsequent third cooling phase, by rear cooling devices (8) of the cooling path (2). A control device (10) of the cooling path receives in each case an initial energy value (EA) exhibited by the sections before they pass through the cooling path (2). The control device furthermore receives a target energy (E1*) and a target enthalpy (E2*). The control device (10) determines a first target cooling medium profile (K1*) on the basis of the initial energy value (EA) and the target energy (E1*). The control device controls the front cooling devices (6) in accordance with the first target cooling medium profile (K1*) while the respective section is passing through the front cooling devices (6).

Abstract: PWM-based dimming techniques are provided for lighting systems. The techniques can be used to eliminate or otherwise reduce the potential for strobing and flickering, and may be implemented, for example, in a driver suitable for powering LED lighting systems, but can be used with other suitable light sources as well. In an example embodiment, the potential for line frequency induced flicker, or even line disturbances that are periodic with the line frequency, can be eliminated or reduced by synchronizing the PWM frequency to the line frequency or so-called mains frequency, and the potential for strobing can be eliminated or reduced by either using a randomized phase angle on a cycle-to-cycle basis or by using multiple PWM LED drive circuits all having constant cycle-to-cycle phase angle but a different phase angle from drive circuit to drive circuit (or different from LED string to LED string, as the case may be).
