Abstract: Welding shielding gas is often wasted because the welding operator sets flow rates excessively high. The flow rate limiting apparatus described can be added externally to a needle valve flow control adjustment knob in a flow control device. It is connected such that it limits the degree of allowable movement of the flow control knob. It can be locked with a key type tool to prevent changes. Even when the maximum flow is set and locked, the flow can still be lowered by the operator from the maximum allowable flow setting. This ability allows the operator to adjust flow for differing needs and may further decrease gas usage. Eliminating the ability to set excessively high flow rates also prevents the creation of turbulent flow exiting the shielding gas nozzle or cup thereby eliminating air entrainment into the shielding gas stream improving weld quality.

Abstract: The invention pertains to a method for arc welding with a consumable electrode and with high deposition rates, wherein an alternating current is applied between the electrode and a work piece in order to generate the arc, wherein the alternating current has a current waveform that repeats itself after one period, and wherein the current waveform has at least one positive phase that is divided into at least one positive high-current phase and into at least one positive basic current phase and at least one negative phase within one period. According to the invention, the positive basic current phase is applied within the period after the positive high-current phase and a diffuse arc burns in the negative phase. In this case, it needs to be observed that the positive basic current phase is sufficiently long.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for MIG welding is disclosed. When in an ac mode the output is unbalanced, or the balance may be controlled. The balance may be controlled to provide a desired deposition rate and/or to obtain a desired dilution. The frequency may be any frequency, for example 30 Hz, 60 Hz, 90 Hz, or more. The weld path may have groove with angle of less than 50 degrees. A consumable, cored, wire may be used, and provide at rates of 30 or 35 pounds per hour using a single arc. In various embodiments the balance may have a negative portion of at least 1.5 times the positive portion. Abstract: A self-adjusting trailing shield for maintaining a volume of inert gas over a portion of a metal workpiece being subjected to a metal processing operation. The shield has segmented side walls, each segment being independently vertically displaceable as the shield is carried in a horizontal plane across a contoured surface of a workpiece. Each segment will be forced upward when it contacts and slides up a rising surface portion of the workpiece. Each segment is coupled to a respective spring that restores each deflected segment to its original, i.e., fully extended, position as the segment slides down a falling surface. The result is a continual reconfiguration of the segmented side walls that reduces the amount of inert gas escaping from the cover space during travel of the shield, as compared to a shield having rigid, not segmented, side walls.

Abstract: A gas-shielded arc welding method uses a shielding gas and a solid wire for pulsation welding. The solid wire contains S, Si, Mn, C and P in predetermined S, Si, Mn, C and P contents, and other elements including Fe and unavoidable elements. A pulsating current used for pulsation welding has a peak current Ip of 350 A or above and a pulse peak duration Tp between 0.5 and 2.0 ms. The shielding gas is a mixed gas containing 75 to 98% by volume Ar and others including at least either of CO2 and O2. The gas-shielded arc welding method can suppress the generation of spatters regardless of welding speed even if the welding speed is high, and can form a wide, flat bead having uniform toes. A weld metal produced by the gas-shielded arc welding method is resistant to cracking and excellent in preventing the formation of blowholes.
