Patent number: 5774627Abstract: An extended life electrical heating element for a water heater includes a coiled heating resistance wire having a uniform power output per coil turn. Where the heating resistance wire passes through the sheath at critical areas, e.g. return bends, the number of coil turns per unit length of element is reduced to reduce thermal power output per unit length of the element. The number of coil turns per unit length of element in bend areas may be reduced by simply stretching the coiled heating wire to attain the desired length of resistance wire per unit length of the element. Resistance wires of differing heat output per unit length may be combined with different degrees of stretching to achieve the desired element temperatures. In a case 1, an internal space 13 has an opening 14 at one side portion, and the whole of the periphery of the case is closed except the opening 14. A pair of electrode plates 21 and 22 have projections 211 and 221 on faces 212 and 222, and are housed in the internal space 13 of the case 1 in such a manner that their other faces 223 are opposed to heat radiating faces 11 and 12. The PTC thermistors are disposed between the electrode plates 21 and 22 in such a manner that projections 211 and 221 are contacted with the electrodes 32 and 33, respectively. Thermal conductive fillers 41 and 42 made of a resin are charged between the electrodes 32 and 33 of the PTC thermistors 3 and the electrode plates 21 and 22 so as to fill the gaps which are formed by the projections 211 and 221.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1994Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: TDK CorporationInventors: Minoru Takahashi, Makoto Ono

Patent number: 5586214Abstract: Polymeric heating elements and water heaters containing these elements are provided by this invention which utilize polymeric materials in contact with electric resistance heating materials and in contact with fluid to be heated. These polymeric materials also provide a substantially self-supporting structure for the resistance heating material. The heating elements include an electrically conductive resistance material capable of heating fluid when energized. The winding is insulated and protected by a polymer layer integrally disposed over the resistance material. The elements are lightweight, inexpensive to produce and use, and minimize galvanic corrosion and lime depositing without sacrificing heating capacity.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1994Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignees: Energy Convertors, Inc., Rheem Manufacturing Co.Inventor: Charles M. Patent number: 5568587Abstract: An electronic immersion heater includes a tube closed at one end that contains in succession from its bottom to its open end: a heating element, an electronic circuit board with the corresponding support and with a temperature sensor, and a hermetic plug. The electronic heater is characterized in that the sensor is pushed into direct or indirect contact with the tube by means of a single helical spring, which furthermore simultaneously acts as a spacer and as an electrical contact, without conventional rheophores, between the temperature sensor and the electronic circuit board.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1995Date of Patent: October 22, 1996Assignee: Askoll S.p.A.Inventor: Elio Marioni

Patent number: 5552581Abstract: A defrost heater for a cooling appliance, such as a refrigerator or freezer, which has multiple sets of evaporator coils includes a formed glass tube enclosing an electrical resistance wire. The glass tube is substantially bell-shaped, the opposite ends of which are mounted below one set of evaporator coils. The heater includes upwardly curving portions extending upwardly in the clearance between two of the sets of evaporator coils and a downwardly facing portion connecting the upwardly extending portions of the tube which lies adjacent to the lower edge of an upper set of evaporator coils.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1994Date of Patent: September 3, 1996Assignee: Wirekraft Industries Inc.Inventors: William C. Patent number: 5547277Abstract: A preheating screw for the simultaneous mixing and heating of fine-grained or paste-like substances, in which intensive heat transfer takes place during transport of the substance by use of a rotating hollow screw that is filled with a heat-transfer medium, preferably a fluid, heat being transfered from the heat-transfer medium to the product by way of the heated hollow screw. An electrical heating device is installed in a hollow screw shaft, and is supplied with electrical energy via sliding contacts positioned on the outside of the screw shaft.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1995Date of Patent: August 20, 1996Assignee: Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AGInventors: Heinz Caspelherr, Ulrich Huwel

Patent number: 5543603Abstract: A multi-apertured ceramic disk heat conductor support for use in a heating element for electrically heating industrial furnace installations. The ceramic disk has a center aperture extending between exterior surfaces on an axis of symmetry for receiving a supporting element. Further apertures extend are provided for receiving heat conductors. The further apertures are equidistantly disposed around at least one circle which is coaxial with the center aperture. The further apertures have a respective axial portion, and a respective widening portion at least at one end thereof which increases in diameter from the axial portion toward a respective exterior surface of the ceramic disk. A rounded transition region between the axial portion and the widening portion is provided and the length of the axial portion is less than one-half the thickness of the ceramic disk.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1994Date of Patent: August 6, 1996Assignee: Kanthal GmbHInventors: Harald Schmadig, Hubert Klock

Patent number: 5528722Abstract: A housing (10) for use with an electrical heater (H) mounted on the sidewall (S) of a container (C) for heating a fluid (L) in the container. A heating element (R) is installed in a fitting (F), and the housing facilitates connection of electrical conductors (E) to the heater regardless of its location. A base (12) has an opening in which the fitting is received. The base is positioned against the sidewall when the heater is installed. A cover (36) is sized to fit over the base and attaches thereto. The base has an opening (22) therein through which the electrical conductor is routed for connection to an outer end of the heating element. A ring (26) is used to attach the heater to the base. The baseplate captures the one end of the fitting so the base is freely rotatable with respect thereto. Rotation of the base positions the cover so the conduit opening is readily accessible to an installer thereby to facilitate connection of the conduit to the heating element regardless of the heater location.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1994Date of Patent: June 18, 1996Assignee: Emerson Electric Co.Inventors: Lorin T.
