  • Patent number: 9637179
Abstract: An aluminum alloy vehicle structural component defining an out-of-plane aperture with its main portion. A recessed portion is inset from the main portion having a bed sub-portion out-of-plane with the main portion that defines the aperture. The recessed portion also provides a strain hardened sub-portion, or stiffened ring of material, around the aperture. When the main portion is subjected to in-plane tension due to bending, the strain primarily concentrates along the strain hardened sub-portion (the stiffened ring) and by-passes the aperture. As a result the perimeter of the aperture undergoes less straining than if the aperture was in-plane with the main portion. The out-of-plane aperture, the bed sub-portion surrounding the aperture, and the strain hardened sub-portion surrounding the bed sub-portion may improve the overall structural robustness of the aluminum alloy structural component when subjected to in-plane tension.

Once the lid of the container is closed, the pump, which is formed into part of the container, can be operated to transfer the air from the interior of the container into the bladder-like air chambers which are fluidly interconnected. This reduces the pressure in the container to a sub-atmospheric level and raises the pressure in the air chambers to a level in excess of atmospheric. The internal sub-atmospheric pressure of course holds the lid closed which can be additionally sealed with a suitable adhesive tape/gasket materials.

  • Patent number: 5816429
Abstract: An upper panel has a shearing line including a shear-start portion, linear portions extending from opposite ends of the shear-start portion in an equal length, and an arced portion connecting leading edges of the linear portion. The upper panel also has foldable lines and ribs on the upper panel, each of the foldable lines being located at a position inner to and in parallel to each of the linear portions, and each of the ribs extending in parallel with each of the foldable lines. A pull tab has a fixing portion fixed to a portion of the upper panel inner to the shear-start portion. The pull tab has a pressing portion extending out the shearing line so as to press a portion of the upper panel located outside of the shear-start portion when a raising portion of the pull tab is raised. When the pull tab is raised for opening operation, each of the linear portions of a part detached from the upper panel has a sheared edge curled toward the inside of a container, providing safety.

  • Patent number: 5671860
Abstract: Full-aperture easy-open metal can-end for a can of the lift-up type with a tab, having an endless score-line close to its outer circumference of the can-end, wherein the removable part is profiled with a plurality of terraces at different heights, including an outer terrace close to the outer circumference of the can-end, an innermost terrace and at least one intermediate terrace. Adjacent terraces merge into one another with a height transition. To achieve low tear-force and/or other advantages, the intermediate terrace is inclined in a direction opposite to that of the outwardly adjoining transition at an angle .alpha. in the range 3 to 20 degrees to a plane perpendicular to the can axis.

  • Patent number: 5555992
Abstract: A container end member has a peripheral wall and integral central end wall portion with a stay-on-tab mounted on the central end wall portion for pivotal and rotational movement and a score line groove defined by two spaced apart terminal ends formed in the central end wall portion for defining a severable panel portion that is large enough so that when severed will provide an elongated opening that vents the container to permit pouring of the beverage in the container at faster pour rates than now available.

  • Patent number: 5232114
Abstract: An improved full-open type of convenience closure includes an end panel having a peripheral score defined therein to define fixed and removable end panel portions, a tab having a nose portion for exerting a downward force on the end panel adjacent the peripheral score, a rivet formation for securing the tab to the end panel, and a moustache score for, among other purposes, providing a pivot point for the tab. The rivet formation includes a raised area on the end panel which is defined by an outer edge. The moustache score is curved away from the peripheral score at the point where it intersects the outer edge, thereby preventing tearing along the outer edge during opening.

  • Patent number: 5217134
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for forming a convenience-feature, sheet metal end closure structure (133) for a container body (153) having a non-cylindrical side wall. A new scoring tool (94) configuration enables a peripheral scoreline (102) defining a separable convenience-feature panel (112) to be located contiguous to the closure chuck wall (100) which interfits about its entire periphery with the open end of the side wall of such a container. Separation of such panel leaves substantially no obstruction to removal of solid-pack container. The separable panel (112) is formed with a multiple-layer fold (127) of sheet metal which is nested against the interior periphery of such panel, so as to shield torn residual metal remaining with the panel after severance along such peripheral scoreline.

  • Patent number: 5169017
Abstract: The can end closure member includes a removable central panel for opening the can, and a stepped panel portion allowing the can to be opened by means of a conventional can opener. The stepped panel portion has an angled configuration which recesses the scoreline of the central panel and protects the scoreline from shocks during shipping and handling. The stepped panel portion also includes a ledge portion which serves as a seat for stacking another can on the stepped panel portion without bearing upon the scoreline or the central panel.

  • Patent number: 5038956
Abstract: A convenience-feature full-open end closure structure (27) with a shock-absorbing bead (45) located between a peripheral scoreline (34) which defines the end wall disc (31) to be removed from a recessed end wall panel (49). An arch-shaped back scoreline means with central vent portion (36) and legs (37, 38) is located within the removable disc (31) and co-acts with a longitudinally rigid (non-lanced) opener (30) which is made integral by a rivet (32) formed from sheet metal of disc (31). A multi-layer sheet metal fold (40) shields the raw edge of ruptured residual peripheral scoreline metal which remains with disc (31); and a multi-layer sheet metal fold (42) shields residual raw-edge metal remaining with container (94). The back scoreline central portion (36) is contiguous to and radially inward of rivet (32) and the pair of legs (37, 38) extend with a radially-directed component on opposite sides of the rivet toward the adjacent portion of the peripheral chime seam (92).

  • Patent number: 5007554
Abstract: A non-removable fulcrum-type lift tab, for opening a metal beverage container, is modified, by the inclusion of a lanced line at a position between the fulcrum pivoting line and the pushing end of the tab. The lanced line extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the fulcrum-directed pushing force used to open the container, whereby, upon initial lifting of the tab, the lanced line opens, in a limited material separation. This results in substantially less lifting force (about 30% less), being needed to elevate the tab end about 1/4 inch (about 6 mm) for a finger to be more easily inserted for completion of the opening of the container. At this stage, the ends of the lanced line, such as in the configuration of drilled holes or inwardly arcuate lanced sections, stop continued material separation by providing a high resistance to such separation.

  • Patent number: 4994009
Abstract: An improved easy open can end having a retained tear strip extending diametrically partly across the can end defined by a score line, and a graspable pull tab adjacent and outside the open end of the score line. The pull tab is attached to the can end by means of a rivet, the can end around the base of the rivet being deformed so as to slightly tilt the rivet toward the finger end of the pull tab. Accordingly, initial lifting of the pull tab is fully directed to the initial fracture of the score line immediately in front of the rivet, thereby ensuring desirable venting action of internal pressure and allowing opening of the can end with less effort.
